Tanner as AD...

He might be given one more year after this one considering the state of the program he inherited. However if we don't show progress at all, I think he will be fired.

It was a defining moment in his tenure, and CWM was the result. The opinions on that have been discussed ad nauseum and we know how most people feel about the hire after a 50-day search, with a nice head start. Will has to work out, he'll likely be here as long as Tanner is, barring a total meltdown(s) on the sidelines, or the field. All signs point to him working out ok, but 11+ wins, who honestly sees that? Tanner was sweating this inevitable hire from day one, and that's likely why he persuaded SOS to stay when he should've been gone a season earlier. A seasoned, proactive AD would've been licking his chops when he knew SOS was considering leaving (if he didn't boot him first) because despite our downward trend, this is the best job in the conference in my biased opinion. Excellent recruiting options in every literal direction, facilities are the best they've ever been (and improving), the money is coming in like crazy, and Gamecock Club memberships (were) at least at the highest level ever. And, while SOS used to say LSU and UGA were the top SEC jobs, we don't expect 10+ wins (we should) every year. UGA fired a guy for that, hopefully it keeps blowing up in their face. Anyway, coaches should've been lined up from here to Tennessee for the job, and they probably were. The search was bungled, we all know it, CWM was the easy hire, who else was actually going to hire him as a HC? He's here for awhile,he has to work out, nothing else to say.

Baseball was another "easy hire", and it's not entirely Tanner's fault, and ironically it's much like his hiring as AD, a large majority of the fan base supported the "obvious" hire(s). Think for even a second if football had even won 1 MNC in 2013, and then we hired a HC that had us out of a bowl in a few years. CWS every year is not totally expected, but winning and hosting a Regional is, and winning the Super is not a stretch either for us. Coaches know you can win it all here, its been done. All the CCH supporters know that the program is trending downward, and has been since Maryland, yeah, we get top recruits, yeah, injuries suck, win anyway. We expect the best from the Yardcox, we definitely should, we are a Top 3 program and job, and that is not my biased opinion.

I will say regardless of what coaches CRT did or didn't hire that are kicking tail in other sports (Staley, Shelley Smith, etc...) the department as a whole seems to give excellent support to all programs, and several of our facilities are at the top, or improving. The T&F project is just one in work as we speak, and it's going to be awesome!

Go Cocks!

You're not following baseball too closely if you truly believe it is trending downwards. Wow...that's just a joke.

Before last season it was. We got blanked in the super regional at home this past season. Our rotation has Crowe back next season so we should have high expectations.

Wrong conference to get your feet wet as an AD. You have to be strong and make big boy decisions right away instead of learning how things work. People don't walk into being a CEO of a major corporation after being the best division manager; why on earth would we turn over reigns of what is in essence that same position. Typical

You can't just get rid of last season to serve your point. Last season happened, and it was a very good season with a lot of youth on the team. I agree with the high expectations for this year. I feel pretty sure that Holbrook and company have the same high expectations for the coming season as we do.

Ultimately, the Muschamp hiring will be the defining decision for Tanner. Sure, we demand success in all sports, but if we start winning 10 - 11 games in football again, Gamecock Nation will be happy overall. If football stinks, then you pretty much have to run the table with success in the other sports. If Muschamp takes us where we want to go, the decision to hire him will be viewed as a genius move. Tanner will be the SEC AD who recognized that a stellar coach deserved a 2nd chance after bad luck or a bad fit at Florida. On the other hand, if we end up firing Muschamp after 4 years, Tanner will be the buffoon who hired Florida's reject and somehow expected him to do better here.

As for Martin, we saw definite improvement last year, but one season doesn't establish the trend. This will be year 5 and I think, barring extraordinary circumstances, making the NCAA tournament is a must. He probably got robbed last year at 25-8, but nonetheless, I don't think he can afford a step back this season. It's Big Dance or bust (if I were AD).

Holbrook probably bought himself another 2 years last year, barring a complete meltdown this year. Making the Supers was a definite move in the right direction, but he needs to follow that up with another successful season in order to establish the upward trend. I wouldn't define "successful" based on any particular goal: We've won the SEC East before and failed to advance to the Supers and we've won the national championship without winning our own division in the SEC. But whether it's another super-regional, an SEC East title, an SEC tournament title, or something else, next year's baseball team needs to continue the upward trend of the baseball program. A step back next year would be a very bad sign, making 2018 a do-or-die situation for Holbrook (if I were AD).

I'm not getting rid of last season but we also didn't make Omaha. Getting swept at home in a SR was not a good end to the season.

Two things:
1) While Omaha should be the goal every year, expecting us to actually make it every year is NOT realistic. Each year there are probably 20-30 teams fully capable of making it to Omaha, only 8 do.
2) Losing two straight at home in a super regional is never a good end to a season. However, when the team that swept you goes on and makes it to the bracket finals, obviously they were a pretty darn good team that beat you.

1) I never said I expect to make it to Omaha every year.
2) Chad has never made it to Omaha since he took over for a team that made it to three straight CWS finals. He's going into his fifth season as head coach. How much more time does he need to get back to Omaha? Otherwise we're lowering our expectations as a program. Not making the NCAA tournament in '15 was unacceptable. We've also become a weak home team in the playoffs which used to never be the case.

Missing the playoffs in 15 was akin to the basketball team not making the dance last season. In both cases, a poor selection job by the committee considering some of the teams that did make it.
That being said, I'll just agree to disagree, not going to argue anymore with a fellow Gamecock with a different opinion. I'll just say, the Gamecocks weren't the only one to think of Holbrook as a head coach. He turned down Tennessee, and was in the running for other jobs. Plus, I'm more of the type to say, our AD did his job, now give him some time to do it. Instead of a doom and gloom right off the bat. I guess that is why they say opinions are like buttholes.

The program he inherited? TANNER? A top 10 FB program, building women's basketball program, men's basketball that just landed the best coaching hire since frank McG, and a baseball team that had been to THREE CONSECUTIVE NATIONAL FINALS!!?? THAT IS WHAT HE INHERITED!! He has since sat by and watched as the baseball team completely fell apart, hit rock bottom and has to climb back out now (hopefully), let the football team go to complete shit under SOS- he and the board thought it was a good idea to BEG him not to retire after '14, which worked and boy was THAT a royal screw up!- then he cocked up the coaching search and hired a reject from a conference rival who has proven he is not head coach material and cannot field a tea. How knows how to play offense... now we are 2-4 after a 3-9 season with the WORST OFFENSE IN COLLEGE FB. That is what he inherited- one of the most successful overall athletic programs in the nation- and what he has done with it= crapped all over it! Now, I was a huge Ray Tanner fan, but this has been an epic fail so far! WBB is all that is performing well and those seeds were planted before he got the damn job. That ain't good enough. He needs to figure this thing out and turn it around FAST, or if he really wants to help Carolina he should put himself back in the dugout and let them hire a proven AD who can show us how to win again.
His one identifiable act- hiring Muschamp- has not gone so well... all the other facilities improvements were already talked about or completely mapped out before he took over! Where you gonna go from here Ray? Hoping for a magic trick!,

Not true...even spurrier said it's not true. I don't know why this keeps being repeated.

I don't how anyone could look back and not see it. I know Spurrier tends to go off script, So maybe he didn't meet with Tanner. But what he said to the media, coupled with the state of the program, recruiting, etc,... it seems awfully obvious Spurrier was beginning to check out. In the end, it's still Tanner's job to know the state of the program. He's the overseer. Legend be damn, sometimes you ask tough questions, "Is you heart still in coaching, are you giving 150%??". It's just too fricken hard to change the momentum once the free fall begins ( see Notre Dame, Texas ). I'm a Tanner fan, more for his coaching, but he needs to start righting some ships to earn his keep.

Master plan is nice but Spurrier pushed facilities more than Hyman when he arrived. Hyman was a good business man but that only goes so far in achieving winning programs. Tanner also did this job at N.C State and understands all of the factors that affect a college coaching job.

Tanner was never AD at NC State

Spurrier said his wife did not want him to leave the job, and that's why he stayed. It's as simple as that.

Jerri apparently had no idea he was even resigning in 2015, but didn't want him to according to what I read in his book. I love her to death, but it shouldn't have been hers, or his, or anyone's but CRT and the Board, who should've pulled the trigger. It may have been difficult, but we are set back for awhile because of this. No one is bigger than the program, and we have a habit of deifying those that don't deserve it.

Like tanner for example.....…

No, no, no, no, no, no, no!!

Our baseball program is elite. Our basketball program has been crap since Nixon was in the White House. NO comparison at all. For our baseball team not to make the postseason, it is a colossal failure. For basketball not to make the dance, it's like death & taxes.

Wait,,,,,,.... are you saying our programed hinged on Spurrier's wife's input??? Was this in defense of Tanner, because I think it makes things seem even worse.

I agree. This should be the "defining year".

The person who did not want Spurrier to leave was Pastides.

No he wasn't. He has never been a business man. Before he got into Admin he was a coach.

I respectfully disagree. Basketball is improving at a good rate. I believe Martin is on the right track. Baseball had a strong year last year. I hope we're not saying that anything less than a CWS win is a failure.
I still think it is too early to deem football (the program) as a failure. Yes, this year has been a disappointment, but we have lots of young talent on the team that will contribute in the years to come. If we can close this recruiting season strong, I believe we have lots to look forward to in 2018. I imagine Georgia fans are feeling worse than we are at this point with Richt's early success at Miami and their loss to Vandy yesterday.

We should have figured out a way to have gotten that great catcher into Carolina instead of letting him go to NCSU. My gosh, he would have been a huge key to next year's team. I still can't believe we didn't get him in and NCSU did. Just don't understand that one.

Lifer---it wouldn't matter if, all in one year, our football, men's basketball, women's basketball, and baseball, ALL won national titles, you would still think Tanner is NOT a good AD. Just admit it!
Baseball program fell apart and hit rock bottom? Really? We had a winning record, we did miss the playoffs, though, we should have been invited, when you look at teams that were. NO, we are not the first "elite" program to miss the playoffs "one" year. We had a year or two of getting "not as good" talent and it showed. Now we are coming off a super regional appearance, losing to a team that made the bracket finals at the CWS, and this season looks VERY bright.
Football, everything was ok until Spurrier's 2-3 years comment, something Tanner has no control over. As far as Muschamp, calling him a reject, is just plain and simply a joke. He has 4 years as a HC, one he won 11. The year he had a losing record he lost over half his starters to injuries. If you were really expecting any more than what we have done this season, you were very unrealistic. Look at most of our stats, headed up by freshmen and sophs. Recruiting has been very good, especially considering the last couple of years.
Our overall athletic program is in great shape. Olympic sports competing VERY well. We always lead the conference in GPA, which, by the way, is the reason these athletes are here.
It's time to get off Tanner's back. Some on here don't know how to do anything but throw our program under the bus.

Olympic sports are competing well. Yippee. Like I said earlier, basketball team needs to make big dance, baseball team needs to make Omaha and football team needs to get competitive in SEC East again and become bowl eligible (preferably 8+ wins). If this doesn't happen in a couple years, we're accepting mediocrity from our AD.

I've always found it sad that those that say they are Gamecock fans, don't care about ALL sports. Sure, your main focus is on the big 3, but you SHOULD be happy at the success ALL our sports have. Our AD is responsible for ALL sports, major and olympic.
Also, again, love you guys who really think ANY Gamecock fan ACCEPTS mediocrity. I never have, and never will. If what you've listed above doesn't happen, I'm sure Tanner will make a move. He's obviously got a lot more sense than some on here. Willing to bet that all that you listed will happen in the next couple of years. In fact, won't be surprised at all if basketball and baseball don't happen this year.

I hope you're right but I'll believe it when I see it regarding any changes. Hopefully they wont be necessary. My comment regarding Olympic sports was not to imply that I don't support those Gamecock sports. Rather I meant that Tanner's future as AD will be dependent on the success of big revenue sports- mainly football followed by basketball. For baseball it's a pride and expectations factor considering we were a national power under our AD.

His handling of many issues were embarrassing. See no band to NIT. See extension for Odom and Horn. Mrs. Hyman dealing with Stephen Garcia. Geeez!
No AD has a perfect record when it comes to coaches. No band to NIT? You're pissed about that? WGAS? Hyman was lied to. He came into a broke department. He inherited a program that had never so much as devised a plan either for success or for facilities development. He took that mess and turned it into a success. He left behind something that was far better than he found it. By any definition, that is success.

All coaches push for things they want. SOS was no different, but Hyman delivered for everyone.

And Garcia was and still is an asshole. I don't know how true that story is, but my knee jerk reaction is to be very skeptical of anything involving that moron.

The Garcia/Hyman story is not true, but it still circulates just like the Holtz brought Spurrier here story and others.

You have just lost ALL Credibility - not that you had much to start with. I suppose The Colonial Center and Founders Park just got built by accident, along with the various improvements to Williams-Brice before Hyman showed up.

Look who is talking! McGee built CC. Hyman is as responsible for FP as anyone. FP was built because of fear RT would leave for another beisbol gig. RT helped but Hyman was the main force. If you're going to criticize me, at least get your chit straight.

Actually Dr. Palms gets the credit for getting Founder's Park built.

It is straight. Check your facts. Founders Park was planned long before it was built and certainly long before Hyman arrived. It took an inordinate amount of time to construct primarily because they hit solid rock when excavating began and it took a long time to for the development of the property.
