Tied with Coastal in football recruiting

I've got this bad feeling that Chadwell is going to kill it when he moves to a big boy job. I hope I'm wrong on that one. Regardless we will all be comparing the head coaching careers of Beamer, Napier, and Chadwell over the next decade. Time never lies, we'll see who was right.
Now do not forget that great Texas hire "Herman" which more than a few on here wanted as our next coach.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!GO COCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's no connection between the 2.

Geography is the only reason some fans are so enamored with Chadwell.
Geography is a big deal, that's how Briles and Malzahn were pulled out of the high school ranks. Do you realize how bad it will look if we passed on the next big coaching star right in our backyard? That's a real possibility here, we'll see.

I think Herman is going do well in his next job. The real UT is a hard gig man. Yeah, they have advantages but for those folks that think the politics are bad in little ole Cola, try a taste of Austin. Politics run amok in Austin.

Every situation is different, failing in Austin doesn't automatically mean you can't coach anywhere. Herman would have done much better here than the retread Muschump. No doubt in my mind.

Don't see why it matters where's he's from. Coastal was hyped this year. Everyone knew about Chadwell. There were 17 job openings. He was not considered for any of them.

The comparisons are a false equivalence. Nutt hired Malzahn out of high school coaching to be his OC, presumably b/c a large contingent of Malzahn's players came in a package deal.

I can certainly understand the rationale from some that, given our current status, Chadwell was the best we could do.

How silly would we look if we rolled the dice on him only b/c he was close by and he ended up not working out? The same fans would be b*tching to the high heavens that we weren't thorough enough and didn't even take the search outside of our state.

It's all a guessing game. Will Beamer be successful? Nobody knows. Will Chadwell eventually be a successful P5 head coach? Nobody knows.

All we know is that nobody outside of Conway wanted Chadwell as HC this year.

How silly are we going to look when Beamer fails? We hired a WR coach over a guy who just coached a team to an 11-1 record and top 15 ranking.

If your top 15 coach fails, at least you made the best decision with the data presented to you.

Don't get why folks are enamored with Coastal. If they played in the SEC or ACC, they'd be a 5-loss team, minimum.

Like or dislike Chadwell, the growth of CCU should be a concern for USC. That athletic program has grown tremendously in the last 20 years. 10 years ago you never heard anyone speak of CCU, but now they have a baseball NC, and will enter 2021 getting NY6 Bowl talk again. They have also built a beautiful baseball facility and expanded the football stadium.
As that part of the state grows they will gain new fans. The youth in SC are already becoming fans

Any new hire has an element of risk, football or on Wall Street, every industry. However, I'd rather have a guy that's been the CEO before, even if it was at a much smaller company. Learning on the job in the big boy chair is a tall ask, not impossible but a tall task.

Beamer is the greater risk IMO. But I'm pulling for him, we've been given no other choice by the geniuses in power at USC.

You can't say no one outside of Conway wanted Chadwell this year, he may have told his agent not to pursue openings that were very attainable for him. Unless you know him personally, we can't know that. I'm assuming he lives near Pawley's/Litchfield, no way I'm leaving that beautiful area for just any job. But that's just me.

Coastal would have beaten the hell out of us had we played them last year. I thank Covid for that.
Idk if that was a blessing or a curse. Perhaps we would have giving him a harder look had he put a beatdown on us.

Frankly, as bad as we were last year, I’m not so sure we wouldn’t have beat Coastal.

they took #8 BYU on a 2 day notice and won, Coastal would’ve beat Carolina. If it were the first game or two, MAYBE Carolina would’ve won. From the midpoint of the season onward, Coastal would’ve won by 2-3 TDs.

as for Chadwell not being wanted by other programs, you’re comparing us to Tennessee, Texas, and who else? Those programs are above us. Tenn’s recent hiring history has been as idiotic as ours, but they’ve got a Natty and a history of SEC championships, they’re above us. Texas is well above us. My understanding is that Chadwell was not interested in jobs like Vandy, Kansas, etc. I think he understands full well that his next stop is a major program. He WAS interested in Carolina though.

I HOPE Beamer succeeds, but I have major doubts. The fact he was hired on the same weekend that Chadwell beat #8 BYU showed me that we never seriously considered anybody else. And to me, that sadly points to what a joke this athletic program has become.

The bigger point here is USC is never going to out-recruit (on a consistent basis) UGA, UF, Bama, etc. We need coaches that scheme up mismatches and neutralize overall talent deficiencies. SOS was great at doing that. Do we really think Beamer is capable of doing that?

I'm not saying Chadwell is a perfect fit but the body of evidence shows he is at least an out of the box thinker. Maybe Beamer can become that, otherwise he will need to continually attract/retain exceptional coordinators. No easy task.

...and we beat #4 UGA in 2019...IN Athens. That would be one of our 4 wins on the season.

My biggest concern with Chadwell was that Coastal is the biggest place he's been as a coach. Otherwise, he's been at CSU, N. Greenville and Delta State. I don't care what anyone says, coaching in the P5 is just a different ball of wax altogether, even at a bad P5 school. I'm far more comfortable with someone like Beamer who's been part of P5 programs for a long time.

I'm not saying Beamer will work out. At this point there's no way to know. But I'd at least like a guy who's been in/around P5 programs and has seen how things are done.

If Chadwell had a bit longer track record of success at Coastal, I might have more intrigued by him, but I was not ready for us to snap up a Sunbelt coach on the weight of one good season.

not even close to the same thing. USC and UGA, for all their differences in quality, both still have teams of SEC talent. Coastal has G5 talent vs BYU who’s QB was drafted drafted what, 5th or 6th? No offense, but some of the arguments you’ve tried to make in this thread are ridiculous. Aside from Vandy, SEC teams can beat SEC teams on any given Saturday. And UGA is one of our main rivals to boot. That is nowhere close to the level of a mid level G5 program, 4 years into being a D1A program, beating #8 in the country.

I'd argue the opposite. The talent gap between us and UGA was enormous.

BYU was grossly overrated. Their "signature" win from last year was over Boise State who sported wins over the mighty Utah State, Air Force, Colorado State, Hawaii and Wyoming. Otherwise, who did BYU beat? The likes of Troy, La Tech, Texas State, WKU, North Alabama, SDSU...not exactly a murderer's row schedule.

Precisely. That shows how poorly run that one P5 athletic department is when hiring a coach.
I know you may not like Coach Beamer, but your thoughts on him should at least wait until we play. From what I've heard from the talking heads in many big sports broadcasters is that Beamer and staff are very good to excellent. So far, I've seen nothing to change my mind. Chadwell was the 1st coach interviewed here, and he didn't get the job.

Which talking heads?

Athlon ranked him the 14th best coaching hire behind the Kansas, Utah State and South Alabama hires.

USA Today had him 11th. CBS Sports had him 14th.

I haven’t seen anyone calling it a great hire besides our insiders.

Well yeah, Chadwell wasn’t Stephen Garcia’s bruh. Because you know, Stephen Garcia had such a proven track record of making good decisions that it was obvious he should have the final say in the hiring process. After all, nobody’s gonna hire a coach with actual college HC experience over their bruh.

What in the world has Steven Garcia got to do with who we hire? That was during Spurrier's tenure.

I hope you know Athlon Sports has never given us anything good. I know what I'm talking about, I'm just not going back to look at all the Insider threads with links. This side is full of sickos, trolls and who knows what. I don't even know how I got over here. BTW: I am an Insider and I'm immediately going back over there.

not sure how closely you followed the hiring process, but Garcia had A LOT to do with the hiring of Beamer.
I know a lot of players that were here during Beamer's stint as an assistant here, did like him and may have made some suggestions. Now, if you could elaborate on Garcia's role having A LOT. to do with the hiring.

most likely yes, since Tennessee is his dream job. Yet he WOULD have come here if we’d got to him first. That’s a move I feel like we’ll end up regretting, time will tell.

UT had their chance to get him but chose someone else…..They were looking for a coach pretty much the same time we were. Why don’t everyone go over there and start blasting them for not hiring this guy. Evidently they didn’t think they wanted him either. But hey SEC schools are chomping at the bit to hire this guy. Eyeroll

Thanks for proving my point. The only people saying it’s a good hire are those who are reliant on Beamer for sources and can’t afford to risk losing those connections.

Tennessee has 6 National Championships and 16 SEC championships. They’re higher up the pecking order than us, plain and simple, as much as you may not want to admit it. So given their recent history of bad hires, they weren’t in the same position to take a chance on a “risky” hire as we were, though IMO Heuppel was about as risky Chadwell. I’d be willing to bet money that Chadwell WILL end up at Tennessee before all is said and done. But no, comparing us to Tennessee is ridiculous

I just hope we can score points this year but I’m betting we don’t average over 21 points a game.

JamesRob, I will not agree nor disagree. Everyone has their own opinion and I respect yours. My opinion is Herman is a lot like Sparky Woods, will coach great at smaller conferences but can not handle the pressure at the Power 5 level. He may develop into a high-level coach but I do not see this happening. To be completely honest, I could care less about him. As far as this goes, any coach without the name Shane Beamer I could care less about but it is entertaining speaking/writing about them in the off season.

Damn, nobody goin to answer the question?
Your question can have many answers. My guess is that none of them will suit you. Success to USC and Coastal Carolina are different. Coastal plays a much lighter schedule than USC, so their win/loss total will always look good in comparison to ours. Coastal had a great season in 2020, they are well coached, and I’m happy for them. I pull for every instate program except for the taters. Currently, we recruit many players that Coastal has offered. I see the appeal to their program; they’re popular, winning, and have proximity to the ocean, to boot. Winning is the cure all.

I love the way people make shit up to fit their narrative. No one was debating the history of us and UT. People were basically making a case that we lost out and another SEC school was going to get this jewel. Like say ohhhhh….UT.
He is so great, they didn’t even sniff at Chadwell. I have two sons who graduated from UT and an in-law coaching there currently.

Let me know how much you want to bet Chadwell is never the head coach at UT.

Dude just go jump on their bandwagon already. Enjoy that god awful teal football field.
