Volleyball Travels to Ole Miss for Key Road Series
10/28/2021 | Women's Volleyball

OXFORD, MISS. - As the program enters the final eight games of the regular season, South Carolina volleyball faces an important test on the road when it faces Ole Miss on Friday and Saturday. Both matches against the Rebels will have 7 p.m. ET first serves and both can be watched on the SEC Network+. The Gamecocks (12-8, 4-6 SEC) trail Ole Miss (15-5, 4-5 SEC) by a half game in the conference standings and both teams are currently sitting in the top 50 of the RPI rankings.

SCOUTING THE REBELS

Ole Miss is enjoying a breakout season in year two with head coach Kayla Banwarth, going into the weekend series with Carolina with a 15-5 overall record and 4-5 mark in SEC play. The 15 wins are already the most for a Rebel team since 2017, and its thanks in large part to a solid all-around defense. Starting at the net, the team ranks fifth in the SEC with 2.54 blocks per set with Sasha Ratliff's 1.12 putting her in the top 10 among conference individuals. On the back line, the team's three leaders for digs are all newcomers, led by Maryland transfer Sam Burgio's 2.99, Oklahoma transfer Kylee McLaughlin (2.38) and Florida transfer Riley Fischer (1.99).

McLaughlin's impact is felt most on the offensive side, though, as the setter ranks fifth in the SEC with 9.97 assists per set and has helped an offense comprised almost exclusively of returners improve their hitting percentage from .197 in 2020-21 to .255 so far this fall. Leading the attack is junior Anna Bair, who ranks eighth in the SEC with 3.58 kills per set while also hitting an efficient .299 clip despite taking over a quarter of the team's total attacks. Also powering the offense is the middle trio of Ratliff, Aubrey Sultemeier and Payton Brgoch, who have 324 kills as a group and are hitting a combined .363.
