WBB: Five Things to Watch - #13 LSU

Tip is at 8pm EST on SEC Network+.

South Carolina will dress 12 players. Laeticia Amihere, Kamilla Cardoso, and Olivia Thompson are out. That leaves the Gamecocks without their top two reserves and very thin in the front line. Look for Elysa Wesolek to get a couple minutes near timeouts to give Aliyah Boston extra rest, similar to last season. LeLe Grissett (who swung the game last season when she played power forward) and Brea Beal could also see time as small-ball fours.

Gamecock starters: Henny, Cooke, Beal, Saxton, Boston. LSU starters: Pointer, Cherry, Morris, Newby, Aifuwa.

Gamecocks are in garnet. That's unusual. LSU has a white out.

Gamecocks control the opening tip.

If you can't find the SEC Network+, don't worry. You are being spared the play-by-play guy calling Cooke "Zee-uh." Cooke gets the scoring started, but LSU scores the next two buckets.

LSU has started 5-5 from the floor, but has 3 turnovers. Tigers lead 10-9 at the media timeout.

LSU made its first seven shots before missing. LSU is subbing its posts every few possessions to keep them fresh and mix things up for Boston. If you saw LSU upset Iowa State, this looks familiar. LSU started out on fire. LSU leads 16-13. USC is controlling the glass, but has had some sloppy offense.

LSU leads 19-13 after 1Q. The Tigers shot 9-13. USC had a 9-6 rebounding edge, but it doesn't matter when you're 5-14 with 7 turnovers (and 2-4 from the line).

Boston picks up her second foul for clearing out Newby. Boston did not agree and argued with the official. She stays in the game. LSU leads 27-18 at USC has 11 turnovers.

Feagin replaces Boston. She gets shoved in the back, no call. Morris scores a breakaway layup to make it 29-18. Timeout Gamecocks with 5:02 left in the half.

Nice pass from Feagin to Saxton for a layup. Henny draws a foul and makes both FTs, but then Pointer banks in a three. Sometimes its better to be lucky than good.

Back to back baskets by Cooke make it 32-26, but then Cooke is called for a charge in transition. Aifuwa scores, and then Cooke hits an off-balance runner to make it 34-28 at halftime.

Pointer leads all scorers with 13. Cooke has 11, including 6 in the final 2 minutes. Boston has 5 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 fouls. USC committed 13 turnovers, leading to 13 LSU points and the Tigers have attempted 8 more shots. Usually USC has more attempts.

Henny, who was just 1-7 in the first half, hits a floater to start the 3Q.

After a miss, Henny draws a fast break foul on Pointer. She makes 1-2 to make it 34-31.

Boston forces a travel and Cooke spins and hits a 15 foot jumper to make it 34-33 LSU.

After a FT by Aifuwa, Boston scores inside to tie the game at 35.

Beal goes 1-2 from the line to give the Gamecocks the lead with an 8-1 run, but then Morris puts LSU back on top.

Cooke makes a pair of FTs, and then Pointer makes 1-2. We're tied at 38. Boston draws most of the Tigers, kicks to Cooke who swings to Beal, and her three rolls around and in. Gamecocks lead 41-38 at the media timeout, their largest lead of the game.

Gamecocks are 9-14 from the line, LSU is 3-6, and the Gamecocks have an 11-2 rebounding edge this quarter and 30-13 for the game.

Saxton picks up her fourth foul on a moving screen. LeLe replaces her.

After a long stretch with no scoring, we have a flurry of baskets followed by a flurry of turnovers. We end up tied at 44. with 2 minutes left in the third.

Lele is fouled on a rebound, but misses both FTs. Next possession, Boston is fouled and makes both. Gamecocks are 12-20 from the line and LSU's bigs are starting to get in foul trouble. Gamecocks lead 46-44.

Feagin is fouled away from the ball. She misses both. Boston gets the rebound, is fouled, and makes 1-2. She has her eighth straight double-double, but the Gamecocks are now 13-24 from the line.

Gamecocks lead 47-44 going into the 4Q. USC has a 37-16 rebounding advantage, but just 10 second chance points on 15 offensive boards. USC is 13-24 from the line and has 19 turnovers. For the 3Q, USC only had 6 turnovers and LSU had 4. After that offensive foul on Boston in the 2Q, Staley really got on the refs about all the contact under the basket and USC started getting the calls.

Boston posts, kicks out, reposts and scores. She forces a miss, and then finds Henny for three. Gamecocks lead 52-44 and have an 8-0 run. Point hits a tough runner in the lane. LSU really needed that.

After an LSU timeout, Morris hits at 17 foot jumper. Boston quickly answers with a layup to put the Gamecocks up 54-48. You can't hope to contain her, you can only hope the officials call some sketchy fouls to put her on the bench.

Boston drives, fakes, scores. She has 16 points, 14 rebounds (LSU has 17 rebounds as a team), 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Gamecocks lead 56-50 with 6:18 left.

Boston draws the fifth foul on Aifuwa. Aifuwa had 12 points and 4 rebounds.

Four straight misses by the Gamecocks, and Cherry hits a pullup J in transition to make it 59-56 Gamecocks. Timeout USC with 3:05 left, LSU ball.

LSU misses a pair of threes to tie. Those weren't good shots. Boston is fouled inside and makes both FTs. Gamecocks up 61-56.

Gusters gets the ball inside. Boston looked like she backed off a little bit, to avoid the foul, and Gusters scores. Timeout LSU, down 61-58 with 2:14 left.

Boston is too strong on a layup, but gets the rebound. USC milks too much of the clock and is called for a violation. Morris gets to the rim for an open look but it rims out. Less than a minute to play. Boston has the ball inside, loses control, Cooke hits a pullup 13-footer. Gamecocks lead 63-58 with 30 seconds left.

LSU is fouled on an offensive rebound. There's an argument about whether it should be a shooting foul Expect whining from Mulkey after the game. After a timeout, Morris misses the shot. Boston is fouled and makes 1-2 FTs. Gamecocks lead 64-58.

Cherry hits a three over Beal, but her foot might have been on the line. After review it's a two. Gamecocks lead 64-60 with 13.2 left, and have used their last timeout.

Saxton is fouled. She misses both, but Boston gets the rebound. She passes out to Henny, who is fouled. Henny makes both to ice it. Gamecocks win 66-60.

Boston finished with 19 points, 18 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. Cooke added 17, Henny 16. Pointer had 22 for the Tigers. Gamecocks had a 48-24 rebounding advantage and 32-7 edge in free throw attempts.
