The earliest I've seen pictures of was in 1983, but certainly we had them at some point prior to then. I know in the early 70s we had black helmets for a shirt time, but I've never seen black jerseys

I don't recall any pictures of us in black prior to Coach Morrison arriving.

I did hear it was the second time we wore all black under Coach Morrison, I think the first time was in the 1940's, I believe....

Now, with that said, I think it was the first time we wore two different color Jerseys in a game...

It was against Wake Forest in 1986... I believe we came out in black jerseys for the first half and we changed into garnet jerseys in the second half because of the down pouring rain throughout the game...

My guess is that "finish in the black" game with Clemson. Which, of course, we lost. Black helmets for seniors before that is all I remember.

Under Coach Paul Dietzel, I remembered as a kid we wore black helmets and I think it was the upper class who wore them and the sophomores and juniors wore white during the game...

I just remember us wearing both color of helmets back then...

I think it was when Black Magic Joe Morrison was here. I loved that guy, he was a tough guy. They even made a song about him called "Black Magic".

It was the 1983 home game vs. the taters. I was in high school and watched that game on closed circuit at the coliseum. It was rumored all week prior to the game that we would wear all black. The cover of the game programs removed all doubt (no picture the cover was all black). We lost 22-13 and then there was the fight after the game.

I did not know that about the program cover. Would love to see one of those.

I'm thinking it was considered bad luck to wear black in nearly all sports at one time. Same as it is with weddings and such. Joe Morrison bucked the trend... as did Dale Earnhardt. I was at Rockingham when they pulled the tarp off Earnhardt's black #3 car and introduced it to the public for the first time. Black being bad luck was a heavy topic at that time. Too weird to go in to how things ended.

Here is a still shot
