Why didn’t Tony Elliott take the Tennessee job a year ago?

That historical recessive gene that you refer to: Duke can be successful at times because of, wait for it, the schedule. You made my point.
That Duke possesses a historical recessive football gene capable of manifesting itself contemporarily in winning seasons, bowl bids, and conference championships.

Recruiting and expectations.

Tenn doesn't have a recruiting base within state in terms of number of blue chip talent. Fulmer had to recruit nationally and you still do now. It is tougher too. Much different than the luxury Florida and UGA have. Bama is also your permanent rival.

They expect national titles and competing with elite programs. It is a tough gig.

At Virginia, you just have to win more games than you lose (doable in the ACC), win 8 or 9 games every few years, beat Va Tech around 50% of the time and you'll have a job for life.
Sounds like us in the sec.

id imagine its because hes knows how hard it is to win in the SEC and how easy it is to win in the ACC. Simple as that.
I'd imagine that he knew, along with all of us that UT lately is a complete clown show and steered clear away. He is hardly the one candidate who turned down that job.

It was a brilliant move on his part. Location, fan base, recruiting area and schedule all favor UVa in my opinion. Besides, what sane person would want to hear rocky top that much.

Elliott knows how things are at UT. The fan base views UT as a national power as they used to be. They will chew a coach up and spit him out. Virginia on the other hand has a much easier schedule, and if a coach comes in and wins 7-8 games consistently, they are more than happy with that. And if he happens to do better than that for a couple years in a row, it could be a stepping stone into one of the bigger jobs.

If you watched the game Saturday, you understand why UT is viewed as a sleeping giant. CJH was blown away by the atmosphere. Despite being irrelevant for 15 years, our tradition, history, and trophy case remain the envy of 95% of college programs. To think that Virginia? Is somehow in the same stratosphere is ludicrous. Tennessee has more money than anyone if they want to spend it.

Tennessee has been a huge disappointment for so long- so underachieving - a total mess in so many ways given what they were when people in their 50s and 60 were in college.

I don't make predictions for the future though.

Give it a couple years. They liked Butch Jones at one point too. Tennessee is fast approaching a quarter century since being relevant. And during their last two very recent coaching searches, they were turned down by enough coaches to field a baseball team.

we won the east in 2007 so not quite 1/4 century? Exaggerate much? For a school that has been relevant on the national landscape very little, you sure do talk alot about the Vols.

YET people at UT still care! No fan base deserves a winner as much as UT.

We've been served up slop for a very long time, mostly our own doing, from hiring bad administrators to coaches, We could not have hired three worse coaches in Dooley, Jones, and Pruitt if we had tried.

If a coach is overly concerned about who they would have to play, he's definitely not the right guy for the job.

The bigger question is, why would anyone go dig up a thread about Tony Elliott, UVA, and UT from December 2021 and move it back to the top of a Gamecock forum. If all three of these fall on their face….it will be fine with most on here.
