Will braves change name?

I guess FSU is fortunate there was only one tribe of Seminoles to deal with. It appears their arrangement has worked well. I think it would in most cases if the same approach were used.

Well, it doesn't seem to be working to well for the Braves, Indians and Redskins. I don't think any approach would work at this point in time. The deal between FSU and the Seminoles was made years ago and I think is really tenuous at best in this day and age of Political Correctness.

I don't think its about the name changes as much as it is about the fact that we find racism in things that aren't intended to be racist.

Bingo, there is the POINT head on! I'm going to quote another poster "this is a case where the demand for racism exceeds the actual racism".

>.> The only name I was referring to (and one of the only ones you didn't list) was Redskin. Why is it people always try to add points I wasn't even making and argue those? Warrior, Brave, Seminole, Chief, even Indian are not insults (though Indian is wildly inaccurate and I'm genuinely shocked it stuck after people realized this wasn't India). Redskin is. If the Indians want to change their name because of some deep seeded white guilt, that's on them.

Well, regardless of which name you were referring to the Redskins, Braves, Chiefs, etc all come under the same Political Correctness category.

Why is it offensive to some for a sports team to have a nickname like the Braves, Indians, Redskins, etc.?

If someone wanted to change the nickname of the Marion High School athletic teams to The Freddie.B.Cockys it would not be offensive to me whatsoever. Well, the way our high school teams play I would be a little offended but not much. I mean the football team couldn't tackle my 98 year old one legged grandpa.

But heck, if they were announcing the play by play of one of the high school sports team and made the comment "boy those Freddie.B.Cockys are playing like gang busters tonight, I would actually be honored and not offended.

I have some new names for the Braves, Indians and Redskins.

Cleveland Indians to Cleveland I"ndiana Jones", just piss off Ohio have their neighbor's state name as a mascot...

Washington Redskins to Washington "Deadskins"... No explanation needed...

Atlanta Braves to Atlanta "Home of the Brave!"

Why Washington has failed in this move is anyone’s guess........it has been mentioned for years.
Because the Washington case has already been adjudicated. A person sued some time ago, but lost due to the amount of time that had passed between the naming of the team and the claim of offensiveness. Whether that case will still stand today is anyone's guess. But it is precedent.

To be fair, it's only ever the white liberals who get upset over this stuff.

I don't follow them, but it wouldn't bother me if I did. I think that's kind of the point a lot of people are making. This whole exercise is silly. I seriously wish all major sports teams would just give the naming rights to BLM, the Native Americans, etc. and put an end to this once and for all. It would be good to end all of this within the year instead of letting it drag on for the next ten.

I wouldn't try to work with them on name changes. Compromises and discussions are futile. I'd just give them the naming rights.

While we are at it, let’s let them rename our streets, Universities, towns, states, and remove any remnants of our countries past. Let them change the history books. Let them defund the police. Let them change our flag and get rid of holidays. Let them riot and pilfer our neighborhoods.

Oh wait, this is already happening...

Now, don’t get me wrong change can be good. But, unchecked and non-legislative change is an attempted coop. We have the best system in the world. Yet it is not good enough. Our forefathers were brilliant. Not perfect so they created a government that can modify and check itself. Where does it stop? So, change the Redskins name. Name them the Potbelly Pigs for all I care. Where does it end? One persons offense is another’s opinion that it is not. Since when has our society become so sensitive? Did it start with the quasi fixation that everyone is a winner? Everyone get a trophy? No red pens to grade school tests?

We are so far away from “ask not what your country can do for you, but what can you do for your country.”

“adjudicated”???.......mod, someone has hijacked Bat’s account......this is not the type of verbiage I know her to use in the fairgrounds, much less Founders Park!........well, maybe once when some young drunk was adjudicated across from our parking spots:)

ALL TEAMS MUST CHANGE NAMES

Subject: On Redskins Name Change

Following is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an article he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins. . No matter which side you are on in the matter of renaming the Washington Redskins, this guy is buttoned up funny...

Dear Mr. Page: I agree with our Native American population. I am
highly jilted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins.
One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native
Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be
careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and
courtesy, we must move forward.

Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the
Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the
reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get
rid of the Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of
militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us white
folk.

The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a
team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference
to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men's lives. I
am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion
among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New
Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and
pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the
Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh
Pirates!

Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message
to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting
or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children.

The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a
growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children. The
Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our
children.

The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Wrong message
to our children.

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out
to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become
involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the
do-nothing Congress loves.

As a die-hard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in
mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the
Oregon State women's athletic teams to something other than "the
Beavers (especially when they play Southern California. Do we really
want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers???

I always love your articles and I generally agree with them. As for
the Redskins name I would suggest they change the name to the
"Foreskins" to better represent their community, paying tribute to the
dick heads in Washington DC.

You are probably correct. Didn’t the Seminole Tribe approve of the FSU nickname? If so, do you think they would have any influence?

Yes, the Seminole Tribe approved of the FSU nickname but that was many years ago. I don't know how binding the agreement was and what was the extend of the agreement. But it won't take much for some of those political activities to make a big issue of the matter.

That young drunk, Clemson grad btw, was lucky all he got was "adjudicated" that day for what he did.

Whether it's tenuous or not is for the tribal leaders to say. Find a local tribe that has an identity with the area and see what can be done. If they say no, nothing lost. Aligning with specific local tribes in a respectful way holds promise. General characterizations like those you mentioned aren't going to stand.

When one is talking about the name Braves, Redskins and Indians there is not one tribe to negotiate with but it's a national issue therefore much more involved.

Living peoples shouldn’t be mascots for any team or product unless they willingly agree to it and financially benefit from it. And not a one time benefit, but for the entirety that their image and/or likeness is used as a blatant stereotype for consumers’ enjoyment.

Indians really should go.
The only reason Native Americans were called Indians, is because Christopher Columbus gave them that name as he thought he had indeed reached India. Inexplicably the nomenclature stuck.
In reality the only Indians in this country is due to either they or their forefathers really did come from India.

"Braves" is one thing. But "Indians" and "Redskins" are not appreciated by many of the people who are so called. I'm discussing a way to honor people. It's also something that teams can do on their own.

Well, I guess I am due a big check. The Chicago White Sox have been capitalizing on my race. While I am at it, my last name is that of a beer company. I am owed more money. Whooo hooo! This is socialism at its finest. Take from them and give to me.

Oh and I guess that I am also a “Cowboy”. I spent a few summers on a farm riding horses rounding up cattle. I also have owned a Bulldog. Does that count too? I could be rich!

Is a Mountaineer offensive or how about a Volunteer? Maybe a Titan? Should we change everything to nothing so that no one is ever offended to include even inanimate objects? Would the coats be offended if we name a team the hangers?

You just made some excellent points to counter Todd argument.

My point was simply while FSU for example got permission from the Seminole Tribe to use their name as a team nickname is great. But, teams with generic names like Indians, Braves, Redskins, etc could not collectively get an agreement from all the Indians in the nation to retain said nicknames.

Yes, my race is a sock! You know my teacher used to say there is no dumb questions; but she was wrong and you proved it.

I’m not sure you understand what the White Sox mascot is, but that’s ok if you identify as a sock. Do you find sock puppets offensive, or are they ok by you? Asking for my three year old daughter.

And no one is suggesting they do so...? It seems like you're intentionally conflating ideas to suggest that racial slurs are on the same level as descriptive names, and that a team with a tribe specific name is on the same grounds as far more generic names that would not be afforded the same protections. I don't mean to be rude, but I can't think of a nice way to ask: are you playing dumb to make a bad argument, or do you really not get the difference after several people have explained it quite articulately?

I'm aware of that, which is why I am advocating a more surgical approach.

So the name Indians should be ok, correct? Many Americans referred to them as Injuns. The same group called Accadians, Caguns. Just wondering if those terms should be of limits too.

1. Injuns was always an incorrect description of the native people as I pointed out.
2. Accadians were french colonists who then were displaced by the British.
Through years of dialect Accadians became Cajun. Should Cajuns be off limits as you ask ? I am not the one to answer that question. You should direct that question to those of that descent.

So how many on here are real big NFL Washington football fans ?
Because if you're like me, I don't follow them at all, so if they decide to change their team name I doubt I could care less.
I followed them while Swearinger was there. The name is the least of the worries of that organization.

Obviously you have failed to see the sarcasm and ridiculous of my comparison. It was meant to be equally as ridiculous as your opinion about all of the name changes.

I don’t play with socks. Never did with my kids either. They are meant to be on ones feet. I don’t judge you or your kid for it. And, I don’t identify you as someone who has a foot fetish because you choose to.

Angry sock? Really? If you will go read my posts you will see that I am a glass half full, pull for the underdog, love my country, love my University, family guy. I have survived more in life than I deserve and am grateful for outliving the prognosis given by doctors. I just turned 50 and live by the premise of “never give up... never give up” - by Jimmy Valvano.

Sure, I get angry at times but it centers around things that I see as unjust. Usually how someone is treated or being misrepresented. (Also people who don’t use the merge lane to speed up to get into the flow of traffic gets me sometimes) I also despise when people lie or have no factual basis for claims that they present as truths. I enjoy debating and will sometimes choose to play devil’s advocate to stimulate conversations.

I have learned not to take life too seriously and especially someone like you that makes a lot of assumptions. I am neither offended or angered about anything that you have posted.

Appears as though you might have some issues that you are trying your best to cast upon others. Might want to wipe the fog off of your mirror so that you can see yourself. Hopefully; you like what is there.
