Worst baseball team we have had in decades.

Coaches should be given 2 years to perform. That is it. The portal allows you to bring in exactly who you want within a 2 year period. Some coaches like contact hitters, some like power hitters. High velocity pitchers and location pitchers. You have 2 years to get what you like to win. After that you can see yourself out. Injuries are from lack of stretching and poor arm care and management. Hard to pin that on current coach as they could have received inadequate care at the last college or 2. Hell even HS. Saw a kids throw 115 pitches last night in SCHSL baseball.

I'm certain Mainieri would like to hit a Press Conference and say "Get me some flippin' players, and I'll win you some flippin' games."

When Tanner was on a roll, we were consistently in the Top 5 or Top 10 in recruiting. (typically Top 3 in the SEC)

The year before the NIL landed we had the #3 recruiting class in the country behind Florida and Vandy.

These last three years of recruiting, we've averaged 2nd to last in the SEC.

And where did we finish this season -- 2nd to last in the SEC.

I can’t remember how many times we had runners on second or third or bases loaded and couldn’t scratch a run home. IMHO that has a lot to do with coaching.

We were actually slightly above average in runners left on base in the SEC if you review the batting average and base-on-balls against runs scored.

Our glaring issues were that we couldn't hit or pitch with any consistency. Need more talent.

Tanner’s hiring decisions is why I dropped out of the Gamecock Club 10 years ago after being a Full Scholarship donor for 40 years. Sad indeed what our men’s sports program has become.
I am old school and I have quit all monetary support partly because of Tanner running down the sports, and the final nail was because of the change from amateur athleics to semi-pro sports, NIL and the portal have pretty much ended most of the enthusiasm I had for college sports. As an alumni from quite a few years back, it just isn't the same anymore. But life goes on, people wanted pro sports and they have it.

Yep. The cool kids thought paying players would be great. Not me. I knew it would destroy what made college athletics great. It has and it will only get worse. Hell, I don't even follow recruiting anymore.

Not to just ARGUE (i guess i am, lol) Leaving runners on base is a stat that includs left on 1st with two outs. Is there a stat for Runners on second and third with less than two outs and STRANDED?? that was a HUGE issue, the next three would STRIKE OUT... Try a squeeze, ANYTHING!!

I agreed whne it was first thrown out there. Too many VALUABLE "Role players" are left out in the cold because the few stars get all the CASH!!

I never had a good feeling about it but perhaps it may have worked if it stood alone. The biggest problem imo was it came just after the creation of the portal. Those two together were always going to be bad news. One or the other would have been bearable. The combination of both... never. If I had to guess, paying players isnt going away. That leaves transfer rules. Let's go back to sitting out a year. And this is coming from a guy that used to think sitting out a year was wrong... that was before pay to play. They totally screwed that up.

Same here. Would love to start watching competitive SC baseball, but under this “coach” that ain’t happening!!
On a positive note, our pitching is so bad, one would think just about every pitcher out there looking for playing time should give us a hard look. That said, I'd like to hear an explanation from the pitching coach as to why our veteran pitchers have digressed over the year. There ain't no other way to say it other than he has been a complete failure.

Agreed, wasn’t Becker good last year?

decent I guess. I expected improvement this year. Didn't see it. Same with Eskew. Now I cant say I have seen all their outings, but the ones I have seen... well lets just say hitting a batter is no fun to watch with runners on base. When we miss, we miss big. Not sure what we are trying to do with these guys to make them better but sadly for them, its tough to watch.

Well, I've quit complaining for the most part, it is now water under the bridge, it is just a change of the guards like everything else all around us. Many of those in the younger generations (not knowing your age) are perfectly fine with no longer having amateur sports, paying players from school funds and from outside sources (NIL), open portal (as in similar to open borders), and not having players that you can count on to be there over 1 year. It's just a nostalgic, old-school thing for me, a passion for my alma mater, getting to know the names of the players and pulling for them for 4 years+, a sense that they actually loved the university they were playing for. I'm not naive enough to think that's why these kids always played for our university, but many did, some still do, but the $$ rules now, period.
I do not see the new way of college sports, NIL, portal, payment from the schools, etc. helping USC, a mid-tier SEC team at best in all the major sports and imo this will make it harder to move up in the conference.
Congress will be getting involved soon, contracts will be put in place, sports agents will get even more involved, on and on, just not what I want to talk about, give me X's and O's and which QB and RB is signing on for the next 4 years, on and on. But it is what it is, college sports will carry on, and thrive, financially, but without me, as this generation fades, but I enjoyed attending the university when Rogers won the Heisman and Black Magic and the Fire Ant D ruled. Yes, that means I'm old! Things were different, simpler, and better imo, and I enjoyed it all, no regrets.

Now that you mention it, I think what we are witnessing is the death of the walk-on... the best hope of a guy who wanted to play for the team he grew up pulling for. Many a great player started as a walk-on and eventually earned a scholarship and went on to have a great career. Those are the guys we should feel for. May they rest in peace.
