You know you are getting old if you can remember (fill in the blank).

If you grew up in Columbia, SC and were on the Cactus Quave Show, Channel 10, with J. P. Sidewinder (the villain) and Chief Silly Horse and big fat Gay guy dressed like an Indian Chief. Not that there is anything wrong with that!
On Kennedy's assassination, I was in a ninth grade PE class at A. C. Flora High School on the athletic field next to the tennis courts when they announced it over the PA system ...

A car with push buttons for the transmission to the left of the steering wheel on the dash. (DeSoto)

When there were very few interstate highways. (I think I remember going to Newberry to visit my cousins on 176 and 76.)

I remember both of them. My great uncle had a Chrysler product with the push button trans. I think it was a Valiant.

Wheelo toy, slinky, model cars and trucks that you put together with that really strong smelling glue, toy airplanes with the little tiny gasoline engine, putting cards in your bicycle spokes, cars with vinyl tops, a banana bike with banana seat, high rise handlebars and sissy bar.

I had a paper route.
Mine was waxing the balls and blowing the greens at Putt Putt on Knox Abbott Drive. Got a free game and a dollar an hour, or maybe a dollar for the whole shift, can't remember. Anyway, great practice for Kiddies Day Tournament on Saturday mornings. I won twice ....ever. Should have know when I hopped on my bike later and played night golf over on Sunset and at Cedarwood par 3, I would never be any good at that sport.

I remember my oldest brother coming home one night after going out to a club on Rosewood Drive close to USC campus called The Box and seeing a group called The Allman Brothers and saying they were pretty good.

Making your own cinnamon toothpicks.

And on a related note. Piling in the station wagon for a weekly trip to the day old bread store... especially for the cinnamon rolls. I dont think them rolls ever made it home.

Alarms going off for black-outs during WWII
A dear friend of mine, when a young girl, used to feed cookies to German prisoners who were being incarcerated here in Columbia. She also told me a story about how a couple of these German POW's escaped and were recaptured, causing quite a bit of a stir in the city.

I have seen a couple of places in Columbia where German prisoners were held. I understand they actually had a lot of freedom and some even dated local women. There also was a building on Ft. Jackson that had slot machines and other gambling/casino type games for the German prisoners to play.

Germans are good people who were led astray by a charismatic leader and one of the main reasons he was able to do that was because of how unfairly Germany was treated after WW1.
If not for that no Hitler and no WW2.

I remember that well.

How about Beach Blanket Bingo? Followed by How to Stuff a Wild Bikini? My dad took us to the drive in over in Barnwell to see both, if I recall. Why, I can’t imagine. My mother was away for a couple of days, so he and a friend took us kids.

Bikinis were first introduced in 1946....but I remember the splash they made in the early to mid 60s.
