A dear friend of mine, when a young girl, used to feed cookies to German prisoners who were being incarcerated here in Columbia. She also told me a story about how a couple of these German POW's escaped and were recaptured, causing quite a bit of a stir in the city.Alarms going off for black-outs during WWII
I have seen a couple of places in Columbia where German prisoners were held. I understand they actually had a lot of freedom and some even dated local women. There also was a building on Ft. Jackson that had slot machines and other gambling/casino type games for the German prisoners to play.A dear friend of mine, when a young girl, used to feed cookies to German prisoners who were being incarcerated here in Columbia.
