Interesting thought and wanted the board's opinion...

I know that people may not like this but I was running this through my head last night and wanted to gauge where everyone is at with this. Would our athletic department be better off right now overall if JBJ doesn't hit the game tying run against Oklahoma in 2010? Think of the chain reaction of that event - if JBJ doesn't hit the tying home run

1. No Michael Roth discovery
2. No natty in 2010
3. Ray not gaining rapid upward momentum leading to him being AD

If Ray isn't AD:

1. No Muschamp
2. Frank would've been fired
3. We would've switched to Nike or Adidas
4. Less injuries due to UA shoes and better recruits

Curious to hear y'all's thoughts.

NFL to Allow Throwback Helmets in 2022

Good news. I know it’s a uniform thread but these throwbacks are usually fun. Which helmets do you want to see back now that the one shell rule is gone?

Mine are all but guaranteed to show up. The creamsicle Bucs is probably the most desired throwback out there. Patriots throwbacks are fun too. Eagles need to ditch their current look and just go back to Kelly Green permanently.

*** LIVE: Shane Beamer Camp, Day 9 - OL/DL Camp and 7-on-7 tourney (June 24) ***

Gamecock Central will once again bring you live coverage today for Day 9 of the The Shane Beamer Camp circuit. Like last week, Thursday and Friday will feature an OL/DL Camp and a team 7-on-7 passing tournament. The OL/DL camp starts bright and early with registration at 7:30 a.m. and runs through 12:30 while the 7-on-7 tournament starts at 9 a.m. and will go to 4 p.m.

** We'll have our eyes on Laurens (S.C.) class of 2022 three-star wide receiver Jayden McGowan as his team is competing in the 7-on-7 tournament. McGowan will essentially be performing to land an offer from the Gamecocks after he broke off a blazing 40-yard-dash at camp earlier this year but pulled up lame at the end with an injured hamstring.

McGowan isn't quite 100 percent at this time but has been cleared for action and is an intriguing slot receiver and one of the fastest players in the state.

** Thursday's OL/DL camp will give Gamecock Central its first opportunity to see Dillon (S.C.) class of 2024 offensive tackle Josiah Thompson in action. The 6-foot-7, 286-pounder already has offers from South Carolina and Kentucky and could be a national-level prospect.

Thompson already took a successful unofficial visit to South Carolina earlier this month and now will get the chance to work with Greg Adkins for the first time.

** Marietta (Ga.) Walton class of 2022 three-star offensive tackle Cason Henry landed an offer from South Carolina in late May and he'll get his first look at the program on Thursday.

The 6-foot-6, 280-pounder has a nice offer list featuring a combination of SEC and ACC schools among other conferences.

Henry won't be participating in the OL/DL camp but will instead be taking a look at the program on an unofficial visit.

** Another prospect we're intrigued to take a look at is Mauldin (S.C.) class of 2022 safety/linebacker Deuce Caldwell, whose Mauldin team will participate in the 7-on-7 tournament.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Caldwell has drawn praise from local high school coaches for his ability with the biggest question being whether he's a defensive back or linebacker at the next level.

South Carolina has continued to evaluate Caldwell while Clemson has looked at him as a possible linebacker recruit.

But Caldwell has hinted on social media this week that he could be finished with the process and that would seem to point to a likely pledge to North Carolina.

Mauldin is also, of course, home to four-star cornerback Jeadyn Lukus, though it's not apparent if he'll be on the trip and he's seemed focused on places other than South Carolina.

** Gaffney (S.C.) High is participating in Thursday's 7-on-7 and they've got at least two prospects we'll be taking a look at.

Class of 2023 quarterback Grayson Loftis is a big-armed QB with early offers from App State, Georgia, Kentucky, Marshall and West Virginia.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound prospect impressed at the Rivals Atlanta Camp this spring and this will be our first time seeing him in a 7-on-7 setting.

Insight on latest transfer portal pickup, candidates to play third base

South Carolina picked up a commitment this week out of the transfer portal from Missouri left fielder Brandt Belk, becoming the second pickup out of the portal so far.

The first was App State right-hander Noah Hall, who grew up a Gamecock fan and committed a little over a week ago.

Belk didn’t grow up a South Carolina fan, but what did help get South Carolina in the door was some connections assistant Trip Couch had with Belk and his family when Belk was coming out of high school.

Couch was an assistant at Houston, Belk’s hometown, and actually recruited him out of high school to play for the Cougars. Belk ultimately ended up at Pepperdine before going to Missouri a few years later.

When he entered the portal, Couch reached out to the family and Belk and the recruitment went from there. Belk did take a couple visits to some other schools not in the SEC (he didn’t get into specifics on where) but committed to South Carolina without coming to Columbia this summer.

He was sold enough, he said, on the atmosphere and facilities after playing at Founders this year. Belk had a really good series in Columbia, going 5-for-12 with two RBI and three doubles.

As for what he brings to the team, it’s a veteran bat and a versatile defender that’s played in the SEC for a year and seen high-level pitching. Belk’s brief 2020 season was explosive, slashing .457/.544/.652 and in his first full season at Missouri he went .273/.320/.416.

The biggest thing about Belk is he doesn’t strike out, getting punched out just 26 times in 161 at-bats last season and 16 times in 100 at-bats in league play.

He struck out once every 6.2 at-bats last season. Of the Gamecocks this season with at least 100 at-bats, only Colin Burgess (6.3) was better. In SEC play Belk struck out once every 6.3 at-bats, second only on the South Carolina roster to Burgess again (6.6).

His batting average on balls in play (BABIP) was .311 on the year and .286 in league play.

The Gamecocks are also determined to bring in more left-handed bats into the program and Belk certainly fits the mold.

Defensively, Belk told me he feels very comfortable playing in the outfield and either corner infield spot. He played a lot of left field this year for Missouri but has played first base as well.

South Carolina is currently scheduled to bring back David Mendham, who started at first base the majority of last season, but could lose Andrew Eyster, Brady Allen and potentially Josiah Sightler in the outfield and needs to build depth there.

Plus, all but one player who started at third base (Jack Mahoney) are off the roster.

Speaking of third base, Brennan Milone is in the transfer portal along with Jeff Heinrich and Joe Satterfield’s eligibility is up. So the Gamecocks will likely have a brand new face playing third base next year.

There are a handful of players who could play there in the incoming class. Cooper Kinney, if he comes to school, could play there. Kinney, though, is getting buzz as someone who could slip into the first round of the draft and would mean him bypassing college altogether.

His high school teammate and top 200 prospect Vito Valincius can also play there along with another top 150 prospect in Carson Hornung, a later high school add to the 2021 class. Hornung is also a left-handed bat.

Mahoney, who won’t pitch this year coming off Tommy John surgery, could also play third as well.

Another Bragging Dad

On the way back from Tampa on Sunday, my 12 year old reads something about the Coastal Carolina football camp this week. So, as we always do, we make last minute plans, and my wife and him both head there for the last 3 days. On day 3 of the 4 day camp, Chadwell yelled at him to go play with the 8th graders. Chadwell tells my wife today that he had to do that because the 7th graders couldn't hang with him. He then tells her, "You have a hell of a good player there".

Tony Annan hires another men's soccer assistant

From South Carolina media relations

South Carolina men's soccer head coach Tony Annan has named Will Lukowski as his newest assistant coach to join the staff, Annan announced today.

Lukowski (pronounced Lu-cow-ski) spent the past two seasons at Missouri State and worked with the program's goalkeepers. Lukowski and the MSU coaches were named the Missouri Valley Conference Coaching Staff of the Year in 2019 and 2020-21 as the Bears won back-to-back MVC regular-season titles and an MVC Tournament championship.

He joins Annan alongside assistant coach Alec Purdie, who was announced on May 21.

"Bringing Will on to the staff will give us a great coach with a focus on our goalkeepers, as well as being a very knowledgeable coach with excellent organization skills to help support the team and the technical staff," Annan said. "I am really excited and looking forward to getting to work this season with the great staff we are assembling."

During the spring 2021 campaign, Lukowski helped the Bears' goalkeepers to post six shutouts and allow just 10 goals on the year. His coaching was rewarded with a second straight all-conference selection for keeper Michael Creek.

In his first season with the Bears in 2019, Lukowski was instrumental in guiding the MSU keepers to post a 0.630 goals against average and nine shutouts, which led to a MVC Goalkeeper of the Year nod for Creek.

Lukowski came to Springfield after two years at University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky., where he handled international recruiting, travel and assisted with the program's day-to-day-operations. He earned his masters of science in March of 2019 from Cumberlands.

A native of Greenwood, Mo., he earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Wright State in 2016, majoring in organizational leadership after finishing the last two seasons of his soccer career for coach Bryan Davis. He allowed just one goal his senior season for the Raiders in 2016 and was named to the Horizon League Honor Roll each of his last two campaigns.

He began his Division I collegiate career at Indiana University, where he redshirted during the 2014 season. He played the previous two years at Iowa Western Community College, where he led his club to the 2013 national championship with a 25-0 record. He was named an NSCAA and NJAA All-American both seasons. Lukowski led the nation in goals against average (0.44) as a freshman and posted a 0.31 GAA as a sophomore with 22 wins and 16 shutouts. He finished his junior college career with a record of 42-0-1 in goal and was named first-team Academic All-Region both years.

Prior to college, Lukowski was a standout at Lee's Summit High School. He holds NSCAA Level I and Level II Goal Keeping diplomas and has worked with outstanding soccer organizations such as Sporting Springfield, Club Ohio and Excel Goalkeeping.
