Recruiting Rank vs. Results at USC | An Anomaly

This is difficult to explain away.

We have not been ranked in the CF Top 25 (probably the Top 40) since 2014. We did receive a pre-season hype rank in 2017 (#24) but never in the regular season.

During that same 8-year drought, we've had an average recruiting rank of 17/18th. (tie)

We are the only school during that time frame to have never been ranked in the Top 25 and also average a Top 20 recruiting class. The only one.

Most schools with Top 20 recruits have made a home in the polls year after year.

Gamecocks Shutout Bulldogs...

In Women's Soccer:

Carolina is now 6-1-3 and 1-1 in the SEC.

FROM USC:

ATHENS, GA – The No. 8 ranked women’s soccer team powered through 81 minutes of a scoreless game, until the first and only goal of the evening put the Gamecocks on top 1-0 to take the victory over Georgia. The win marked the first in conference play for South Carolina this season.

The first half was a possession battle between the Gamecocks and Bulldogs, with the first shot of the game coming in the 6th minute from junior Catherine Barry.

The Bulldogs put up their first shot of the game 13 minutes later, but the attempt was blocked by South Carolina. Georgia would return the favor in the 20th minute, blocking a second shot from Barry. Putting on the boosters, Georgia gave themselves three more chances in the span of five minutes, all off target.

The Gamecocks made the effort coming close two more times in the first half, but were unable to get points up on the board before 45 minutes was up. The teams headed into the locker room 0-0.

Barry got things started for South Carolina in the second half, taking her third shot of the day in the 51st minute off a corner kick but came off wide to the left. In the 56th minute, sophomore Payton Patrick got the ball to the back of the net but a proceeding handball call took the point off the board to keep things at 0-0.

After a quiet 20 minutes, Patrick managed to find the net once more in the 81st minute after a serve from Barry to put the Gamecocks up 1-0 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game. The goal marked the first for Patrick this season.

South Carolina finished the game with a 13-11 shot advantage, and took six corners on the night. Barry ended with five shots, and senior goalkeeper Heather Hinz recorded one save.

The Gamecocks will return home to Columbia to take on Arkansas on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2:00 p.m. in Stone Stadium.

Weekly Recruiting Wrap Up: Two New Offers, Visitors List and More

By the way, you've probably noticed that these weekly recruiting wrap-ups now have a sponsor. We try to keep ads pretty non-intrusive here, but we do have room for a few more sponsorships if any small business owners would like to discuss it, just shoot me a message on here.

Four-star WR Mazeo Bennett insider scoop, notes on SC-Clemson battle for ATH

Top WR Mazeo Bennett high on Gamecocks after back-to-back home game visits

Notes:
Visited back-to-back home games for Georgia and Georgia State, following July 31 Shane Beamer cookout weekend in Columbia. Could make nice pair with potential 6-foot-1 three-star WR Brandon Rhemman (St. Joseph's, New Jersey, 10 offers), who also visited for Border War rivalry game vs. Georgia on September 17.

South Carolina with advantage over Clemson to land Bennett: “South Carolina is definitely one of my top schools right now in my decision-making process. They’ve definitely set the bar for recruiting for me,” he said.

After a news tip was given to Gamecock Scoop in July that he could possibly sign with Clemson, we've learned that the Tigers (might not) be in the mix after all, according to Mazeo.

“In my opinion, they’ve got a long way to go. Me, being an instate guy, they’ve got to catch up. A lot of these schools have been recruiting me for awhile now and have already offered. (Clemson)’s got to play catch up. It’s a catch-up game with them,” Bennett said.

Importance of Justin Stepp on Recruiting Trail: And in a college football recruiting world where relationships are king, the Columbia native, Pelion graduate, and former Furman Paladins star (2003-2006) knows that he is not only recruiting Mazeo, but also his family.

“He just wants to make sure that he has a relationship with not only me, but also my parents and sister,” Bennett said, whose sister is currently attending the University of South Carolina in pursuit of a hard-earned bachelor’s degree.
