2021-2022 WBB Team

I really hope Paige is ok, because if she is out for the year and we win the championship, UConn fans will claim our title is illegitimate I can already see it now. No I want to play them at full strength.

Geno has a history of running up scores and it has never bitten him on the ass. That was just the price opponents paid, “Welcome to the big time kid, don’t like getting humiliated, well eff you.” For some strange reason he got a pass.

Well it bit him today. Bueckers had foot surgery this summer and was late starting fall practice due to rehab.

The ONLY reason she was on the court was to run up the score. Here is a segment lifted from the ESPN article

When asked why she was still on the floor even with Connecticut having a large lead, Auriemma was candid.

"I don't have an answer for why she was in the game," Auriemma said. "But yeah, I don't like our team without her on the court."
If they didn't play in such a crappy conference they wouldn't have to run up the score to prove themselves. They do play a strong out of conference schedule but they really need big wins to wow the pollsters, especially in today's more competitive womens game.

I think its more her EGO than the coach. Press conf:

"I don't have any answer of why she was in the game".
"She doesn't like to come out."
"I don't like our team without her on the court".
"She never wants to come out.
All she does is complain as to why she's not playing".

Seriously?? So she's the only one to develop. Selfish. Yes, the injury can happen any time - practice, walking whatever. And, I understand if its a close game but, you're up by 18 with 0.38 secs to go. Selfish!!!

Thank God our coach's not like that and has a backbone.

Even still I hope she's back and ready for January.

For both Geno and Dawn there is no such thing as garbage time.
For Geno that means leave the starters in the game, hone their game, run up the score EVEN if the other team has pulled their starters.

For Dawn it means pull the starters, maybe even a little early, reward your bench with court time. Demand that they play D and run the offense. No wild or selfish play. Prove to me you are trustworthy and earn more time. 15 or 40 point win Dawn doesn’t care, she knows she kicked your ass. She doesn’t need a number to validate her

I don't really buy this theory, UConn is the face of women's college basketball and they are literally right around the corner from ESPN, they don't need to blowout teams to get noticed. In this game they were already up by 19 with less than 1 minute to go with all the starters in, this was overkill at it's fullest.

I agree that this is selfish thinking if true, but again this falls on the coach. Whose in charge and whose running the show. He's always been one to run up the score and keep his rotations very limited.

They're in tandem. And, I don't think he's lying about her whining on the bench and complaining about playing time. She wants the highlights, media attention and NIL. And, when you have a coach who likes to run up the score. Just a bad combo. But, like you said who's the adult and who recruits all those other kids sitting there.

It's weird: the injury to John Metchie of Bama yesterday didn't look all that bad. He was walking around afterwards. He did an interview with the SEC Network and said he felt OK. Now, I'm seeing he may have torn his ACL.

ACL impacts lateral movement of an athlete. A person can walk normally with minimal impeded range of motion, but when they try to move sideways back and forth, then that's when they know you are injured......

If I'm not mistaken I saw Raven walking around normally without crutches.

Recently? I know immediately after the injury she had a brace on at the SD game. And I saw her about 10 days ago in a brace and using crutches.

My assumption, having talked to several of our women soccer players about the process is........
The swelling has gone away and she is doing intense prehab. This to strengthen the leg so that rehab is much shorter. You lose so much muscle mass and tone being in a cast for a lengthy time.

It also probably means the ligament itself was severely damaged and they are going to use a cadaver ligament as a transplant.

So I guess the SEC won the challenge with the Big XII? I haven't seen the final results, but with even Auburn and Florida winning, I assuming the SEC won it.

Who do you think the 2nd best team is in the SEC?

A&M was picked to finish 2nd, but they were a big disappointment yesterday. They have two 2nd team all conference guards who were badly outplayed.

I guess UT is my pick right now, considering they have been playing without Burrell. Although, I like our matchup with them because DS can play her tall lineup against them.

btw, Michelle Voepel has NC State and UCONN ranked #2 and #3.

We won 6-4 last I heard. I definitely would say Tennessee is 2nd right now. They just keep winning despite their best player being out .

Looks like she calls the shots at UCONN:

“Until she was injured, Bueckers had played every minute of the game.” (ESPN)

If we were giving awards for OOC portion of the schedule

COY
Harper at UT. 2nd hardest schedule. In the top 10 SOS. Undefeated. Lost Starter Marta Suarez before the season. Burrell was at the least 1st team all SEC and a real contender for POY and she has only played 2 games

POY
Boston...... duh

All SEC (8 players)

Boston USC
Blackwell Mizzou
Howard UK
Pointer LSU
Henderson USC
Jackson Miss St

and though I do not think they will be on end of season team
Horston UT
somebody from the UT needs to be on this team. Way too many shots and a turnover machine that would make Amihere blush.

Edwards UK Great stats 19&9 that can’t be ignored BUT good Lord, the schedule is SO WEAK! In their only competitive game vs Indiana she just disappeared

Who should be there instead of Horston & Edwards.

Cooke USC
Wells A&M

6th Woman

Amihere

DPOY
Key UT
Has the best stats but come on we all know it’s Boston

COY should be Dawn Staley if the season ended today, she out coached Geno and I think she would sweep the COY awards like she did in 2020. POY Boston, All SEC team, pick 4 of ours and throw in Rhyne Howard. DPOY Boston, All SEC Defensive team should be all Gamecocks as well.

I think you have your garnet colored glasses on.

Certainly DS has coached masterfully but she has quite honestly met expectations, Harper has lost 2 starters and surpassed expectations.

As far as all SEC goes. They name 8 NOT 5. So yes on Boston, Cooke and Henny but that’s as far as it goes.

As far all defensive goes.... are we the best defensive team? Yes! But this is an individual honor not a team honor. Are there are other teams with excellent defenders. Yes! For example, just a few worth noting
Q Morrison at UGA was co DPOY with Boston last year.
LaShonda Monk, a transfer at OM was AAC DPOY last year.
Tamari Key leads the conference in blocks and is second in rebounds and was all D last year.
Khayla Pointer LSU has been all D two years running.

I think you might want to expand your vision on the full conference

I don't really have a theory. Geno always tries to run up the score. That's just how he is. I don't think it has anything with him trying to earn respect for blowing out opponents for respect. Much like I don't think Dawn is purposely trying to lose games when she inserts her bench players at the slightest reasonable lead, for better or worse, to build her bench. It's just her coaching style.

Eh!! As much as Tenn is undefeated and in the AP top 10 since 2018 - if you watch their games they are escaping wins. That doesn't mean they can't reach the final 4. But, sooner or later they won't be able to pull any more rabbits out of their hats.

UT is escaping from good teams, but that builds confidence. I can see them finishing second in SEC and maybe making sweet 16 IF Burrell returns no further

I think she's the silent birdie.
Man, I hope you're right. It is odd how the recruitment around her has been rather silent. I haven't found any recruiting service that lists schools that are possibilities for her. So that would seem to support your belief.

One score I missed was Miss State losing by 31 to Oklahoma. Oof. They need Carter to get back soon.

Update on the Paige situation

So she likely won't play for our next matchup. Honestly this could be a blessing in disguise for UConn to learn to win without her and the add her to the lineup later.
Absolutely. I'm the first guy to say adversity can have unexpected positive outcomes. If Raven Johnson doesn't go down with an injury, then we may have never learned Amihere is potentially a female Giannis. UCONN has enough talent that someone may emerge that will make them better down the road.

I think the worst part for them is that the back end of their schedule is garbage. Geno scheduled Carolina, UT, Oregon, etc in the middle of the conference season to give his team some tough competition.

Imagine Geno's dilemma when UCONN is beating St John's by 30 in the 3rd quarter in late February. He needs Bueckers to stay in the game to shake the rust, but imagine the outcry if she gets injured again, even if it's unrelated to her current injury.
