2021-2022 WBB Team

Wondering if UCONN can rebound (pardon the pun) today against UCLA. They are at home and should have learned some things after the Ga Tech loss. Game is on ABC at 1:00
Actually a "neutral site" game in NJ.
A UConn doubleheader; Women and Men vs. UCLA and St. Bonaventure. A Jimmy V Classic type of set-up.

I don't generally pull for West Coast teams but I am willing to make an exception today. Go Bruins!

UConn takes the Battle les Invalides. Not pretty but they get the win.

Where is the game thread hidden on Boneyard?
NO game threads permitted. It even applies to other games on their “General WBB” sub forum. You can’t discuss us against Maryland their during the game. Only before and after.

makes fir a cleaner board. Our football game threads and spin-offs can be horrible (and profanity-filled)

As if we didn’t see this coming........ of course Bueckers is probably not coming back in six weeks. Talk of surgery now.......

Even more Increased respect for Dawn. When Coates had her season ending injury, Dawn was a brick wall, “Alaina is hurt, we don’t know when she will be back”. Dawn protected her and carried the weight from prying eyes. Even when assholes speculated about the injury and her relationship to the program.

I’ve re-watched our game with UCONN several times and it’s obvious something was wrong with her leg. On several occasions she did a short limp after making sharp cuts. Her quick release on jump shots require hard foot plants that were slowly taking a toll on her knees. You may notice that she always played with both knees in a compression wrap.

Interesting, I gotta go back and look now.👍

Looking like it's too big risk a to his legacy and her future for her to come back this season. What's this one season in the grand scheme of things for those two. I hope she does whatever it takes to heal properly. I really think she need to bulk up over the off season.

Good chance for Geno to play the underdog card with his team (even though they have a roster full of top 10 recruits. lol).

Finally, the last comment about our offense: we rebound 45% of our misses. That's ridiculous. By far the best in the nation. If our young players could just stop turning the ball over and simply shoot the ball, our offense would improve because even if they miss, the chances are good we'll get the rebound.
Rebounds: USC 61, Maryland 34 😮

NC State blew out Maryland because Maryland was missing 3 of their main players. Two of the three were back for our game.
Maryland had one player who played 25 minutes against State; she didn't step on the floor today.

Thoughts on Maryland

First off, I had been preaching Lele wouldn’t be back til January maybe February. Well she proved me wrong!!! And OMG she is in the best shape of her career!!

Even without Henny we can beat top ten teams and are most probably the best team in the country. BUT I don’t think we can win six tournament games in a row without her.

I’m blind, I’m deaf I want be a ref!!

We are a mentally tough team. UMD scored to go up 55-53 with 6:40 left in the game. A lot of teams would have blinked, maybe even cracked. We bowed up, put on our game face and outscored them 14-4 with a million rebounds and 2 million missed free throws

We won without our pg, shooting 3-17 from 3, horrible from ft and 16 turnovers. How many teams can beat a top 10 team playing that crappy??

I’m blind, I’m deaf, I want to be a ref!!

Maryland is good and tough. Freese had a great game plan. Owusu, Reese, and Benzan are for real. We held them to 24 points below their average! We also got in their heads. 16 or 17 blocks!!! They are a physical team and we BEAT THE HELL OUT OF THEM ON THE BOARDS!!!

Saniya Rivers has proven herself to Dawn and with 22 games until the NCAA tourney to develop....... Look out! Fudd got all the ink but I’ll take Saniya every day.

I’m blind, I’m deaf, I want to be a ref

Listening to Dawn's postgame interview, it seemed that it was Freeze's goal to confuse the PG position by taking advantage of the lack of experience through a multitude of defensive arrangements. I think it was a good plan and it almost worked.

Our defense is legit! That's probably the best offense we'll face all season.

What can our resident experts tell us about Duke?
Will give a longer preview later today. But in a nutshell.

New coach who knows her stuff and will recruit with the big girls, didn’t play last year, 7 or 8 pretty talented players transferred in, plus 3 freshmen. Said hello to the world when they won their ACC-BIG10 challenge game, I think it was against Iowa State

So who do you think poses the biggest threat to having an undefeated regular season? Right now I'd say Stanford and Tennessee. I think those are the only teams on the schedule that could neutralize our post play and provide weapons in the back court to score from anywhere.

Duke is the definition of a trap game. It's a scrappy opponent with a smart coach stuck between two top 10 matchups. I don't doubt that we will not look past them but I am still concerned we will have a hangover from this Maryland game. IMO the Maryland game took more energy from our experienced players than any other game this season, so I'm scared we will miss shots we normally make just because we don't have that extra umph in our step.

I will feel a lot better when Henny is back.

I thought coach got exactly what she wanted yesterday: her team had to face some adversity. In her post-game interview, the first thing she mentioned was winning despite missing her 1st and 2nd string point guards.

The combination of Amihere & Beal did a great job against a very good point guard in Owusu. Beal shot 2-11 from the field and she still had a great game because missed shots are not necessarily a bad thing when your team is rebounding 51% of their misses. Beal had 10 rebounds of her own.

Just a gut feeling: Henderson plays yesterday if the matchup was different. Owusu is a physical load and Dawn didn't want Henderson or Zia on her. I suspect Destanni plays against Duke. But I also think coach and the whole team REALLY want to beat Stanford, so maybe she keeps her out another game. Also, I think the plan was to have Lele ready for the Stanford game. Obviously she's not going to play 25 minutes; just 10 minutes would be significant.

I watched a couple of Duke games. Solid team. They are going to be pumped Wednesday. When you're the #1 team, you should expect everyone's best. I like the matchup on paper, mainly because their best player, Celeste Taylor, is going to see a whole lotta Brea Beal on her. Taylor's going to need help from some other players, and Duke does have several players who can hit from the perimeter.

They have a solid big in Jade Williams. Duke really can't afford for her to get in foul trouble. We are going to score a lot of paint points even when she's in the game.

I think we'll continue to see more Saniya Rivers against Duke. She's struggling to make any shots (again, not the worst thing on this team, as long as she can limit her turnovers), but her defense is outstanding. She did a nice job whether matched up against Bibby or Benzan yesterday. We finally have another long wing defender to compliment Brea. Dawn clearly has a lot of confidence in Rivers, playing 25 minutes yesterday instead a veteran guard, Littleton.

I think they are due for a good shooting night after the Maryland game and Dawn was right. It was a good thing it was home. Women's refs are bad and so we're these. No idea of what a charge is. They need Henderson's shooting. I'm surprised Littleton didn't get some playing time. It must be because of her defense.

If you listen carefully at this point in the game, you can hear Maryland guard Benzan screaming repeatedly, "box out! box out!"

Aliyah got the offensive rebound off the missed free throw anyway. She's amazing.

I finally got to see a game in person for at least the first time in 2 to 3 years. It was very exciting game and not the most well executed offense but the team never looked scared of the moment. Huge win yesterday and the kind of close contest that can play divedends down the road. So excited to witness Lele comeback and Rivers starting to show what she can do as well. I think Lele's check-in was probably one the loudest moments of the game. With all things considered I thought we weathered the storm well and coach should have plenty of tape to show the team on what we can improve on.

That's the missing piece right now. That young woman has to get well - and stay well.

I'm with anyone who thinks we need to cut down on our turnovers. That's our greatest weakness. However, the free throw concerns are overrated. We finished with 42 paint points, 24 offensive rebounds, 24 2nd chance points, 61 total rebounds and 15 blocks. The Lakers would have been fortunate to have those kind of numbers when Shaq played for them. Did Shaq cost them games with his free throw shooting? I would gladly accept mediorce free throw shooting from our bigs, if they can dominate the paint like they did yesterday. Hell, UT is shooting 59% from the FT line (336th in the nation) and they're undefeated as well. "Rebounding win championships," to quote Pat Summit.

(Zia was 8 of 10 from the line, btw.)

Looks like UConn has another player in the transfer portal in sophomore Mir McLean. I honestly forgot she was still on the team.

The offensive foul under the basket against Rivers (or was it Hall?) was horrible.
