2021-2022 WBB Team

Thanks!

They started the season with 14. Had two transfer, four players out with injury. Two of their bench players, Gabriel and DeBerry, have a combined playing time of 15 minutes in 8 games
I saw some believe that Gabriel could be next. But I think we will see a lot more of Deberry. She much like Feagin has looked really good in limited minutes.

Geno has not seemed to handle this team well.
I don’t know if it is his age or the particular group of players he has or something else.

Gabriel is a local girl that was not in the top 100. I don’t know why she went to UCONN. It was clear it was about filling the roster with a hometown girl who would get only scraps of playing time over her career

I don’t think we see Bueckers the rest of the year. The other 3, Griffin, Muhl, and Fudd are dealing with stress injuries, either foot or ankle. Those don’t tend to heal without long term rest and rehab. I doubt they return on schedule

If Geno doesn’t adapt then I don’t think he will be coaching much longer. Top players used to be ok with riding the bench because they knew if they wanted to be on a national Championship team that was a possible price they would have to pay. Now UConn isn’t a guarantee to make it to the Final Four every year and top tier players are tired of not getting playing time when they know that can find it on another successful team.

Geno could quit right now and feel comfortable that he would be considered the GOAT for many years to come.

He’s a fantastic coach. I just don’t think he wants to change to fit the current landscape of college athletics. Not a knock on him just stating my opinion.
If he his becoming a misfit, better to do it near the end of one's career than at some earlier time, don't you think?

With all these back to back games with Top 10-15 teams, I'm wondering if they are getting tired? If they can make it to Christmas to get a breather...The conference games start right after Christmas, so there's no rest for the weary....
We’ve been well spaced schedule wise. Oregon and UConn back to back. Then Elon and NC A&T which were breathers as was K State.

Then 10 days til Maryland. Now Duke with 2 days prep, which is normal turnaround. Six days til Stanford and then 9 til Mizzou. Our SOS is top 5 BUT It was a masterful scheduling job rest wise.

Conference will be a bit of a grind as we lose one of our 2 open dates to play UConn again. However the UConn game is the middle of a cellar dwellers Vandy UF sandwich

That may happen in Columbia as well. Of course, I hope not.

I've stated before, and I'll continue to state it. I prefer scheduling as in the days gone by, with a few conference games in December, and a few non-conference ones in January/February. For example, the games (both genders) with Clemron ought to happen say in late January when more people notice then instead of buying them early in the season.

Top 5 SOS? I thought we were #1....
Here is a link to RPI With SOS embedded.
We are #1 in RPI and NET(which is NCAA’s metric of choice) last week we were #4 in SOS But with UMD game moved up to #2

I know you want that but those days are gone. Conference is what decides tourney. Nobody wants to play those games with untested team. For better or worse schedule is setup.

Some updated defensive stats

Blocks #1 9.2
Rebound margin #2 18.8
Points allowed #12 50.6
Def fg%. #9 32%
Def 3pt% #50 25%
Scoring margin #12 23.8

TURNOVERS 16.1 #150

Both NCSU & UMD Are averaging 81 ppg we allowed 57 & 59
Duke averages 80 ppg

I thought coach got exactly what she wanted yesterday: her team had to face some adversity. In her post-game interview, the first thing she mentioned was winning despite missing her 1st and 2nd string point guards.

The combination of Amihere & Beal did a great job against a very good point guard in Owusu. Beal shot 2-11 from the field and she still had a great game because missed shots are not necessarily a bad thing when your team is rebounding 51% of their misses. Beal had 10 rebounds of her own.

Just a gut feeling: Henderson plays yesterday if the matchup was different. Owusu is a physical load and Dawn didn't want Henderson or Zia on her. I suspect Destanni plays against Duke. But I also think coach and the whole team REALLY want to beat Stanford, so maybe she keeps her out another game. Also, I think the plan was to have Lele ready for the Stanford game. Obviously she's not going to play 25 minutes; just 10 minutes would be significant.

I watched a couple of Duke games. Solid team. They are going to be pumped Wednesday. When you're the #1 team, you should expect everyone's best. I like the matchup on paper, mainly because their best player, Celeste Taylor, is going to see a whole lotta Brea Beal on her. Taylor's going to need help from some other players, and Duke does have several players who can hit from the perimeter.

They have a solid big in Jade Williams. Duke really can't afford for her to get in foul trouble. We are going to score a lot of paint points even when she's in the game.

I think we'll continue to see more Saniya Rivers against Duke. She's struggling to make any shots (again, not the worst thing on this team, as long as she can limit her turnovers), but her defense is outstanding. She did a nice job whether matched up against Bibby or Benzan yesterday. We finally have another long wing defender to compliment Brea. Dawn clearly has a lot of confidence in Rivers, playing 25 minutes yesterday instead a veteran guard, Littleton.
As Dawn always says, "You cut off the head". She did that with Owusu yesterday and she'll do it at Duke. I'm glad we had a tough game yesterday so we don't get complacent.

I think he has turned into one of our biggest recruiting assets. His style, his criticisms of his players. Not playing good players so they can develop. He is talking himself right out of the game

Transfers aren't always bad. We had a blue chip player transfer before the 2020 season and that worked out well for us.

We know Geno will use the scholarship of the player who transferred out to bring in another 5 star recruit or an all-conference transfer from another school.

He must not have thought much of this player at all, if she couldn't get in games with the current state of their roster. She took the hint.

That, and he already has a number 1 class coming in for next year.

We have had 4 transfers in the last 5 years.

5 years ago Araion Bradshaw and Haley Troup left to go to Dayton and Mizzou. Bradshaw has been a 4 year starter; 3 time conference all D 1st team, DPOY once, best assists to TO ratio in program history

Troup 3 year starter and averaging 9ppg this year and last

3 Years ago Ladhazia Williams, Mizzou and Bianca Jackson, FSU left.

Jackson led FSU in scoring and assists last season and is their leading scorer this year.

Williams started and averaged 12 ppg last season. PT has been limited due to injury this season.

All got PT here, but saw the hand writing on the wall. They have all been successful, had conversations with DS before leaving and didn’t leave in the middle of the year.

In the same amount of time UCONN has had 10 players transfer out with half of them doing so in mid season. That’s 2 a year. I was shocked by the number. Indicates something is wrong with either recruiting, player development, or coach player relationships.

We will see one of them tomorrow night, Lexi Gordon.

Sounds like they left on good terms.

If I had to guess, I'd say she doesn't play until Stanford.

After watching a couple of Duke games, I think coach might like Amihere's length on the perimeter. Duke shoots a lot of 3's and they can hit them. I expect to see more of Saniya Rivers as well. The goal will be to drive them off the 3 point line and into the lane.

Duke is 336th in the nation in free throw attempts. They just don't drive to the rim very much at all. I guess that's good, if you're playing South Carolina.

On defense, in the games I watched, they played man-to-man almost exclusively. However, most teams play zone against us. We'll see tomorrow.

Our championship team featured two transfer starters……

Paige Bueckers had surgery yesterday. She's out 8 weeks.
I still don't know how likely she will be ready by them. If she's able to play, I think it will be Midway through March at best. Especially considering her history of injury, she could benefit from taking the year off and come back full healthy next season.
