Baseball vs. Charlotte Live Thread

It won't make anyone feel better about McGillis but about 30 seconds after checking into the game, Stone just made one of the catches of the season. He slammed into the fence in right field on the run while holding on for an out after a long flyball that looked like it might've been a homer off the bat.

Proctor takes advantage of the help to fire a 1-2-3 inning on 10 pitches, sending this to the stretch at 7-5.

These last 2 Charlotte pitchers have an average ERA of 6.65. This is not outstanding pitching and we are making them look like All-Americans. The bats have died over the last few weeks and they need to come alive or we will not make post season play.

There's a break. Ethan Petry stings one to left -- almost the same spot as his warning track flyout earlier -- but this one bounces in and out of the glove of Charlotte's left fielder.

Lead-off double.

Yep, I think it’s best if we hold McGillis out until next season when he is fully recovered. Stone is solid.

Not sure why that was scored a hit

There's the big swing South Carolina has been waiting for since the 1st inning. Talmadge LeCroy with an outstanding at-bat after going down 0-2, foulling off three pitches, taking a ball, fouling off another then crushign a two-run home run way, way out to left field.

7-7 game in the 7th. Back where we started.

Braswell singles into right-center, that's three hits for the last four batters and Charlotte is going to its bullpen again.

Aubrey Gillentine is the new pitcher.

Tippett rolls into a fielder's choice, then is thrown out trying to steal on a 2-0 pitch. Not really sure why you'd put the steal on there when, at worst, even an out by Stone would've cleared the nine-spot and guaranteed the top of the order would start the 8th.

It was close, and Kingston challenged it, but ultimately the call on the field stood.

7-7 after seven. Nick Proctor is still pitching.

Tippet’s fingers were on the bag before the tag. Poor review there. Takes away a potential run. Hopefully we can keep the 49ers off the bases!

Proctor strikes out the first batter and is being taken down -- again a move that I have to assume is directly tied into the weekend.

Chris Veach is in the game. Alrighty then.

Veach gives up an infield single and gets a pop-up in foul territory before issuing a four-pitch walk, although two of those were check swings on changeups that Founders Park really wanted.

Two on and two out for Cunningham in a big spot.

Veach airmails one to the screen to push the runners up a base each, then gives up a hot shot for a base hit to center.

9-7 Charlotte.

And now Stahlman rings a double into the corner that scores Cunningham, and some fans are heading for the exits now at 10-7.

Connor McCreery is your new pitcher trying to get the third out of the inning. Seventh Gamecock reliever of the night.

So we take out Proctor who has thrown the best all night for some unknown reason and bring in Veach who gives up 3 runs on 3 hits, a walk, and several few wild pitches. Pitching has been terrible. Unreal!

Let’s see Veach count to three on his fingers again. That 1-2-3 runs Veach.

McCreery walks both batters he faces and now it's Sam Simpson on to ptich.

Are we serious with this pitching?!?!?!? UT is going to slaughter us this weekend if we cannot perform better than this on the mound. This is jus inexcusable!!!

Simson ends the 27-minute half inning with a strikeout. Felt like about 27 hours, really.

11-7 Charlotte, going to the bottom of the 8th.

Evan Stone reaches base with a dropped third strike, then Dylan Brewer crushes a two-run homer out to right-center. No doubt about that one.

11-9, stil nobody out in the bottom of the 8th.

Messina walks with one out and Petry is the tying run. He's already hit two balls to the track tonight...

Petry cuts through a fastball for strike three, then um, a baserunning mistake.

Casas pops into shallow left, the ball falls between three fielders for a huge South Carolina break...then Messina is thrown out trying to score from first on the play.

11-9 after eight, and somehow that play feels like a fitting summary of the last three weeks for this team.

Lead-off shot off the wall in right should've been a double, but turns into a triple with a boot in right. Double + error gives Charlotte a chance to get one of those runs right back.

I do not know if there is another team in the country that makes more base running errors than we do. Down 2 runs with one a bat remaining, you need base runners. Not to mention there were 2 outs so Messina should have been running! I just do not understand it.

There's some good defense to make up for it.

Simpson gets a strikeout, then on a 1-2 pitch with one out Casas gloves a chopper, fires home and cuts down the runner at the plate on a 3-2 fielder's choice. Two down now.

From my vantage point in the press box it looked like a bad send by Wingo, for what it's worth.

(Still head-scratching and in a spot where the key runner was on second base, anyway)

Nice work by Sam Simpson to hold Charlotte off the scoreboard after the lead-off runner reached third base with nobody out.

To the bottom of the 9th, 11-9. LeCroy, Braswell, Tippett will hit.

And that's a wrap. Ugly midweek loss, 11-9 the final, but far more important matters are coming up starting Thursday. The point before this game remains the same as it is now:

Win the Tennessee series, you probably host a regional.

Wow, swept by Charlotte and three straight losses to this team. Limping into this weekend against a red hot UT team. Does not look good.

this team is crawling.

no reason to expect good things this weekend.

and even if they host, they are playing so poorly, they are unlikely to win.

typical for Mark Kingston teams.
