Double digit unemployment absolutely will happen. We will see a sharp decline in GDP over the next several months, and according to analysts, a sharp recover in the Q3 timeframe. The question is what sort of permanent damage is caused in the process.
Americans just need to hunker down and get through this. The next two weeks will be terrible according to Trump. Some won’t survive - both literally and figuratively.

Anything is possible, but if anything countries are becoming more isolated, don’t you think? Many say the European Union is about to split up.
Anything is possible at this point. I think we will know more by the middle of April. But it is clear that a 2 week partial shutdown isn't going to cut it. Not in SC and not anywhere else. A nationwide 4 week strict shelter in place is the only thing that will help at this point.
It is easier to revive a business than to revive the dead. Focus on beating the virus. We need to have a national lock down. People do travel from state-to-state.

Obviously there must be exceptions to a lock down, such as truckers delivering food. But vacationers, people going to their 2nd homes? ....Come on now. I don't know what Trump is waiting on.

A month long lock down, shelter in place, whatever you want to call it will bring it's own very difficult situations. At that point you'll have looters and some "purge" type scenarios. I obviously can't get in Trump's head, nor would I want to, but I think he's been hesitant to issue martial law for many reasons. One of which is because his voting base would call it what it is, and secondly, I think they were hoping people would really take this seriously and stop going out to public places. Unfortunately that hasn't happened. I don't know what the answer is, I do think closing non-essentials is a step in the right direction. I don't think martial law is- if it does get to that, we will see humanity's true colors come through.

Believe me, my stomach turns with every stock market pull back (market futures are down 300 points this morning). But we need to get this virus under control. If we have 100,000-250,000 dead, what businesses, other than funeral homes, won't suffer?

It's probably good for us in a way. We can learn what we can live without. So far we've learned we can live without sports, dining out, theaters, concerts, etc. A second Great Depression might not be the worst thing. The folks who came through the depression learned a lot and it gave them the fortitude to face tyranny head-on on in WWII. We would not have won WWII had it not been for the depression.

My concern is longer term. When your policy is to run trillion dollar deficits when times are good, and spend trillions more and willfully tank your GDP by 1/3 for a quarter or two when a new cold sweeps through, eventually you are going to run out of bullets. We are therefore making our descendants’ standard of living lower to save maybe a half-million people (1 out of 700) who will mostly be dead anyway by the time the chickens come home to roost. That may seem cold, but there is a trade off for everything, and I tend to err on the side of trying to leave the world a better place for the future even if that means a present sacrifice (whether more taxes, environment regulation, or in some cases even life itself). People seem to think the pro-economy folks are being selfish, but I see it from the opposite side. However, I remain willing to be convinced that the long term impacts are not as bad as I foresee by someone much smarter than me, but that is the framework by which I view all this.

You’re going to die sooner or later. Only question is how you live your life and what you leave behind. In any event, after this is over I will eagerly await the public outcry for more public expenditures that similarly benefit our society’s well being such as investments in education, healthcare, and environmental protection, and everyone’s willingness to pay more taxes to make that happen. I’m not sure why minimizing the impact of a new cold warrants stopping the world but other things that make our lives better do not warrant a greater investment of our resources.

I would say you can only go out for medicine, medical care, food, gas and work, but only if you are employed at a grocery store, pharmacy, gas station, as a first responder, law enforcement, or in medicine. Everyone else stays home and on their own property. $500 fine for first violation. Immediate escort home if you are stopped.
Only 1 person per car. 2 people if the passenger is being transported for medical care. You have to show proof of destination. (I.E., groceries or supplies in the car, written prescription or filled prescription, appointment paper for doctor, and proof that you are in law enforcement, employee of an essential business, medicine or a first responder.)
I would put a 30 day limit on it, but declare martial law and bring in the national guard to aid in enforcement.
