GAMECOCKS TODAY!
Friday, June 14

Good morning from Gamecock Central.

Father's Day is Sunday, and we have Gamecock Central gift subscriptions that range in length from one month to five years!

We're 78 days away from the Gamecocks playing North Carolina.

1. 7️⃣8️⃣ Countdown to kickoff: 78 days!

Our countdown to South Carolina's 2019 season opener against North Carolina in Charlotte is now down to just 78 days. Today’s athlete is a redshirt sophomore who has a new number — and new position — M.J. Webb.

Webb, formerly a defensive tackle, is an athletic player that moved to the offensive side of the ball where he may get more playing time. Webb, a former Rivals250 member measuring 6-foot-3, 293 pounds, has the athleticism to learn the new position. The third-year year player from Rutledge, Georgia, will compete with several others for two open spots on the interior of the Gamecock offensive line.

2. Gamecocks hosting another strong group of official visitors

For the third straight weekend, South Carolina will host a number of top prospects on its campus for official visits this weekend as the Gamecocks look to continue the recruiting momentum that brought five commitments last week. Here's a look at this week's expected official visitors.

Columbia (S.C.) Hammond four-star DT Alex Huntley - After locking in his commitment to the Gamecocks last week, the local standout will take his official visit to the program that he's already so familiar with. Huntley already had all of his questions about the program answered by the staff before he committed, but the official will still offer an opportunity for him to spend the weekend at his future home with his future teammates.

Conway (S.C.) three-star DT Tonka Hemingway - Could the in-state standout be closing in on a possible decision? After visiting North Carolina this past week, Hemingway will take his official visit to South Carolina this weekend, a place that he's been multiple times before. Hemingway doesn't say much, but the belief is that the Gamecocks are in good shape here.

Notasulga (Ala.) Reeltown three-star TE Eric Shaw - The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Shaw has seen his recruiting stock explode in recent months and he's a major target for the Gamecocks after also having a strong visit to Columbia for the spring game. Schools like Auburn, LSU, Tennessee and Texas A&M have been after Shaw hard too, but the Gamecocks will look to make their move this weekend.

Batesville (Miss.) South Panola three-star athlete Janari Dean - Dean initially received an offer from South Carolina as a running back, but the 6-foot, 180-pounder is now considering the possibility of playing safety at the next level. The Gamecocks just simply want him in their program and would offer the chance to play either position. Dean, who has a top five of South Carolina, Georgia, Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Tennessee, will make his decision on July 4.

Miami (Fla.) Columbus three-star DE Elijah Roberts - It's not uncommon for South Carolina to host surprise official visitors during the Will Muschamp era and Roberts qualifies as that. A likely Miami lean, Roberts isn't a player who we've been tracking much in the past, but the Gamecocks will look to make a move with him this weekend.

As always, GamecockCentral.com will have complete in-depth coverage of South Carolina's recruiting weekend.

4. This Date in Gamecock History

June 14, 1975 – Carolina ended its dominant 1975 season with its first-ever trip to the College World Series championship game, but fell short, losing to Texas 5-1.

  • The Gamecocks, 51-6-1 on the year, saw star pitcher Earl Bass take his first loss of the season after winning 17 straight.
  • Bass allowed just eight hits but some shaky defense and a home run by Texas' Mickey Reichenbach resulted in the defeat.
  • USC's lone run came on a solo homer by 1B Hank Small, his 19th of the year.
  • Carolina would scratch only four hits on the day off future White Sox started Rich Wortham.

5. Birthdays!

Jermale Kelly – He committed to South Carolina over Tennessee, Georgia and Notre Dame, but redshirted his first year in the program. He caught 43 passes in 1997, including 10 touchdowns, which earned him Freshman All-America honors from The Sporting News and SEC All-Freshman honors. Kelly would start the next three seasons, finishing his career with 153 receptions and 16 touchdowns. A captain in 2000, he was named second-team All-SEC that year. Kelly also was on the receiving end of the infamous "The Fade" pass from Erik Kimrey that season against Mississippi State, a game in which he had 123 receiving yards. He also had 107 yards and two touchdowns against Alabama that year.
