It actually is 3 hours from start to finish. The totality part is approx 2 minutes. Not really knocking it. I just think it is a bit silly to travel for something that will last a few minutes.

What if it's cloudy?
I have travelled for things that didn't last for nearly a "few minutes."Not really knocking it. I just think it is a bit silly to travel for something that will last a few minutes.
I don't think it will be THAT dark.Don't lose your ball in the darkness.
That would be like a consolation prize. You will still be able to notice the total darkness.
I hear ya.Not really knocking it. I just think it is a bit silly to travel for something that will last a few minutes.
He plays for LE but is playing against Camden. So I get to go back to my old stomping grounds. For Camden, NCentral, or LE?
GOCOCKS! BEATNCSTATE!
That would be like a consolation prize.
Unfortunately, the estimates are 500K-1 million. It seems there aren't very many major metropolitan areas that are on the true center path, but Columbia and Charleston are. According to some app my wife found, the center of the eclipse will go right down Longs Pond Road in Lexington. Lexington High School is supposedly one of the absolute best places to see this thing. Personally I wish it were happening somewhere else. I have not interest in 2 hours of darkness in the middle of a Monday afternoon...No damn way? Is that an accurate estimate? I thought I heard like 150k

Meh...they usually don't start until Rush Hour. Mother Nature has a sense of humor. The forecast is calling for heavy thunderstorms the entire afternoon
Well after all, it IS Columbia, S.C. and it is August.
Anyone else that lives near the 100 percent area thinking of just traveling to dome desolate part of the state and finding some country road or parking lot or something and setting up a little tailgate?? I many head down 521 South past Camden. I bet 77 may be a parking lot.
Most are doing it because parents want to be with their children for a once in a lifetime event. And I think most daycares are closing that day too.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Any owner of a business that caters to the public would be crazy to close that day.
ATL - did you hear that Beaufort County School District purchased eclipse glasses for ALL students? I think that is awesome, and they aren't even in the path of totality. They start on the 17th, but planned a "staff development day" for the 21st.I hear ya.
If I stay in Atlanta, I'll see 97%+ sun coverage. If I go to Columbia, I get to see total solar blockage for probably the only time in my life, and spend time with family and friends too. It's the spending time with family and friends that makes it worthwhile for us to go to Columbia.
Any excuse to party?
Didn't know that, Batgirl; that is cool. I know that the Beaufort County Library is hosting an eclipse lecture.ATL - did you hear that Beaufort County School District purchased eclipse glasses for ALL students? Batgirl. Don't want to be stuck in 4 hours of traffic going back north on 77. Any guesses on how that will be?
Take a looooooooooooong lunch.................It was said in jest.
I actually have to work that day...on Main Street. Want to guess how that will be?
It might be advisable to lower expectations.

I mean, it might be wise to at least develop an alternative definition of a satisfactory viewing experience.
If the BBQ isn't rancid, you'll salvage something.I'll be at a BBQ on Decker Blvd. I imagine that lunch will be served regardless of weather.
Can't imagine this group doing that.If the BBQ isn't rancid, you'll salvage something.
Then you are assured of one part of the day living up to expectations. Can't imagine this group doing that.
Then you are assured of one part of the day living up to expectations.
There's a difference between significant disappointment and total lack of fulfillment. This has the potential to be neither or either one. It's all about the weather.Wow. If I had a nickel for every time I worried about two minutes living up to expectations
This was a topic of conversation on Tony Kornheiser's podcast today. One of his companions, producers or whatever plans on jumping in the car & heading to Columbia from DC if that lends any perspective. Several on the show commented about their previous eclipse viewings, one of which included "there were more weirdos out for that than I can describe".thinking of coming down there
