There isn't a fire department anywhere that thinks they have enough money and resources- including right here in the midlands area of South Carolina - Lexington, Kershaw County, Newberry County- all counties mostly run by Republican politicians that have fire departments that have asked for more money and more equipment in the last 5 years.

As a white country boy, I've said before when I was working and hiring, I always went by the "F" word..... not "Favoritism" but "Fairness". I always tried to have a good mix because the most underrated characteristic of an effective and efficient operation is "chemistry among the workers". That's what I learned during my career. I don't believe I ever hired someone not "WELL-qualified". I went to pains to have a diverse workforce. I don't believe in DEI just for the sake of diversity. Does that make me a racist? As a white person, if you feel a company is going too far on diversity, boycott it. As a non-white person, if you feel a company is being unfair, boycott it. Businesses know money. If it's a government entity, all you can do is move out. When these governments start losing their tax base, they will shape up.

If one feels a business is being discriminatory, boycott the business. I don't like DEI. I did not like AA before it. I try to be fair in my outlook. I said before that I voted for Harris. But I did not vote for her because she is black (or an Indian or woman). We won't live forever. I think this stuff is crazy. I had a black woman employee who did not like me. Her predecessor who was a white guy did not like me either. I was tough to work for. But my neck was on the line. The job had to get done.
There’s only one way to hire for any position anywhere and it has zero to do with race or sex. Never has never will.
I don't disagree with your sentiment. I always tried to do what I thought was best for who was signing my paycheck. That approach worked out well for me in my career.

I think this is probably too complicated to talk about on a message board. But, I think it depends. You always want to hire qualified people. But that can be subjective.
Thank God my first boss hired me- and I wasn't really qualified for the job. He took a chance on me. I would bet a lot of people on here and a lot of others could say the same thing in their own lives- that someone took a chance on them when they might not have deserved it- and might not have been the most qualified.
(My dad spent years as a salesman. He had no sales experience when he got his first sales job- but a guy he went to church with took a chance on my dad when my dad had lost his job. My dad wasn't qualified for the job at all.).
I will say given he's passed away now, I thought my first boss had some racial prejudice based on some things he said. I also know he never hired a black person (or a woman). Did he talk about it? No. Did I know for sure? no. Did I suspect? Yes. Did some of my coworkers suspect? Yes. Did we talk about it at the time in secret? Yes, a few times but none of us knew for sure and we said that to each other. He was a pretty hard nosed and old school guy and he'd admit to that. He was a former military guy and he could be intimidating to people that didn't get to know him.
It's interesting, he always told me and my coworkers he got the supervisor job because he was ex-military. He also didn't really meet all the paper qualifications for the job, but he had a leg up given he was ex-military and in our job, we encountered a lot of ex-military people and they thought having a supervisor that could relate to them was a good idea. It made sense to me.
He told me years later when he was about to retire he hired me only because he thought my personality fit with the group and that he could teach me what I needed to know about the job. He also told me that I did awful on the interview with the job related questions he asked me- and I knew that anyway. I already knew some of the answers I gave him during the interview were awful- ignorant really- when it came to the job. I always laughed about it after I had the job because then I learned the job and knew how terrible that part of my interview went. I sure wasn't qualified for that job in a sense of something you could document on paper. My qualification, for him, was that he thought I was nice enough and willing to learn- so he hired me. At least that is what he told me.
This was also a government job. I wasn't qualified. Oh, I had the degree. But I had zero experience and met NOTHING of the experience requirement. I was lucky to get the interview and luckier to get the job.
So what is "well qualified?" How do you define it in a way that makes sense to a lot of different situations? What is "well qualified" to one person might be "not impressive" to someone else.
A friend of mine went back to school about 5 years ago to get his college degree. He didn't have one. He went back and got his 4 year degree and then immediately went ahead and got his Masters. He was lucky his wife had a good job and could carry him for awhile.
He has a passion for counseling and working with other people- even counseling adults. He hunted for a job after he got his graduate degree and was finally hired by a company that works with all sorts of people. My friend happens to be a black man. The place he went to work has no black men- and only one black woman that are considered counselors. But they are desperately wanted because they work with a lot of younger black men.
Despite what some on here think, a number of young black men would prefer to have the option to work with a therapist that is a black man- at least initially. Now, they don't want to work with someone that isn't qualified. But many of them, at least in this case, would like to have the option to work with a black counselor- again- at least for a portion of their counseling time.
Was this business wrong to try to hire my friend to fulfill a need they had in their business- a need they knew some customers wanted? They can't hire someone that isn't qualified. That's not allowed and wouldn't be considered. Did they overlook some more qualified, more experienced white male counselors because they would really prefer to hire at least one black male counselor so their young black clients would have the option to work with someone they feel looks a bit like them and might be able to relate to them better?
I am not smart enough to know all those answers. But I think I can understand why that might be important to some businesses- and some clients.

I think there are situations where a company would want to hire a specific sex or gender.
For example, a disability board that works almost exclusively with young females might want to hire mostly females, while working hard not to discriminate against males.
A barber shop that cuts hair whose clients are 99% black customers will likely want to hire qualified black barbers. That doesn't mean they will not hire a well qualified white barber that wants to work there, but my guess is they'd like to hire black barbers.
I would think your local "ole time" barber shop whose customer base is 99.9% white people would likely want to hire white barbers.
The all female private school might not want to hire a man as their lifeguard for their summer program.
There can often be a fine line in some of these things that's not always easy to explain.
I like DEI fine- but I'm talking about the DEI have experience with- not the caricature of it that I read on social media and from politicians.
About 40% of the DEI program at my former employer was focused on Veterans and disabled people. The most popular DEI group we had was our Veterans group. You didn't have to be a Veteran to join it- just someone interested in learning about the challenges veterans have and how to support them.
I greatly value our program. It's fun learning about people from different countries, different types of people, what challenges they face, and what is the best way to help them so we can achieve our business goals.
As I have mentioned before on here, I have a family member who is a trans female adult. She has been told 2x in the last several years not to apply at 2 different companies because they won't hire a trans person. She's a proud college graduate with an engineering degree and the sharpest person I know at high level math. But she fully understands, as I do, that there are a lot of people out there that will gladly discriminate against her openly, proudly, and aren't even interested in getting to know her at all- and that sentiment is increasing due to the current political climate and because some politicians have chosen to attack people like her.
Well, at this point, it's turned into an empty talking point- almost always made by late middle age or older white men.
I mean- calling an elected representative a "DEI HIRE" doesn't even make any sense.
People on social media that don't have a clue were attacking the LA Fire Chief as being unqualified because she is gay. She's been with the fire department for 25 years and served as a Firefighter, Paramedic, Engineer, Fire Inspector, Captain I, Captain II, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, Chief Deputy, then Chief.
She's risen through the ranks just like other chiefs before her- but somehow she's a " DEI chief" because she happens to be married to a woman.
Who gives a damn if she's gay or married to a woman? It has nothing to do with anything. The "Don't tread on me" crowd is ALWAYS the most likely to whine and complain and tread on everyone else.

I do not know the details of fire department issues in the city of Los Angeles and neither do you, or anyone else talking about them on cable news or talk show hosts.
I do know that a years long drought, coupled with 85 mph winds is something no one in South Carolina can relate to- nor can 95% of the country. It's not something that most anywhere on earth can handle.
We have about 3,000 wildfires almost every year in South Carolina that burn an average of 18,000 acres and no one here complains about it at all. The SC Forestry Commission says that wildfires are a growing concern in South Carolina and are increasing. No one says anyting about it.
The Forestry Commission says that our rate of wildfires is "among the highest in the United States." It also says there isn't even a uniform reporting system in place in South Carolina (which is needed but our Republican dominated legislature isn't interested) so they estimate there are actually even more wildfires that we don't know about that cause damage.
Yes- Republicans run South Carolina- so no one says a word about it.
I also know, you don't have a damn clue about any of this either even though you are 100% convinced you know who has committed crimes because they happen to have a D by their name on their political affiliation.

I've spent time reading some about California's actions related to underbrush and dried out vegetation- and they spend hundreds of millions of dollars in mitigation. But they also have a decades long drought and they also have had 85mph winds.
I can imagine folks like him would be holding public employees at gunpoint if they tried to get rid of dried out vegetation around a home.
You should know the details if you're keeping up at all as there plenty of them.

Growing up in the area, we feared fires far more than earthquakes.
LA has been well-aware of high Santa Ana winds forever and still places environmentalism over common sense.
There's been plenty of plans put forward over the years to limit the damage/burn and they reject them all.
The American Psycho, Gavin Newsom, is next level though with how he handled (or plotted) this one.
Newsom can't contain his excitement over the rebuilding project before the 2028 Olympics.
His ego very well could blow the lid off of this if it was another Progressive pre-planned disaster.
