Gamecock Central recruiting analyst Chris Clark is out of town this week. In his absence, we'll be posting some recruiting notes each day. The following recruiting notes were compiled by Jameson Million (and Austin Thompson). In addition, there's an article on the home page about Eric Mack and we'll have a story about Marcus Lattimore later.
Douglas (GA) offensive guard Garrett Scott should know Monday if he has an offer from South Carolina. He told us that he would have gotten that information earlier but Coach Wolford was at camp. Wolford is expected to call Scott Monday.
Manning (SC) cornerback John Fulton was in Columbia this weekend for a Gamecock basketball camp. He enjoyed the camp and got to talk with Shane Beamer and Stephon Gilmore a good bit during breaks. He also told us that the coaching staff talked to him about walking on as a basketball player at USC. He said he will be back next Monday for a visit to Columbia. His top five right now is Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and LSU.
As noted in the front page story, St. Matthews (SC) offensive guard Eric Mack was in Columbia for a camp Friday and got to work with Coach Wolford before making his way to Athens yesterday for a Georgia Camp. He has a good relationship with Coach Wolford and the camp only helped with that. Recent commit Brandon Golson also was a huge plus for him.
USC commitment Kelcy Quarles of Greenwood (SC) also attended the Gamecock camp. He told us that he went up against some good players and also spent some time with Coach Lawing, who later showed him around campus. He said that everytime he gets to see the weight room and stadium, he's impressed by how beautiful it is. He loved taking pictures with all the kids there at the camp. He also spent time in the weight room watching the workouts and talked with some of the players and strength and conditioning coach Craig Fitzgerald. Quarles also told us he spoke recently with Logan Stewart, who recently picked up a Gamecock offer. Quarles said Stewart will hopefully commit to South Carolina. In fact, Quarles is doing all he can to help recruit for South Carolina.
We spoke Sunday with Flowery Branch (GA) QB Connor Shaw, a USC commitment. He recently participated in a 7-on-7 camp in North Gwinnett, Ga., where his school beat Byrnes High School by one point on the first day. He didn't get to talk with Rebels' Marcus Lattimore and Nick Jones much but he did say that he told Marcus to 'Think Carolina' because he wanted to get the Gamecocks in his mind.
Speaking of Rebels... We spoke with Byrnes product Marcus Lattimore Sunday night and we will have a full story Monday. I can tell you that Lattimore said he thinks South Carolina will contend for the SEC Championship in 2009 and he has a lot of confidence in our coaches. I can't say enough how much USC's offer to Nick Jones impacted Lattimore.
Allendale (SC) Athlete Bashuad Breeland committed to Clemson this weekend. We will be working to see how firm his Tiger Commitment is.
Loganville (GA) offensive guard Morgan Bailey committed to Georgia Tech Sunday. We will be following up with Bailey to see if he still plans to visit Columbia on Tuesday, as planned.
Louisville (GA) cornerback Barry Bostic is also another Peach State prospect that has a solid (verbal) commitment to Georgia Tech. Some of you were asking about him earlier.
