The coaches evaluated both in practice. Statistically, she did better close up. The other kicker hit better from further away. She has played football for less than a month, and under game conditions quickly got off two accurate kicks with enough height. 2 for 2. And the pressure on the kid was intense. She knew how many of you were sitting there hoping she would fail and she knew she could have been the laughingstock of social media idiots if she failed. Very few, if any, of the keyboard warriors here could do that, even in their younger days. I agree that the squib kick in her first game was overblown, but she did what they asked her to do. The two PAT's. That's impressive and if you don't think so, you've never tried kicking (and off the tee doesn't count). Look, she never claimed to be an NCAA level kicker. She just stepped up when asked. If you can't admire that, you don't really understand sports.

There is zero chance, zero, that a girl who had never kicked a football came in and in a couple weeks outperformed an established college kicker.

Personally, I have never considered any kicker a football player. They are just kickers. They don't do anything else. This situation just furthers my point. She came in and kicked a ball a couple of times. Now in the old days when it was usually a position player that also kicked, those guys were football players. But when your only activity is to kick the ball though, that's hardly considered "playing the game".
