Solution to football playoff?

More complicated than you seem to think. What metrics account for different schedules and conferences for instance?
Oh idk we can start here for an example:

Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Strength of victory in all games.
Strength of schedule in all games
Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
Best net points in common games.
Best net points in all games.
Best net touchdowns in all games.

That's a lot of words for you to say, "I don't love college football."

Yes, those kinds of things work in the NFL where every team is in the same league and can just go by record. Would Clemson's record be the same if they played our schedule? Anyway, whatever is going to happen is going to happen. We won't have a say.

I disagree. Not divisions are equal in the nfl. Some are much easier than others. See the dallas cowboys. Again those metrics only decide order not who actually gets in.

Agreed that there is, generally speaking, more parity in a fixed professional league where schedules do not vary by much.

For the past several years prior to this concluding season, all teams in an NFL division played nearly identical schedules each season: they played each team in their own division twice, each team in another division in the same conference once, and each team in a division in the opposite conference once. The only difference is that "team A" would play one team from each of the other divisions in their conference who finished the same in their division standings as "Team A" did the previous season. 14 of 16 identical opponents provides lots of even comparisons.

March Madness has created a great parody in b-ball and the blue bloods aren’t what they once were. There are some incredible upsets each year. The upsets may not be as many, but there is no reason it couldn’t work in football.

Like mentioned already, a 16 team playoff with all P5 division winners and all G5 champs would be fantastic. Knowing every conference has a dog in the fight is a good thing. Recruiting would pick up for a lot of G5’s.
