That's not correct. That's just not realistic.
Talking with Putin is necessary (of course Lavrov is the only one talking so far) and Biden was a fool not to try to keep some type of communication with Russia regarding the war. However, it must be said that Putin, at the beginning, was certainly not interested in any discussions either.

Having totally one-sided talks with Ukraine and having Ukraine negotiate with itself- without knowing what Russia will do or is willing to do is also wrong. in Saudi Arabia, Russia made ZERO concessions and MADE zero assurances of anything. They offered nothing in return for a peace deal. Ukraine wasn't even invited.
If you were leading a negotiation between Carolina and Clemson to settle some major, life threatening dispute if Clemson had attacked our campus, it would be pretty damn stupid to expect South Carolina to make concessions - while excluding South Carolina reps in the discussions with Clemson- and getting NO guarantees at all from Clemson. if that happened, you'd be going absolutely ballistic.
That's what people are expecting Zelenskyy and Ukraine to do - stop fighting, and give up without any assurances 1)Russia would stop or abide by anything, 2) Give up anything at all to bring a peace. Why would you expect Ukraine to do that?
Even Brit Hume on Fox pointed out that Zelenskyy has zero reason to trust Russia - and that no matter what Russia says to Trump- they could very easily agree to a deal and immediately violate it knowing the Trump administration would not do anything to punish Russia for it. Even Brit pointed out that was a very real and legit concern on the part of Ukraine.
If Trump were serious about this right now, he'd send Marco Rubio to meet with Lavrov and find out what Russia is willing to offer for a peace deal. Russia won't say a lot, but he can get some minimal guarantees. What will they accept and what are they prepared to offer for a deal. That hasn't happened at all.
When Rubio met with them in Saudi Arabia, Russia offered nothing. They essentially got put on notice that the Trump administration was going to apply major pressure on Ukraine to give up minerals to the United States - and maybe Russia gets part of that deal too- and that Trump would pressure Zelenskyy to accept that.
With that, Lavrov and Russia made no guarantees that wouldn't still keep the war going or try to take over the entire country.
That's not a deal for Ukraine.
You don't walk into a car dealership and the salesman demand you pay full price and then give you no guarantee that the vehicle you are buying is even on the lot.

The best path forward is for Trump to apply the same type pressure on Russia that he has on Ukraine. He can do both at the same time.
God knows he doesn't want to do that to Putin. But it's necessary to some degree.
He won't criticize Putin but he can get them to offer some guarantees and put some mechanisms in place to assure there is a high price to pay if they violate those guarantees.

It was stupid not to have the Ukrainian ambassador in Saudi Arabia. She's well respected with Rubio (he's said so in the past) and having her there in the room, even if not sitting around the table, was a no-brainer and they screwed that part up. That was a diplomacy 101 thing they messed up.
It would have been a signal to Russia that Ukraine is a respected partner of the United States and that their concerns are legit.

What was said to Russia is public knowledge. Both sides said the same thing and have proven it with their actions since then. Rubio has talked about the talks extensively in numerous interviews.
It's not some secret- and Zelenskyy is their President. Of course he's going to know what was said. He's got to sign off on the deal for it to be put in place.

He's repeatedly said he is willing to cede territory. Earlier in the war, he ruled out ceding territory because he said- as most people understand, that Putin won't stop even if he ceded territory.
Zelenskyy has since- repeatedly said- he's willing to cede some territory for security guarantees that are meaningful and that the negotiation can't just be Ukraine giving up stuff without Russia also having to pay some price.
