She is extremely talented and I think will be a great player but the last several games she has a bad combination going on of having very little confidence but trying extremely hard to make the big play. I know that doesnt sound right but if you watch her, she is really wanting to make the big play but when she doesnt, she looks very dejected. If we are going to go far the remainder of the season, she has to get the confidence back and spell Sessions with some quality minutes, not ones with turnovers and out of control play. How is Dawn going to help her with this or how can she best get out of it? You have to shoot it to get confidence back but she is way off with her shots right now, even layups.

Good questions. I think B. Cuevas has come to the realization for the first time in her life she is not the best player on the floor. That can be a scary place, fear and uncertainty unnerve many athletes. It also makes you coachable(when the student is ready the teacher appears). I think B. can still produce this season but is not crunch time ready. Dawn will need to simultaneously build her up and rein her in. Dawn said at the start of the year if we are going to win EVERBODY will have to sacrifice a part of their personal game. Cuevas is in the midst of that tough lesson.

Cuevas' strength has been her fearlessness. Every great athlete has it but has to go hand in hand with understanding your system, role, and limitations. I expect to see that balance next year and believe she will be an all SEC performer.

I don't see a big problem. Coach Staley will instruct and use her when the situation fits. I think that the team pressure and coaching will be enough to keep her in the correct playing style and she will sit on the bench instead of playing if not.

Cuevas reminds me a lot of some of the students I have taught in the

past who had endured some tough things in their lives and who often felt they had to almost over-compensate in sports or some other area. Some of them who had no outlet ended up doing some not-so-good things.

They run on highs and lows. Nothing in-between. I used to joke about some of my students that they have only two speeds: on and off.

Not sure how to counter-act that except for the coaches to continue to model equanimity and have faith in her. Kids (yes, she's a kid) like Bianca thrive on praise, so Bianca will have to learn when the praise is not forthcoming, and that's where the faith comes in, that just because someone chastises her it's not the end of the world. And also that praise is temporary and must be refilled.

She is still so young. All of us "veterans" on here know that. We have also seen players like her for decades at USC, maybe not as skilled, but just as deprived of the balanced lives many of our children had/have.

Best thing that could have happened to Bianca was to come here to be under Coach Staley and Company's tutelage and to experience a faithful fanbase such as ours.

Well said, from a Mother and a teacher.

Someone needs to "mold" Cuevas into her dreams. Hope she has that someone.

Stop calling out players on a public message board. She is only a damn freshman .
Thank you; 18 years old and some pretty nifty games this season. Newsflash: freshmen are all inconsistent.

Enjoyed reading your post. Pulling for Bianca to have a successful life.

She needs to work on her fast breaks, with backboard use on shooting and seeing the whole court with her passing. She has great potential if she does the hard work. You can see her grimace when she makes a bad pass. She is not the only one that misses lay ups.

First off, Cockhorn and pepsicock, GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE!!!! No one in any way was jumping all over her or beating her down. READ THE POST!!!! I think she is a great player and is going to be a fantastic player. At no point did I say anything negative about Cuevas but simply pointed out that she was in a slump and was trying very hard to get out but struggling to do so. How can Dawn help her out because it is clear she wants to win (Cuevas) but is trying to hard and that is leading to mistakes. Please read the posts with open eyes before being the message board police and telling people what they are or are not doing. Geez, its people like you that get on my nerves on these boards. You make it where no one wants to post anything because you hide behind a computer screen and act like the keeper of the boards and act big and bad. Get off the high horse guys and chill out. We are all gamecock fans and want the best of our teams. Sometimes we ask questions that we want to know about and dont need you guys killing us for it.

Personally, I wish she would let Cuevas play a little SG and get Olivia Gaines in the game more.
Wouldn't be a bad idea. Would make her learn to adjust to game speed and not have to worry about pg duties. She's a decent shooter and her speed would help for defense and help get open looks, get atound picks and back doors.
