Fall Baseball Notebook Volume II (Story)

Hey y'all, hope your football bye week is going well. I went to the last two fall baseball scrimmages last week and went over some notes from it on pitchers, transfers, positions and more. This time, it was different (story)

Hey y’all hope your Sundays are going well. I’m sure they are! From the press box in Lexington last night. I wrote about it was all different. A different week of practice, a different start to the game, a different result and a different scene.

Olympic Sports Update 10/7-10/9

Women's Soccer

Record now stands at 9-2-3 and 4-2 in the SEC.

FROM USC:

COLUMBIA, SC – South Carolina women’s soccer added their second shutout of the week, taking down Kentucky 1-0 on Sunday. The win marked the fourth in conference play and the ninth overall for the season.

BREAKING DOWN THE ACTION

The Gamecocks’ offense started off hot, putting up six shots in the first 15 minutes of play. South Carolina’s defense also put in work, holding the Wildcats to just one shot with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half.

After a save by senior goalkeeper Heather Hinz, both teams headed into the locker room tied at 0-0 with South Carolina tallying a 9-1 shot advantage.

Five minutes into the second period, Corinna Zullo got the first chance up for the Gamecocks, coming off just wide to the right. Junior Catherine Barry then put down three more shots and connected on a fourth off a pass from Payton Patrick in the 55th minute of play to put South Carolina on the board 1-0.

Barry’s goal marked the fifth of the season and 19th of her career, tying for the No. 8 spot overall in the record books tying with Angela Austin (1996-99) and Debbie Smith (1995-96). Barry currently leads the team in overall goals (5), points (12), and shots (60). The junior also leads the conference in shots per game.

Jyllissa Harris also put her name into the record books, taking over the No. 1 spot for career starts at 95. Harris also moved to No. 3 overall for games played (97), placing her at No. 5 in the nation.

The Gamecocks finished the day with a 16-4 shot advantage, and took 10 corners.

South Carolina will hit the road to take on Vanderbilt on Friday, Oct. 14 at 8:00 p.m.

Men's Soccer

FROM USC:

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team dropped its Sun Belt Conference match to 6th ranked Marshall 3-1 Saturday night (Oct. 8). The Gamecocks are now 5-4-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in the Sun Belt.

Marshall held a 7-4 shot advantage and led 4-2 in shots on goal.

The Thundering Herd opened the scoring with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half, scoring after the ball deflected off a Gamecock defender to a Marshall player at the top of the 18-yard box. The Herd added goals in the 69th and 79th minutes.

Harrison Myring nearly tied the match in the 53rd minute when he beat a defender to put a shot just inside the near post that the Marshall keeper had to make a diving save on.

Rocky Perez scored his first collegiate goal in the 88th minute. Perez stole to ball deep in the Marshall zone. He made darted around multiple defenders before striking the ball from just outside the 18-yard box into the lower left 90.


South Carolina returns to action at Coastal Carolina on Friday, October 14 at 7 p.m.

Volleyball:

The Volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Tennessee over the weekend in Knoxville. Carolina is 9-8 overall and 3-4 in the SEC.
