Women's Soccer Update

Carolina improves to 8-2-3 and 3-2 in the SEC.

FROM USC:

STARKVILLE, MS
– The Gamecocks tallied a win on the road and their third victory in conference play after taking down Mississippi State 1-0 on Thursday.

The first half got started with a bang as 5th year Claire Griffiths got one into the back of the net nearly 20 yards back off an assist from Payton Patrick to put the Gamecocks up 1-0; only six minutes into the game. The goal marked the second of the season for Griffiths, and the fifth of her career.

In the remaining 34 minutes of the first half, South Carolina and Missouri State put up three shots each, with the Gamecocks tallying two on goal.

More than 20 minutes into the second half, Mississippi State notched the first shot of the period to the bottom of the net, but were met by a save from senior goalkeeper Heather Hinz, the second save of the evening on either side. The Bulldogs would attempt for a second time in the 73rd minute but came up unsuccessful.

Mississippi State out-shot the Gamecocks in the final 45, but South Carolina was able to stay on top and secure the 1-0 victory. The Gamecocks finished the night with three shots (two on goal) and two corners. Hinz tallied one save.

Depth, defensive rotations and fighting through 'bumps and bruises' (Story)

Wrote a little bit about how South Carolina is getting healthy, but also how the coaching staff is trying to mix guys in who are working back from injury. Hope everyone's week is going well and those of y'all who are going to Lexington can travel safely.

Jordan Butler Announcement Time

Just a heads up that Jordan Butler will announce his decision tomorrow at 3:30 pm EST on his Instagram (which you can find here).

I put in a futurecast for him to South Carolina last Friday, and I'm not changing it prior to the announcement. The only other school some of the national folks are talking about to me is Mizzou, and perhaps they got in with a late push, but I will be surprised if that's the case. We'll have more on this one tomorrow afternoon.

Bennett will commit on Oct. 16th. Final 8 consists of Alabama, FSU, UNC, Tenn, FSU, UGA, Oregon, and South Carolina.

.....and I just put in a futurecast back on 9/23 for Bennett to the Gamecocks, if you enjoy keeping up with things like that. FWIW, he did recently visit Tennessee and I'll do my due diligence to make sure they didn't change his thinking from the last time Gamecock Scoop spoke with him.
