Olympic Sports Update 9/30-10/2

Volleyball: Carolina beat Missouri twice over the weekend. Earning wins on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's match went 5 sets before the Gamecocks held on for a 3-2 win. The write-up below is from Sunday's wins.

FROM USC:

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina limited its errors and benefitted with a three-set sweep of Missouri (7-7, 0-4 SEC) on Sunday, the team’s first sweep since Sept. 10. The Gamecocks (9-6, 3-2 SEC) improve to 8-1 this season at home and will finally have a chance to rest after finishing a flurry of five conference matches in just eight days.

UP NEXT
The team will head back on the road for a weekend series at Tennessee next Saturday and Sunday. The Volunteers were on a bye this past weekend and have a mid-week game at home against Florida on Wednesday before hosting South Carolina. Tennessee is 8-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play, with wins over Missouri and Texas A&M.

Women's Soccer: Carolina fell to #20 Arkansas at home 0-1. The Gamecocks dropped to 7-2-3 overall and 2-2 in the SEC.

Men's Soccer:

FROM USC:

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Playing in heavy rain from the remnants of Hurricane Ian, the South Carolina men’s soccer team and West Virginia played to a scoreless draw Saturday afternoon (Oct. 1). The Gamecocks now stand at 5-3-2 on the year and 1-0-1 in the Sun Belt.

Carolina earned its third clean sheet of the season as Ben Alexander earned two saves and Tristan Himes earned another.

As the rain began to fall just before kickoff, the two sides were limited in the attacking quarter. The Gamecocks finished the first half with three shots, while the Mountaineers had two. The lone shot on goal of the half came when Laurits Lillemose launched one from about 30 yards out with under 10 seconds to play.

It took WVU over 10 minutes to put a shot on goal in the second half. Alexander made a diving save in the 78th minute to keep the clean sheet alive, recovering after hitting the ground attempting to make the initial stop.

The Gamecocks were limited to two shots in the second half, but looked to have one final chance in the final 15 seconds on a breakaway before the Mountaineers were able to knock the ball away.

West Virginia finished with an 11-5 shot advantage.

South Carolina returns home to Stone Stadium Saturday, October 8, when it hosts No. 3 Marshall at 7 p.m.

How FCS Life Shaped South Carolina's Staff (Feature Story)

Hey y'all, hope you're doing well. I wrote a feature this week talking about Pete Lembo, Greg Adkins and Jimmy Lindsey about how coaching at the FCS level can form coaches early in their careers and what they learned. Fun to report and fun to write. Hope everyone's weekend went well.

My 2 cents on remaining schedule

1st off I'm a realist, as much as I love the Gamecocks I haven't seen much this year that makes me believe webare a top 25 team. I believe it will be very hard to finish above .500 and make a bowl game. Here's my break breakdown for remaining games.

Kentucky (away) - Very tough. I know everyone says it's Kentucky. They are ahead of us. 30% chance to win (loss 3-3)

Texas A&M (home) - Very tough. We have never beat these guys. They are miles ahead of us on talent. Sometimes under achieve, buy not against us. 15% chance to win (loss 3-4)

Missouri (home) - Should be a win. They are trash. 85% chance to win (win 4-4)

Vanderbilt (away) - Again easy win. They are Vanderbilt. 77% chance to win (win 5-4)

Florida (away) - For me this will be our last chance to make .500 and a bowl. Game will be tight. Beamer will throw everything trick in the book at them. Plus their QB is trash. 50% chance to win (This is a coin toss for me. Win 6-4) bowl bound

Tennessee (home) - This team is a overachiever. I believe we are not far apart (in talent, but their coaching staff is definitely better. Offensive play calling is great. We will keep it close for a half and they will pull away at the end 10 plus points. 45% chance to win (loss 6-5)

Clemsux (away) - I would love to say this is the year with break the losing streak, but they are just too talented. Their offensive output will keep game close for 3 quarters. 37% chance to win. (loss 6-6)

Bowl game - Hopefully favorable match-up. 55% chance to win (win 7-6 again) Finish with top 15 recruiting class.
