Braves 🆚 Rays 7/18/21 Southpaw Soirée redux 😎😎

Welcome to another edition of Gamecock Central Braves Baseball ⚾️ Chat 💬. I am your host @Pfunk Cock along with a plethora of regular participants in the chat. I slept well last night. A 9-0 whitewashing of a very good team will do that for a brother. 😎 The Mets lost and The Braves gained a game in the standings. Nowadays you also have to count your blessings when players don’t get hurt as the league wide carnage continues. Unfortunately for the Mets they had 2 significant episodes yesterday as DeGrom was announced to be experiencing some arm tightness so they are skipping his Monday start. The story stated they did not consider it to be serious he puts a ton of torque on his arm even though he has a classic delivery. I for one don’t want to see the best pitcher in the league sidelined at all. I am still heartbroken over the Marlins losing Fernandez in that boating accident. The Mets more significant injury was to Francisco Lindor as he as a grade two strain of his oblique muscle and that may sideline him Most of August because it affects throwing and hitting . On a brighter note they got Davis back from the IL and he promptly hit 2 Two run homers.

In other division news The Phillies and Marlins were suspended in extra innings after a sudden drenching and will continue their game today before playing their finale.
The Nationals were being bombarded 8-4 when their game was suspended due to gunfire . Someone reported deaths but that was not true as it was noted that their were non life threatening injuries. No mention of when game will be completed.

This is the rubber game of the series as the Rays had a big comeback win on Friday in extra innings before the Braves countered with last nights blowout win. We will have another Southpaw Soirée today as Drew Smyly will pitch for the Braves against Rich Hill of the Rays. Hill used to pitch for the Dodgers and he has historically given the. Raves fits. He is a crafty lefty and a strikeout pitcher with an assortment of breaking balls and a decent heater. Both pitchers have had trouble keeping the ball in the park this season so it may depend on whether conditions , wind direction and humidity. The pitcher who keeps the ball on the ground and inside the fences will probably have the upper hand today. Let’s hope we have the reformed Smyly who has done a much better job of throwing strikes and limiting home runs. Hopefully the magic continues. He will be throwing to mew Braves catching acquisition Stephen Vogt. He is a right hand throwing left hand batting catcher. He is known for having a good throwing arm and is pretty effective defensively. He will have his hands filled as Smyly tends to bounce a few pitches .

WBB: Barker announces Finalists

Janiah Barker, the highest-ranked uncommitted prospect in the 2022 class, announced her top five Sunday.

In an Instagram post, Barker listed her top five as South Carolina, Ole Miss, Georgia, Louisville, and Duke.

Barker is a 6-2 forward from Florida and the second-ranked prospect in the class. Barker had been remarkably tight-lipped during the recruiting process. That made her something of a mythic figure among fans since almost everyone believed they still had a shot at her.

Barker has the size of a forward and skills of a guard. In a scouting report on ESPN, Barker is described as:
“Athletic perimeter threat with college-ready frame cleans the glass, handles coast-to-coast in transition game; manufactures, delivers off the bounce in mid-range game to the arc; versatile in the front court, rises over the defender and finishes plays in traffic.”

South Carolina technically has four scholarships available for 2022. But with four seniors with extra eligibility and the need to have an open spot for transfers, South Carolina is unlikely to fill all four spots.

Wbb thoughts re: 2022 recruits

A. Watkins & J. Barker would be a perfect fit for the Lady gamecocks going forward.

the 2022 season has Boston & Amihere as seniors. I doubt that either comes back for an extra year!
Cordosa will be a jr. while Feagan will be a sophomore. If both Watkins & Barker do join the gamecocks, the foursome will be awesome!
The timing will be spot-on
Am I excited? You know it. Yes

For me, it has to be Meat. He came in as a 5* and the number 1 RB in the nation (ahead of Reggie Bush).

Florida fans...

So I'm sitting at the bar at my local golf course way out here in NW Montana and there's a guy with a Florida cap on (I hate that orange and blue) twanging away in perfect North Florida drawl. He's going on about Florida football and talking to a woman who went to a Florida game once. She didn't know which game it was. She probably didn't care because she was not raised on college football like we were. Anyway, the guy says "there are games, and then there are GAMES" and rattles off the GAMES - LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia. I piped up and said, yeah and there's South Carolina. He scoffed and I wished I had my 9-iron in my hand. Then he goes on to belittle our program by saying Spurrier was the winningest coach in our history AND adding in "and he only worked at it part-time." What a d!ck. I was a little pissed and not yet drunk enough to come back with something good. Fortunately his buddy came over and they went to another table.

Oh yeah, there was some discussion about how great Tebow is going to be at Tight End for the Jags. I couldn't keep from laughing.

OT- SC native & CofC grad missing in AZ
