SEC WBB Chaos in gator land

Head Coach Cam Newbauer has resigned for “Personal Reasons” after recently signing a nice 💲three year extension. To top it off all SEC star player Lavender Briggs has entered the dreaded transfer portal.
Not even looking for a permanent head coach but named an interim coach for the upcoming season...... like that ever works

Braves 🆚 Rays 7/17/21 Southpaw Soirée 😎

Welcome to another edition of Gamecock Central Braves Baseball ⚾️ Chat 💬 . I am your host @Pfunk Cock along with a plethora of regular participants in the chat.

The offense was not the problem yesterday but again the damn bullpen cannot get 3 outs without allowing in runs. That is at least 5 games Martin has blown recently. Minter hasn’t had a clean inning in awhile either. I have more faith in Chavez, Jackson and Santana to be honest. Matzek seems to have been affected by the rule changes as he could not throw a strike in his pre allstar game blow up. If the season is to make a turn around the bullpen will need to have assignments restructured.

The Braves made another trade for a catcher to solidify the position until D’Arnaud returns. The team traded for Vogt from the Diamondbacks for an obscure minor league first baseman that I have never even heard of. He will replace Lucroy on tue 26 man roster.

The Southpaw Soirée is on tap tonight as Max Fried will oppose Josh Fleming of the Rays. Fried is more of a strikeout pitcher whereas Fleming seems to pitch to more contact outs. I have no more insights to him because I rarely watch American League Baseball but I expect he is very well coached as the Rays are a quality ball club.

There has been a reshuffle of the lineup as Swanson replaced Freeman in the second spot and everyone else moved down a slot. I have been expecting Freeman to move out of the two spot because Acuna is no longer leading off. Swanson is swinging the bat better now and it gives him more protection to see better pitches. Joc Pederson will get his first start for the Braves and leadoff.

OT national league fans get ITT....what is up?

the national fans are no doubt disturbed & ashamed of the whole shooting incident....not the fault of the nationals. all hope goes out to them the fans etc. really sucks
my team the dodgers won while the giants lost, leaving the blue a game back. all seems fine....well not really....betts goes four for four at the plate but leaves the game with a hip irritation whatever that turns out to be. in addition to the not really the dodgers now have a two man pitching rotation. somehow i do not think that is going to cut it. so, nice having a good record. the offense is shaping up, maybe but what was a strength....starting pitchers is now a scene of devastation. damn bauer.......injuries are tough enough.....dodgers trending down imho despite current record
what say you other national league teams? once the three west teams begin beating each other up, some team in one of the other divisions might find themselves contending for a wild card spot

Very confused by this Beamer photo

i

This comes from this ESPN article: https://www.espn.com/college-footba...130-fbs-college-football-head-coaches-players

Like, why are there 2 scrums? Is this a brawl? Did Beamer totally tackle the wrong guy? Is he just taking out the closest Clemson player he sees?

Also, one could argue that a long snapper and special teamer had a bigger impact than a guy with 7 career receptions.

Baseball notes after two assistant departures

--We were able to confirm earlier today South Carolina was set to lose both on-field assistants in recruiting coordinator Trip Couch and pitching coach Skylar Meade with Couch going out to Arizona to join Chip Hale's staff out in Tucson and Meade becoming the next head coach at Troy. With Couch, he has a very close relationship with Hale having spent all of his coaching life in professional baseball. Hale was an assistant coach for the Diamondbacks from 2007-09, the same time Couch was with the organization as a scout. It seems like a no-brainer for Meade, who gets a chance to run a program, something he's had goals of doing before. He had some interest last year before the 2021 season but opted to stay at South Carolina and there was buzz during the season Meade could be someone who could get head coaching attention during this carousel (he obviously did). Meade's hire has already been confirmed by Troy and wouldn't be shocked to see Couch's hire out there as well from Arizona's side as well.

--South Carolina's players found out officially early Wednesday morning before the news started to trickle out and now leaves the Gamecocks without any on-field assistants (and recruiters) outside of head coach Mark Kingston. Because of that, Kingston is going to operate quickly in terms of filling out the rest of his staff. Tournaments and on-campus recruiting is going on right now and South Carolina needs a full staff on the road recruiting and visiting with prospects. So I don't expect the process to linger too, too long and the staff to be rounded out. Plus, hires need to be in place soon first off for recruiting but to be able to introduce themselves to the current team and talk to current commitments about staying in specific classes and then keeping some of the guys on the current roster who could sign professionally (i.e. Julian Bosnic).

--Speaking of recruiting, I'm still working on if there will be any kind of fallout from the departures. The guys in the 2021 class found out before the news came out. I did speak with one signee, Thad Ector, who did say he was still 100 percent coming to South Carolina. Hoping to have some more on that as the week goes on from a recruiting standpoint. Losing Meade is a big blow to not only the Gamecocks' pitching staff, which was completely revamped under Meade, but on the recruiting trail. Meade was arguably South Carolina's best recruiter and played a big part in landing a lot of the key pieces in South Carolina's 2021 class and over other classes. Losing his force on the recruiting trail will be something the Gamecocks will need to overcome with their next hire.

--I know everyone wants names, and I'm still doing some digging on some names with serious traction. What I can say is former Gamecock and current North Greenville coach Landon Powell does have some interest in the open position. It still remains if he'll get the job or if he's someone who will get serious traction, but I believe Powell would be open to the move to come back to Columbia. Powell is currently the head coach at NGU, having turned that program into a perennial powerhouse in Division II. In seven seasons he's 246-95-1 (128-44 in conference) with four league titles, including in 2021 when the Crusaders went 34-13 overall and 23-9 in the league. They were beat in the Southeast Regional, going 1-2 with losses to Wingate and Columbus State and a win over Catawba College. Powell was obviously a South Carolina player and part of three College World Series teams from 2002-04.

Time will tell if he has any serious traction, and I'll see about getting more names including more from the pitching coach side of things.

WBB: Cooper’s Finalists

East Clarendon guard Talaysia Cooper celebrated her birthday Saturday by announcing her seven finalists.

Cooper’s seven finalists are South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Florida State, Tennessee, Duke, and Ole Miss.

Cooper is the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year in South Carolina. In the 2022 class she is ranked 18th overall by ESPN and is the fifth-ranked point guard.

Cooper has long been on the Gamecocks’ radar, ever since leading East Clarendon to the Class A lower state finals as a seventh-grader. At 6-0, Cooper is big for a point guard, and she is a do-everything player for East Clarendon, even playing in the post to take advantage of her size. Although listed as a point guard she would probably be a two guard for the Gamecocks. Cooper averaged 23.7 points, 12.8 rebounds, eight assists, 3.4 steals and 4.6 blocks per game last season.

Cooper is one of two in-state players the Gamecocks are still recruiting for 2022, along with Cardinal Newman’s Ashlyn Watkins, the 12th-ranked player. There are also rumors the Gamecocks could still have a shot at Janiah Barker, the second-ranked player who has been completely silent about her recruiting.

OT: Odd Sports Rabbit Hole

Watched a hockey documentary called Red Penguins about Michael J. Fox, Mario Lemieux and others trying to revive the Russian national hockey team after the fall of the USSR. Doc ended with a song by a band called Gogol Bordello fronted by a NYC-based Ukrainian immigrant. Song is called Start Wearing Purple. Genre is gypsy punk, or polka punk as I think of it. Catchy as hell. Turns out it was adopted by James Madison University years ago as an unofficial fight song. Fun watching the evolution of this obscure, weird song.

Man Bentley left us Stacked at the Position Groups he Touched

Listening to Wes and Chris's last podcast yesterday I was thinking damn Bentley left us with a lot of good players at tight end (and tailback too with Harris and he left Fenwick in the stable too and that was from years ago). Went and got Muse from D2 and the kid is going to the NFL. Props to Kimrey for EJ but there's a lot of other good players (and just sick high upside athletes) in that room. Would love to see him back one day.

Beamer has brought life back into this program!

Between Spurrier walking out mid season and Muschamp coaching us back to the bottom of the SEC this program was lifeless. With the exception of a few great recruits like Pickens, Burch, and Lloyd there hasn't much excitement around here in over 6 years. This has all changed with the Beamer hire! There is life again in Gamecock football and these last couple of weeks of recruits on campus have solidified that to me. The constant positive feedback that has come not just from recruits, but HS coaches and current players as well has me excited about football again. The future is bright thanks to Coach Shane Beamer!

University History

Final Report - Executive Summary

July 16, 2021
The Presidential Commission on University History received a charge to study and better understand the complex history of the University of South Carolina, including the contributions of marginalized and underrepresented people and/or groups whose voices have typically not been heard.
This was to include an examination not only of the historic context of campus buildings’ names, but also of the lives of those who had buildings named after them, including their impact on the university, the state and the community around them. The effort would include a specific analysis of individuals and buildings and a broad acknowledgement of key groups and individuals that have contributed to the university over time.
The Commission members unanimously approved the final report and recommendations of the subcommittees on July 16, 2021.

Research and Methodology

The research assistant for the commission organized and compiled sources for a University of South Carolina history website, created a list of notable historical figures for naming and renaming opportunities, created a short, informative list of every named building and monument on the Columbia campus and wrote detailed reports of the 13 building or monument namesakes the Names on the Landscape subcommittee chose to review. The Board of Trustees accepted the commission's 2020 recommendation to rename Sims College.

University History Subcommittee

The University History Subcommittee conducted research on archival materials and publications related to the university, especially with respect to uncovering information about disenfranchised and marginalized individuals and communities and identifying further gaps, along with research on names of buildings and monuments on the Columbia campus.
The subcommittee also gathered information from other higher education institutions doing similar work including UNC-Chapel Hill, University of Virginia, University of Alabama, Georgetown University, Brown University, University of Georgia, and University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
The subcommittee worked with University of South Carolina students, faculty, staff and community members to collect name recommendations for future naming opportunities. The committee agreed on 16 names of African Americans:

Communication and Education Subcommittee

The Communications and University History subcommittees developed recommendations for educational activities, programs, events, and funding that will better disseminate a diverse and inclusive examination of the university’s history.
Opportunities to provide information and education include:
  • Adding an interactive map so that visitors can connect to different historical figures, subjects, and events by clicking on different buildings or sections of campus.
  • virtual tours
  • a booklet issued during student orientation that provides a brief, inclusive, and illustrated history of the University of South Carolina.
  • academic courses on the history of the University and/or incorporate research on the history of the University.
  • incorporate/update study of the University’s history into University 101
  • create an exhibit panel for each building providing the history of the building and a fuller biography of its namesake. This enables the University to provide educational and historical context on each building, regardless of renaming recommendations, while the Heritage Act is in place.

Names on the Landscape Subcommittee

The Names on the Landscape subcommittee established criteria for renaming buildings, produced research reports on 13 buildings, and recommended retention of three names and removal of ten names. It should be noted that Sims College was researched and voted on prior to the development of the criteria and procedures used for the subsequent 13 names.
Names recommended for retention:
Names recommended for removal:

Additional Recommendations

Funding and Research
  • Establish long-term, sustainable funding sources to support continued research and educational activities on the university’s history, including administrative support, faculty release time, salary supplements, and small grants programs.
  • Make funding sources available to both faculty and staff, as not all who are teaching are faculty, and allow for nonacademic departmental participation.
  • Support SCIAA proposal, NPHC Monument, Indigenous Discovery Tours of University of South Carolina’s Historic Horseshoe
  • Continue dedicated and funded research of names on the buildings and landscape, following the research methodology established by the Names on the Landscape Subcommittee.
  • Fund a dedicated post-doctoral position for 2-3 years to conduct oral histories with faculty, staff, students, and alumni, as well as at large community members to document their memories of and experiences with the university.
  • Encourage faculty and students engaged in the study of the university’s history to submit their work to Scholar Commons institutional repository.
  • Encourage all campus units to compose/update their histories and deposit them in the University Archives. Review them for needed updates every two years.
The commission’s work goes beyond the focus of building renaming. The commission endorses the continuation of this important work, to capture this rich, diverse and evolving history of the University of South Carolina.
