Inside the commitment (part 2!) - Anthony Rose

South Carolina reclaimed the talents of a talented prospect at a key position earlier today when Anthony Rose gave word that he would be rejoining the Gamecocks' 2022 class.

Rose originally pledged to the Gamecocks in February - making him at the time Shane Beamer's lone commitment for the 2022 cycle. The four-star defender reopened his recruitment in May, but then hit Columbia for an in-person visit and camp experience in June that could not have gone any better. Shortly thereafter, Rose scheduled another trip to Columbia, the official visit that wrapped up today and led to the renewal of his verbal pledge.

Before we drop some updated information on Rose, here are a couple notes from our writings back when he committed earlier this year.

"The 6-foot-4 defender is an interesting prospect because of his height and length coupled with his ability to run and coverage skills. He plays corner at the high school level, but could project to multiple positions in the secondary if needed." - Inside the commitment piece on GamecockCentral.com

We had a chance to scout Rose when he camped at South Carolina this summer and both Wes and I came away very impressed. He checked out from a size standpoint, had length, and ran very well. He posted a 4.47 40-yard dash time despite a sub-optimal start, and he really flashed in drills and one-on-ones. Rose had multiple interceptions during the one-on-one period - tough to do in that setting - and has the look of someone who could play any spot in the secondary. He also has the requisite attitude and demeanor you look for in a defensive back. He was one of the more impressive guys I've scouted as a DB at South Carolina's camp in a while.

Even when he headed to campus for camp and an unofficial in June, it still looked like a 50/50 proposition to us as to whether or not he would end up back in the class. But, the optimism grew after that trip and things hit in a big way during the trip this weekend.

Everyone OK with a boring style of play in 2021 if it gets us 6 or more wins?

If USC is going to win 6 plus games in 2021 it will be 4-5-6 yards and a cloud of dust. We are going to need to run the football a huge majority of the time. The strength are our backs. Long sustained drives giving the defense a bunch of rest hoping that helps them play well. A perfect game is Harris with 25-30 carries and 100- 150 yards and then 15 carries by the other backs for another 60-100 yards. Similar to Lou Holtz second year here.

Transfer Portal

For those that aren’t a fan, better get used to it. In all of the major sports. Also JC in baseball is going to become even more important. Talking to a couple “influencers” for athletes getting recruited, the biggest message they are giving them is to go immediately somewhere you will play. Reps will help develop you, then after a year or two you can transfer to play where you want. Baseball is going to be the worst. Almost nobody is going to go and sit and wait till there junior year to play when they can go to JC and play immediately. We have to face the fact that most of these kids only see the schools as a tool to help get them to the Pro’s.

*** LIVE: Shane Beamer Camp, Day 6 - OL/DL Camp and 7-on-7 tourney (June 17) ***

The Shane Beamer Camp circuit is fired back up today as South Carolina is set to host camps Thursday, Friday and Saturday to close out the week. Both Thursday and Friday will be a little different than the previous camps in that both of those days will feature an OL/DL Camp and a team 7-on-7 passing tournament. The OL/DL camp starts bright and early at 7:30 a.m. and runs through 12:30 while the 7-on-7 tournament starts at 9 a.m. and will go to 5 p.m.

We'll post some more names and teams as we get them, but two teams that will definitely be there and have players we're tracking are Camden and Oceanside Collegiate.

Camden is, of course, home to class of 2023 defensive tackle Xzavier McLeod who will get his first opportunity to work with defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey. McLeod's latest trip to South Carolina went about as well as it possibly could have and I believe the Gamecocks exit that trip as the current favorite. Getting him back on campus can only be considered a major positive and make no mistake, he's a top priority for South Carolina.

Oceanside Collegiate's top prospect is four-star class of 2023 offensive lineman Monroe Freeling who has a ton of offers including from South Carolina.

The Gamecocks are a bit behind with Freeling right now, so this trip will be his first opportunity to meet the new staff and for the Gamecocks to try to make a move into the mix with him. The previous staff delivered his first offer and he's blown up in the year since then with a ton of offers.

Oceanside is also home to class of 2022 offensive lineman Jacob Ashley who has offers from Georgia State, Charleston Southern, Old Dominion and Howard.

It will also be our first opportunity to get a look at class of 2024 cornerback Zai Offord. As Chris detailed in this article, Offord is the son of former Gamecock and NFL defensive standout Willie Offord, who is now Oceanside's defensive coordinator.

Former Gamecock KC Crosby is also on staff there.

Oceanside has a couple of other guys we'll be keeping an eye on in class of 2023 running back Vaughn Blue and class of 2024 DL Ben Britton, who already checks in at 6-foot-3.5, 250-pounds.
