According to this it's down to 3

Good lord, not Paris. The guys on the radio acting like it's a done deal.

And before anyone starts in on why I’m bad mouthing before he gets the job I’ll state here my reasons for not wanting him:
1. Chattanooga has had a ton of success historically prior to his arrival. He’s done a solid job of turning it around but it seems just as much based on this one year as any candidate.
2. Defensive specialist under Bo Ryan. Sounds a lot like the Frank style here and the Brownell way at Clemson. Not only do both teams lose a lot, but throw in it’s boring to watch.
3. Will not energize the fan base one bit initially. May be the long term answer (remains to be seen and won’t doom him to failure) but McKie would put more butts in the seats and provide more of a spark.

Would prefer McKie also.

This very well could be the move that breaks me from cheering for my alma mater. Been attending games since 1988. There were just so many better options. People with ties to the area. And we end up with one really good year of head coaching experience as our leader. You could argue that Furman and Greensboro have been the class of that league the last few years…and Chattanooga puts a ton more into the basketball program than anyone else in that league.

Wow, give the man a chance if this the move. It would not have been my choice either, but you can understand the pause with B.J. not having head coaching experience. Paris has at least won something, so I am willing to see what he is going to do if hired.

Serious question: If that mid court prayer doesn’t go in against Furman and he has no tournament appearances, is he even interviewed?

That answer is a solid no. And knowing the history of Ray, and his coaching searches, I figured it would come down to the two candidates that nobody else wanted and USC had no competition. That told me that it would either be Paris, or BJ. So I watched his UTC team against Illinois the other night. UTC should have won the game. They were the better team. But they spent half the second half with their team going one on five and throwing up wild shots. And Paris never seemed to do anything on the sideline to stop it as it just continued. It was almost like whoever got the ball first once they crossed the time line was going to shoot it no matter what. This hire will generate zero excitement. But then again, this was expected. Ray was in charge. Got played again by his first choice. Then the others that had options other than USC took them. And Ray is left with the bottom of the barrel. Of course the sad part about all of this is that Ray us so close to retirement that none of this will come back on him.

That’s the worst part. There were a handful of candidates we could have had with a much better resume and did not even interview them.

Then once we got played to boost contracts at Xavier and LSU, we panic and hire a guy that no one was even interviewing. A candidate that has only had real success in the Southern conference for one season.

Ray should be fired immediately. This search and it’s results were that bad.

Probably not, but it did. That's how basketball is sometimes. The opportunities go to the winner in most instances. People usually don't ask how it happened. He did win the regular season title, and to me, that is more important than winning a tournament championship. Also, he built Chattanooga up gradually himself. They won only 3 conference games his first year. So, he is worth a shot. He will have some work to do locally as he is a Midwest guy, but I like some of the athletes he had on his team. Got Silva De Sousa out of the transfer portal from Kansas and I really liked the Malachi Smith kid he had on the wing. He was only a sophomore this year. Maybe he can bring him along with him.

I’ll concede the conference regular season matters. My issue is that before this year, the best you would find them is middle of the pack. It seems like we’re throwing a lot of hope toward “improvement every season” and one Southern conference title. I would argue Richey has done more in that conference, although they just haven’t gotten it done in the tournament.

Malachi Smith is a player. He could start here right away. Getting a Kansas transfer obviously is a good haul.

My issue is success in this league will be much more difficult. Chattanooga probably spends more than any other school in that conference. That’s not the case with us. And there is simply no sustained success on this hire. It feels a lot like Darrin Horn.

...but we hired Darrin Horn and we gave him a chance. From what was left, I put Paris up there with all of them. You could pick apart Richey the same way if we went in that direction. You could pick apart Medved. I saw a post above criticizing the one-on-one play of Chattanooga against Illinois. However, Chris Jans did the same thing with Teddy Allen at New Mexico State and rode it to the Mississippi State job. I am not stuck on one style of play as long as you win. Trust me, South Carolina will get something out of this. I can at least go in the barbershop now with my South Carolina hoodie and not get blasted about how South Carolina has never hired a Black basketball coach and everybody in the country has done that at least once. See, I have take on the brunt of that type of stuff. Most of you guys don't.

I’m blowing a lot of steam. Once that cools, I’ll give him a chance. But this has train wreck written all over it. I could be wrong and it’s 4-5 years down the road at best to have that argument.

Now you still could have worn that hoodie around if we hired BJ McKie. The only difference is they all would have known who you were talking about right away. If we were going to go this far down the list, I would have rather went with the alum much the way Michigan, Memphis and others have done.

I’d find a different barbershop. Just kidding.

Wonder if RT actually WENT AFTER a proven coach? Maybe made a call to Anthony Grant, John Becker, Brian Dutcher, Tim Jankovich, Darian DeVries, Greg Paulus, maybe some NBA assistants who are ready to move. There is a vast network out there.

No one will ever know. Most of that is done through agents and if there is no interest at all, chances are you will never hear about it. About the only time we find out is when we fly to visit them or vice versa. We are not Tennessee....thank God!

In searching for candidates, you either sit on your hands or by your phone and wait and see who might be interested (not a good strategy) or get moving and go after the people you want. Work down the list, the list you always should have on your desk or in your pocket. This is what we do in high school. Maybe the college boys have a better system.

Anthony Grant turned us down years ago. He was in the hunt during the search that ended up with Darin Horn. Rumored as saying that you can’t win at South Carolina. Ended up washing out at Alabama. You guys have no idea how the Black community kills us. I’d be hard-pressed to find a USC friendly barber shop.

I wasn't happy about our football coach hire but if he keeps going like he is then I will eat a lot of crow.

Experience didn’t seem to matter for football

This is an amazing hire. Carolina may have just made history. Are we the first P5 school that has a Black Male coach for the MBB team and a Black Female Coach for the WBB team? If Paris can produce 50% of what Dawn Staley has accomplished here at Carolina, he will get a statue. I know that is a lot to ask of the man, but I'm glad he earned the opportunity. A lot of you naysayers may have to eat your words in a few years. We just landed on the radar of many of the top recruits in this area due to this hire. Don't be surprised if we land GG and a few others. What a tremendous hire....Now, lets support this man....Go Gamecocks!!!

Considering he still has an overall losing record in the Southern Conference, I’m not sure he’s “built” anything. They won the automatic bid on a 40 foot jump shot at the buzzer or his best accomplishment would be the NIT.

Malachi Smith is a player. If he could transfer in that would be a good starting point.
Minimizing the man's accomplishments to try and prove your point...of course he has an overall losing record in the SoCon, that program was in shambles before he took the job. Look at the program now...65-27 record over the past 3 seasons with a regular season conference championship and tournament championship. Last time Ii checked, that conference is pretty damn good and highly competitive. This is a Great Hire and it's about time my University made a hire based on talent and accomplishments rather than the Good Ol' Boy system that has failed us for decades.

You serious Clark??

I'm completely underwhelmed by this hire. I was ready to move on from Martin, but had I known this would be the result, I would have been fine with dealing with him one more year.
BUT, all of that is water under the bridge now, and we have who we have. I'm cursed to be a Gamecock fan, so come this winter, I'll be right there, anticipating the new faces and new direction of the basketball program, cheering and hoping for the best.

Ok let’s get rid of all the emotion and dive into the facts.
1. It has nothing to do with him being black. I publicly advocated for BJ McKie so let’s get that $hit out of here. That’s a great place to start.
2. Which top recruit is burning up Twitter about going to SC that wasn’t 24 hours ago. I want names not a generic statement.
3. I’ll gladly eat crow if I’m wrong. But like the Kingston hire and the Muschamp hire, I have had few come back and ask me about my posts. They are easily searchable.
4. This guy has absolutely no ties to this area so acting like he’s going to pull in a bunch of recruits from here when he can’t even find a Zestos without a GPS is based on a lot of hope and no facts.

Donnie Tyndall 2.0….🥴🥴

Every head coach was an assistant. BJ is a Gamecock and a very good coach…he would not be an assistant at a major school if not. Hire BJ and give us someone we can believe in.

However, whoever we hire….I will support as a Gamecock fan

But the more I read about Paris the more I like the prospect of the hire. Mid major coaches scare me if they had one great year…this guy improved yearly overall.

Well lets dive into the facts.
1. I just pointed out the historical significance of the hire and it seemed to have rubbed you the wrong way. I'm sorry this didn't go the way you thought it would. It's something you're going to have to get used to....times are changing. This is a great progressive hire for My Alma Mater. Great Job Tanner.
2. A lot of the issues here have to do with him being black. The only reason you supported BJ Mckie is because coaches you wanted turned us down.... which is often the case with most of our Men's sports programs and we have to settle for lesser candidates....(See Darrin Horn, Sparky Woods, Brad Scott, Dave Odom and a host of others.) So, you are more comfortable with the black guy you think you know.
3. What top recruit has ever burned up Twitter about going to play basketball at Carolina? I want names and not generic statements as well. Why should Paris be held to a different standard?
4. The new MBB coach last name is Paris. What the heck does that have to do with Muschamp and Kingston?
5. Other than BJ McKie, what other candidate had ties to the area?
