Tampa’s John Dixon has long been a prospect on the Gamecocks’ radar at defensive back…
The four-star performer was back on the Gamecocks’ campus for an overnight visit on Monday, after which he spent time milling around indoor facility during USC’s first camp session of the summer.
Dixon has told GamecockCentral.com in the past that his strongest bond with a college coach is with USC’s Travaris Robinson. The two spent more time talking during the visit, with Will Muschamp pulling away from camp activities at multiple points to get some one-on-one time with Dixon as well. What was the message from the Gamecock staff?
“That South Carolina is the best overall place for me and that they’re just as interested in me as when I first got the offer,” Dixon said.
The Sunshine State product noted that his top five (formerly Alabama, Miami, Ohio State, Penn State, and South Carolina) has “changed a little” and that he’ll reveal those changes at a later date when he announces his official visit slate. Dixon’s plan is still to take those visits during the season and render a choice at a later date.
Needless to say, USC is still a major player here.
We noted after a big official visit weekend for the Gamecocks that USC’s position with North Carolina’s Savion Jackson was strong…
Wes Mitchell noted that South Carolina was the favorite after the trip. No shock there, as the Gamecocks jumped out to an early advantage with Jackson after its offer early last year. NC State and Virginia Tech muddied the waters at times, but the trip could not have gone any better for the Gamecocks in terms of impressing Jackson and the family members he had in tow.
Jackson pegged early this season as a potential decision timeline for him, citing the desire to want to be 100% sure of his choice.
If he comes to the decision that he knows? We wouldn’t rule out an earlier pledge.
*EDIT - after this report was published on Wednesday - Jackson revealed he would announce his college choice next Wednesday.
Many may be wondering about this coming weekend’s visit slate…
As of this writing, it should be a light one. Linebacker commitment Jahmar Brown is planning to be in town for an unofficial visit; he has family nearby in Aiken and is going to stop over and visit them.
Five-star defensive back Chris Steele is slated to attend a camp session at Southern Cal this weekend, and many I’ve spoken with believe the Trojans are the odds-on favorite. Steele has continued talking about Florida and South Carolina behind the scenes, but South Carolina will have to secure an official visit before Steele shuts down the process.
There have been a few different weekends during the summer in which it looked like it could have happened, but it has not come to fruition thus far. Steele has continued communications with the staff and his interest in the program and the staff’s track record of development appears legitimate. It’s just imperative that he return to campus again for the Gamecocks to have another swing at it.
Let’s run down more camp and visitor notes in this space…
A contingent from McEachern High in Georgia was on hand Tuesday, with wide receiver Javon Baker nabbing a South Carolina offer at the camp’s conclusion. 2020 running back Jordon Simmons was among them but did not work out during the camp. That will change soon, as he’s slated to return to Columbia next Tuesday and work out for the coaches.
Four-star offensive lineman Warren McClendon plans on making a two-day unofficial visit to South Carolina on June 14 and 15. The Gamecocks have been considered the behind the scenes frontrunner for the Georgia product for a while now.
Florida’s Major Williams tweeted a South Carolina offer on Tuesday following a camp stop in Columbia, but we’ll pass along to our subscribers that are not heavily tracking the Virginia commitment at this time.
In-state defensive lineman Alex Huntley out of the 2020 class will be on the Gamecocks’ campus again on Thursday to participate in a camp session. South Carolina is thought of as the frontrunner for the Hammond product.
On Saturday, USC offensive line commitment Issiah Walker out of the 2020 class and 2021 North Carolina speedster Evan Pryor, who carries a USC offer, will be on hand.
