Simone Biles pulls out of the team competition. It's unknown at this point if she will compete in the individual events.

She is not a GOAT athlete after this. She isn’t Michael Jordan or like Tom Brady level. Those people don’t start losing a game and just quit because they have bad feels because they are being to stressed out. Simon is the voice of a generation who was not taught duty and honor/But taught to mock it.

If you want to know who the GOAT of Gymnastics is. Look up that girl from years ago who performed on a broken leg. Kerri Shrug. I am not even into Gymnastics and I know her name because of what she did.

There is a difference in competitive pressure and the miscalculation of a gymnastic exercise that can break your neck. If you have not watched the event that set this off, please go back and watch. Watch the look on Biles' face while upside down in the air and let me know if you think it still is a Tom Brady/Michael Jordan situation. You know I am a football and basketball guy. I am big enough to say I don't understand and allow experts in the sport explain it to me.

I think the “she could break her neck” logic is a little far fetched. She looked bad, but it’s not like she couldn’t land on her feet. It wasn’t pretty for the Olympics, but it’s not like she looked like Joe Dirt out there.

Heck you could say there is risk to every Olympic athlete. Someone could drown playing water polo, but I don’t see anyone sitting it out. Kevin Durant could try to block a shot on defense and leave his feet early, flip over an offensive player and land on his neck. Risk is never completely eliminated.

It's actually Kerri Strug and even she tweeted support for Biles' decision.

It’s called the twisties. Research it and get back to me.

You sort of have to support her decision publicly. You will get lambasted if you criticize her decision.
No you don't, you could either not say anything at all or get a ton of support from people like y'all who totally dismiss her experience.

Nobody’s dismissing her experience, let’s just not call it courageous. Call it what it is. Sad.

Unfortunately it's fairly common for gymnasts to get injured or paralyzed. The vault she did was a bail out, not even what she was trying to compete with that gave her the lowest score in the about 10 years. This isn't the sport that you can autopilot with, unfortunately many young people over the years like the lady in the article wish she had made a similar decision. I rather the headline be Simone Biles drops out of the Olympics competition over Simone Biles possibly paralyzed from the neck down.

I for one think it takes a lot of courage and self discipline to know your breaking point. Gymnastics is dangerous. Way more so than football or basketball if you have an off night. I took gymnastics as a kid. Not knowing up from down in mid air is flat out scary. No I was no where near the level as biles or even a 10th. I commend her for doing what she felt was right for here and not what the world wanted her to do.

Well I guess people are calling it courageous for taking care of her health despite it might costing her some personal glory. Many other Olympic athletes like Strugg, Phelps and others are praising her for being open about something many of them believe that didn't have the option or felt brave enough to do.

Sure some more mentally ill people think it’s great. Ok. Do we see the problem here?

I think everyone (on both sides) is making too much of this. Careers end in any number of ways, and at any number of times. It doesn't take away from her legacy as the GOAT of gymnastics. It's also doesn't keep this from being a very disappointing performance.

She's 24 so that's about time most female gymnast retire. Depending on how this all plays out, it wouldn't surprise me if she comes back in 3 years for a redemption tour or at the very least come in as a specialist. Barring an injury or a mental lapse like today she could probably still win a Gold in at least 3 events in 2024 without changing a thing.
She quit again. Say no more.

Eh, she's no Nadia. The simple fact is, you can't claim that you're the greatest and then bail. I hate that she's having issues. She's a great gymnast. But the media always wants to anoint the latest person the greatest because it generates views. GOATs don't have to proclaim that they're the greatest.
Card carrying memberof B*** She a quitter. Facts are what they are. No medical issues, just a quitter

I bet you're fun at party's...I'm not sure why people are making such a big deal about this. I'm going out on a limb and say no one here has remotely been in her and any other athletes shoes.

You are correct. No one on this board has ever been the best in the world at an athletic endeavor. Not even elite. And they have no clue the sacrifice necessary - or the mental toughness necessary - to compete at a level even close to this.

That said, she has and I think she was past her prime and she felt it. A teenager has won the all-around in the Olympics since 2000 - including this year. She was feeling ok going into it, but there is a reason teenagers win the most. Adding another year because of covid was just too much on her body and brain. It's a tough sport.

I think the last sentence nailed it...It's hard to fathom that at age 24 you are past your prime in this sport. Interesting enough the extra year was beneficial to some of the young swimmers. The teenager from Alaska probably wouldn't have got a gold medal if it wasn't for the extra year.

That's not really true either, she's been the most dominant gymnast the past 10 years and despite a subpar performance in the qualifications she still had the highest score in qualifications. She was the overwhelming favorite to repeat as an All-around champion, she hasn't lost in years. While 24 is definitely old for a gymnast, she didn't show any signs of it and looked better than ever, which is why the whole ordeal is shocking and disappointing.

Now that the team competition is done, maybe she’ll come out swinging for individuals.

You don’t get to where she is without being mentally tough - being at the top of the gymnast game that long (or any length of time) takes amazing mental fortitude on a literal daily basis. I’ll bet she comes back - or at least I hope she does.
It looks like her comeback is back for sure with her being the GOAT of the quitters club. Congrats!!

I dunno. Maybe. Was it in the middle of the team finals, costing the team a shot at the gold medal?

I just read what Biles had to say about it. Pretty easy to read between the lines: she wasn’t doing as well as she hoped to do, so she withdrew.
Like it or not she quit on her teammates. Her teammates did not go to Tokyo to win the silver medal. Who likes finishing second when they should be finishing first. This is something whether you like it or not she will not be ableto live down. Finishing second. Come on.
