Skip Holtz out at Louisiana Tech

Sounds like this was mutual, and truly mutual. Never heard a coach saying he’s not done coaching, just time to put his energy somewhere else. La Tech would be crazy to fire Skip. I think this is the rare case where both sides met and agreed it was time for change.

I think it was the 2001 Alabama game at home (someone correct me if I'm misremembering which game) - but I've been a HUGE Skip fan ever since that game. Mainly because he and Phil Petty were on the sideline in deep conversation late in the game and Lou came over and butted in, and you could tell Skip was basically like 'GTF out of here, we got this" 😂 And they did. I still say Lou would have had more success if he'd given full rein of the offense to Skip instead of trying to relive his glory days at ND with Tony Rice and the 3 yards and a cloud of dust mentality

I also didn't understand why Skip left ECU for USF. Seemed like a lateral move to me, plus he was doing well at ECU, but completely flopped at USF.

I played golf with Skip and Lou a few times and remember Skip telling me that Dondrial Pinkins was one of the best QB his ever seen. I still laugh about that. However, he’s a really good guy and hopefully he will land on his feet somewhere.

Skip knew offense better than his Daddy knew offense. Skip did well at UConn. Things went South here when Lou determined to reestablish what he had at Notre Dame with Tony Rice. Jenkins and Pinkins couldn't get him there and defensive coaches had caught up with it anyway. Lou bought the wrong stock.

Really dumb move by La Tech. It's probably the worst year to try and fill a head coach position as well. There are going to be way more openings than there are good coaches to fill them this year. 90% chance they end up with a dud.
There are lots of openings every year. Let the carousel begin.

I'd be interested to know who made more money from actual coaching salary not including personal endorsements over their career.
Lou or Skip. Just the money they got paid for coaching school X.

Fact is Skip is a really smart coach and is super with the kids would like to see him back on our staff in some capacity.
He would definitely fit in with the culture that Beamer is trying to build. I just don't see him being an OC here, when he can be a HC elsewhere.

Dang, last I heard about him he was ECUs head coach. It would be cool if Beamer scooped him up for some position here- if he could benefit the program.
