What’s with the sudden billionaire “Space Race” ?

I love it! I always wanted to be in space in a starship Enterprise... This is a dream come true for people who want to do Space travel and we just took the first steps since July 20, 1969..

almost all the real estate on this planet is spoken for…..so……time to make & profit by outfitting the moon, Mars, Space cruises etc…..
buy your grandchildren a few shares and give it to them in 10 years or so

Jeff Bezos and his brother Mark started building Blue Origin in 2000.

Richard Branson started building Virgin Galactic in 2004.

Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002.

So, not really so "sudden."
Seems you should be able to ride in/on your own stuff.

I have never and will never question how wealthy men spend their money as long as it doesn't work to the detriment of others. They've earned the right. I would say this about anybody, even people of lesser means.
Yep, I'd rather see a billionaire buy a spaceship ship than a welfare mom buying lottery tickets.

Yep. It's a dick measuring contest from two execs that could give a rat's ass about humanity. If anything, it should make people despise those two even more.
Whatever you think of them, they made their money and have a right to spend as they see fit. If you feel so passionate about feeding the world, why don't you sell all your possessions and donate it to feeding the world? I didn't think so. You have no idea what causes either supports.

Branson has, Bezos will in a week or so and Musk will eventually ride on starship. Starship is a very long way from being ready. But then again Musk does drive a Tesla. Something he made.

Good point. But for something started 15-20 years ago their launches are “weeks”apart.

I am loving this billionaire space race. No doubt we will get a ton of useful technology from this to better the average person's lives.

I’m all for it. Boys with their toys. But This also has a lot to do with sending satellites into space . The future road and bridge problems will be satellite trash. Elon has been approved to send 12k satellites up.

but this week billionaires will meet up to talk about green new deal and climate concerns. I’m guessing that rocket fuel will not be a topic.

Large government subsides and tax credits.

Also, billionaires see overpopulation as the greatest threat to earth.

Really? So Bezos hasn't been in the news for horrible working conditions at some Amazon warehouses? Also lawsuits for unfair labor practices? Branson I don't have as much of a problem with but both have lived high on the hog while skirting taxation and reaping the benefits of having massive tax breaks from communities that are desperate for work and want them to build there. Look Bubba, if you're gonna come at me with your bullshit, at least be some sort of a challenge to me. And no where did I say they should "feed the world". That's a piss poor attempt at a straw man you got there. Lol.

overpopulation will do us all in. We are already having water problems, overfishing and other things. What’s it going to be like when the population doubles again in around 50-60 years.

Pretty sure they are abiding within the context of the tax law. That's not skirting taxation...it's doing what every American does every year. No one willingly pays more taxes than they have to.

Certainly it's within the law where they heavily massage the system. There are no excuses for major corporations not paying their share of taxes. Some people falsely idolize corporations and their executives, I choose not to. They abuse the system the worst.

There are kids starving in the world
Wasn't this Jeff's post you were replying to? So have you sold everything yet? Or just another idealistic liberal talking point telling someone what they should do with their money?

Well, actually it's the bottom 50% of wage earners that aren't paying their fair share of taxes. But who wants to beat up on them when the corporations and billionaires are much easier targets?

For anyone scoring at home, the bottom 50% of wage earners paid a whopping 3% of federal income taxes as recently as 2018. The top 1% carried 40% of the burden. Fair share?? It's not even close.
