Saturday's unlikely superstars

Stone had two homeruns and had a hit that hit the top part of the fence and also had a flyout that was caught on the warning track.

Becker came in to pitch to relieveJerzembeck in the top of tenth inning with two on and no outs and got out of the side inning giving up no runs. Pitched three scoreless innings helping South Carolina earn the sweep against Missoui.

Great performance from Stone and Becker.

Who is Eli Sparkman?

I do not recall any news of this kid joining the basketball team. They have a bio on every player with the exception of Sparkman. Do I have to call the FBI for any scouting information or evaluation on Sparkman? Boooooooo
Since the football team has a bye week this would be a good time for a basketball press conference. South Carolina opens the season less than month with South Carolina State.

South Carolina locker room quotes (Pre-Maryland)

Some quotes from the locker room before the Elite Eight game, including some stuff from Dawn Staley herself in an off-podium interview.

Dawn Staley:

On Bree Hall's growth:
"She's confident. I'm confident in her. She has put in a lot of work to gain trust from us and our coaching staff, and we don't question whether or not she's going to be ready to play. Anywhere we put her in the game, whether it's the end of the first quarter, the beginning of the first quarter, if she sits for the first quarter and gets in the second quarter, she always bring the same energy. And now she's bringing her ability to space the floor and get to the rim. Her career is just developing really nicely."

On defending Maryland's 5-out offense:
"Our bigs are used to guarding on the perimeter, probably not for 40 minutes. And the way that Maryland plays they spread you out, they downhill drive, they kick you out for 3-point shooters that are spacing the floor, and they pressure you full court when they're able to get into their three quarter court press.

They can turn you over. I looked at our stats, and we had 20 turnovers against them. We can't have 20 turnovers tomorrow and think we're going to win this basketball game. You give and take when you play that game. The give is you may hit some 3s, the take is they may miss some, we rebound and we push it right back at them. A lot of times when teams play that way they're not very good at defending the way that we play, so we have to attack that tomorrow."

Jokingly asked if Aliyah Boston could play point guard:
"I'm never going to doubt Aliyah Boston, ever (laughing). If she thinks she can be a Dawn Staley point guard, we might try her tomorrow."

On defending Diamond Miller:
"We definitely have to mix up the looks. They start a smaller lineup, so V [Victaria] will be challenged in trying to guard her. Obviously Brea Beal is going to be challenged in trying to guard him. I think the beauty in what we've been able to do all season long is give people like Diamond different looks. Hopefully we can put Raven on her and Raven can play underneath her a little bit, we can put LA on her and LA can be long on her. V can use her fifth-year savvy and understand beating Diamond to the spot. We're going to have to play different people."

Zia Cooke:

On the Elite Eight:
"Both teams are trying to get to the Final Four, and that's very hard to do. We're going against a great opponent as well, so I think we're both going to be very prepared for the moment, and there's going to be a lot of energy in the gym."

On what's different between Maryland in November vs. now:
"Diamond [Miller] being back is very, very key. I think she's the glue to their team. She's the reason why they win a lot of games because of the experience that she has and how much of a good player that she is."

On facing a team that runs a 5-out offense:
"I don't think it's too much of a challenge, because we've seen so much. I think we're prepared for whatever they bring us. But it kind of helps us in a way, because we can kind of play defense the way we want to play.

Victaria Saxton:

"They're a great team. Like I said before they're aggressive, they're going to look to get to the basket, they're going to make 3, so we just have to be aware and know what's going on out on the court."

On if they play more like an SEC team than a Big Ten team (as Dawn aluded to at the podium):
"I mean hey, I think SEC teams are pretty up there, and I think that's where they are."

Said Maryland doesn't remind her of anyone the played this year "off the top of her head."

On a late tip-off and waiting around all day:
"I mean, I just kind of relax. I might get some schoolwork done, just not worrying or anything like that. I'm pretty chill, honestly."

Laeticia Amihere:

On the Elite Eight:
"That's to get to the next level, that's to get to Dallas. Everybody is gunning for the Final Four. Obviously everyone is gunning for the championship, but I feel like this is goign to be the toughest game.

On if she is thinking about how close the team is to the Final Four:
"I definitely will when we get to the game the game tomorrow. I'm really trying to be in the moment and take everything by bits and pieces."

On the differences between Maryland now and November:
"Diamond Miller, obviously. She's a big piece of their puzzle, and it's going to be a different ballgame when she's in. We just have to limit her production. She's very tall, she's lengthy, she has guard skills, so that's a good bag to have."

On if they've faced someone similar to Maryland:
"They run a lot of similar plays like UCLA, so we're definitely looking at that and trying to have a read on what they did back at the beginning of the season and use those adjustments."

Bree Hall:

On the Elite Eight:
"Both teams are really fighting to go to Dallas, so I think that is definitely the hardest game."

On what's different about Maryland:
"I think they've gelled together a lot better. It's the postseason, so eveyone has cleaned up their mistakes or adjusted what they didn't like earlier in the season. And then also having Diamond is a very big difference."

On what makes Maryland unique:
"I think the most unique thing is probably their 5-out. They don't really have any true post players, so they're all pretty much guards."

Olivia Thompson:

On the Elite Eight:
She was talking about the Texas game in 2021 in the bubble as such a hard game, and then went on to say:
"I think the reason why it's such a difficult game is because everyone is bringing that extra little push to get to the Final Four. We just have to bring it. They're definitely going to bring it and throw everything at us, so we have to be ready to take that and bring it back. You can definitely feel the excitement. It has a little bit of a different feel to it, but we're still just being true to ourselves and staying on track."

On what's different about Maryland:
"They've grown a lot within their offense. When we played them they didn't have Diamond Miller who is such a key player for them. She's a force on offense, so we have to be ready for them. Their shooting ability is outstanding, so we have to be ready for that."

On the 5-out offense:
"I know UCLA definitely can do that, they're shooters one through five. But Maryland is different when it comes to that shooting, they're definitely an exceptional team in that area. We have to be ready to defend that, but I think we're ready for that."

South Carolina vs. UCLA Sweet Sixteen Live Thread

Live from press row at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. We will have No. 3 seed Notre Dame vs. No. 2 seed Maryland in the first game starting right about now, and then 30 minutes after the conclusion of the undercard will be the main event, South Carolina vs. UCLA.

Should be a fun dayt of basketball in Greenville. Already a good crowd here, of course heacily South Carolina favored but Notre Dame and Maryland both appear to have traveled well.

Let's do it!

South Carolina Locker Room Post-game Quotes (Post-UCLA)

Wasn't able to get to everyone in a very, very crowded locker room today with a tight time limit, but here's what I was able to get.

Zia Cooke:

On Kiki Rice being her primary assignment:
"Yup. Yes it was." (with a big smile on her face)

"I was just trying to do my job and make sure I limited her to as many points as I could. It's definitely a pride thing, playing great defense. We know that's what can win games for us."

On defense being contagious:
"It flows really well. It's just something that's in us. We're a defensive team, and that's why we do what we do."

On the runs:
"Everybody just being locked in. I think we had a great team win tonight. If one person can't hit a shot someone else will, I think that's the beauty of our team. Our bench did an amazing job, so shoutout to them."

On the difference between tonight and November. We knew what we were great at, and we wanted to limit that as much as we could."

Kierra Fletcher:

On defense:
"It's super contagious. We have the best defense in the country, and I think that showed today from top to bottom. We showed we can guard anybody. We just played extremely, extremely good team defense especially in the first half when our shot wasn't falling quite as much as we'd like. But we kept them shooting not a great percentage either."

On stopping UCLA:
"I think we just sped them up a lot. I think we're just locked into the game plan, locked into what we were praticing in practice and we blew up a lot of their sets. I think that kind of hurt them."

On on getting off to a quick start:
"It was super important. We've been saying that we wanted to start a little bit better, and I think that we did today. I just think everyone played well. Our defense was great, offensively we kind of opened it up in the seocnd half. We just played great team basketball throughout."

On the 3rd quarter runs:
"I think it's a mixture of both. I think coach does a great job of making adjustments."

Victaria Saxton:

On defense:
"I just think it kind of shows that we're a defensive team, and that's who we've been all season long."

On the differnces between this game and the last UCLA game:
"I think we were just kind of locked in and focused on what we were doing. We were focused, and we know what we're trying to get to ahead of us. We have to take it one game at a time, and this was one of the games ahead of us."

On UCLA's foul trouble:
"It just tells you to keep going at them and hope that the ref will continue to call it."

Laeticia Amihere:

On defense:
"It's amazing. It's something we take pride in. We held them to 15 points at halftime. We came into the game and knew we had to get some stops to get a win."

Said they did "everything" better this game than they did in the last game against UCLA and they are "clicking a lot more" as a team. "We have a lot more experience under our belt, and we just showed it today."

On another rematch on Monday:
"I said this before, I think Coach does a great job of scheduling a great pre-season poll schedule for us. We're playing the best teams at the beginning of the season, and we have a little bit of familiarity with these teams. We knwo what to do, and we're preapred for it."

On the home crowd advnatage:
"It was so amazing. We were watching the other game and when we got up, everyone was cheering us. It's so great to have a home court advantage cheering us on."

Raven Johnson:

On defense:
"It just tells you about our team and our drive for playing defense. Defense wins championships, and we take pride in our defense."

On what went better this game than the first UCLA game:
"Our defense. It started with our defense. We didn't really have our best offensive game, but we took pride in our defense and it led to offense."

On foul trouble:
"When people get in foul trouble we just try to attack them and get them out of the game. And we have some of the best post players, so we just try to attack them."

On playing with Kamilla:
"I just throw it to the girl and let her go get it."

Kamilla Cardoso:

(She was on an exercise bike doing this interview because Aliyah took over her space)

On defense:
"I think we were just more locked in, we were able to stop their guards. Our guards did a great job on them. I think Brea Beal, Bree Hall and Zia did a great job guarding the guards. Beal, she is incredible. She can guard your forwards, she can guard your posts, she can do everything."

On it flowing through the roster:
"When I see them clapping up and playing it up and getting a stop, I'm like 'damn, I need to get a stop.'"

Talaysia Cooper:

On her block:
"I honestly do think I got it clean."

Said she's never had a block like that in college but did in high school, but it's not a big deal. "I got back on defense," she said.

On defense in general:
"When you see everybody else locked in on defense, that's going to make you want to lock in on defense. Defense wins championships, offense wins games."

Olivia Thompson:

On defense:
"That's definitely something that our team just takes pride in as a whole, that we have that many defensive threats out there on the court. It's just hard to beat us. It defenitely spreads through everybody. Everybody is motivated by each other to just bring that energy every single time. Our starting five, they're great examples of great defenders, so everyone just kind of takes the lead from there."

On the difference between this UCLA game and the last one:
"I think we struggled offensively, but I think when we struggle offensively our defense just naturally picks up even more. I think just on the defensive end we were way sharper. We understood our assignments more. I think we were on more in every aspect of the game."

A Couple of FB Visitors Today

We're hearing that DL D'Nas White and RB Tate Titshaw are on campus today for unofficial visits. Gamecocks in the mix for quite a few RBs right now and I expect they'll take at least 2 in this class. Anthony Carrie, Peyton Lewis, and Jayden "Duke" Scott all come to mind in addition to Titshaw. We've actually spoken to each of those guys if you check out the articles posted on their linked profile.

GG Jackson to NBA?

I've looked at four mock drafts. Two have him as the 14th pick, one at 15 and one at 21. All see him as a project that will get drafted on potential.

Is there any reason to stay at this point? If he's a consensus 1st round pick, then the first two years of his first contract are guaranteed. Using last year's numbers for the mock draft projections that would be either $8M, $7.6M or $5.7M. That's some real cash.

Of course he could try and play his way higher (even 10th get's you $2M more than the 14th selection), but then he runs the risk of being exposed if his "potential" doesn't start to show itself.
