Top 5 Wins Over Clemson Part One

Finishing up our season long looks at the schedule today before turning our attention to Ga. State tomorrow.

If you’re just tuning back in for the first time in a while @Stephen Anderson did a great series of the Top 5 wins in program history against each of the 2022 opponents.

Hawaii & Vandy

Caught some of the game tonite, from what I saw, Vandy appears to have revamped themselves quite well through recruiting & using the portal. Put a licking on Hawaii. Or, Hawaii has a lot of inexperience, major inexperience making Vandy look better, whole lot better than what they been in yrs past.
Based on what I saw, Vandy isn't the same Vandy as years past. Barring injuries, from what I watched, Vandy may have been a guaranteed win in years past, wouldn't wanna be caught looking past them.
They have a receiver from Laurens (I believe I'm correct), he's got some really nice speed, quite disciplined running routes & sticky hands. Defensively, LB's look bigger, faster & stronger, coupled w/ fairly mobile QB w/ arm & accuracy.
But again, Hawaii may have just had a bad game &/or in rebuild mode, or both???
Either way, Vandy, as of tonite showed something worth being concerned over. One game doesn't make a season, wouldn't go so far out on limb & put a win against Vandy.

Weekend Soccer Wrap

Tough loss for the men. The girls are rolling and ranked as high as #4.

FROM USC:

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The South Carolina men’s soccer team dropped its final match of the Wolstein Classic Sunday afternoon (Aug. 28) to Dayton 4-2.

The Flyers jumped out to the early lead when they scored in the 3rd minute. They would add goals in the 51st and 59th minutes to extend the lead.

Carolina got on the board late when Micah Colodny found the back of the net in the 81st minute for his first collegiate goal. Logan Frost and Cristiano Bruletti were credited with assists on the play. It was the first point of Bruletti’s career.

The celebration would not last long as Dayton quickly answered back. The Gamecocks responded in kind, as Laurits Lillemose found Bryce Griffith with 12 seconds remaining in the match. The goal was Griffith’s first of his career.

In goal, Ben Alexander finished with five saves. On the day, the Flyers out-shot the Gamecocks 20-6 and 9-3 on goal.

Carolina returns home to host No. 1 ranked Clemson Friday, September 2 at 7 p.m. Prior to the match the Gamecocks will host a block party in the Athletics Village Courtyard from 5-7 p.m. The free event will include food trucks, lawn games and inflatables. The first 200 students who attend the block party will receive a t-shirt courtesy of the South Carolina Education Lottery.

FROM USC:

BURLINGTON, VT – The No. 4 Gamecocks women’s soccer team defeated the University of Vermont 2-0 for their fourth shut out of the season on Sunday. The game marked the homecoming for head coach Shelley Smith (UVM ’94), and the first matchup between the two teams.

Breaking Down the Action
The first half started off quiet for both sides, until an early shot came from the Catamounts in the fourth minute of play. The Gamecocks answered with their first of the half from Corinna Zullo which was on target to the lower right corner but was saved by UVM goalkeeper Erin Murphy.
South Carolina kept up the energy with two consecutive shots in the 13th minute from Brianna Behm and Sam Chang but came up empty. Junior Cat Barry had a nailbiter straight to the bottom of the net but was met by a save from Murphy. Chang took two more shots (one on-goal) in addition to another from freshman Micah Bryant but each came up short.
In the 31st minute, senior Cam Dixon came up from the right-side line to punch one in for the Gamecocks in the high left corner to give South Carolina the first goal of the game and the lead 1-0. The goal was the first of the season for Dixon, as well as the first since her freshman year, three-years to the day (at Jacksonville, Aug. 28, 2019).

Payton Patrick got things started for Carolina in the second half, putting up a shot that was just wide to the left 23 seconds in. The Gamecocks put up eight more shots over the next 15 minutes compared to the Catamounts’ two.
In the 63rd minute, freshman Shae O’Rourke sent a beauty of a pass up front to Chang, where the senior capitalized and scored the second goal of the game, and the second for herself this season. The assist was O’Rourke’s third so far this year.
The Gamecocks finished with a 31-10 shot advantage (18 on goal), the highest so far this season. Senior goalkeeper Heather Hinz recorded five saves.

South Carolina will head home to face No. 18 Clemson at home on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7:00 p.m. in Stone Stadium.

Top South Carolina 2024 Fred Gaskin Recruitment Update

Fred Gaskin is a top-flight, 5-foot-10, 180-pound four-star defensive back hailing from Vanguard High School, a Florida High School Leauge (FHSL) powerhouse in Ocala, Florida that finished 11-1 in 2021. The all around-athlete that also starred periodically at quarterback has just received his No. 19 offer from the University of Alabama, and he shared his personal reaction to the offer from Nick Saban's Crimson Tide to recruiting editor Lee Wardlaw after the Gamecocks' Southeastern Conference rival pulled the trigger on the Rivals No. 8 defensive back in the United States:

"The offer from that day was a real blessing and a major surprise but like it was expected at the same time. I went there that day into that camp with the intention to make my self known and to show who I was. I think I made a really good first impression by how I did my drills full speed. I'm tired and all I gave my all at the camp I feel like I really earned that offer.

Wit the coaches and players in place at that program, (Alabama) seems like a great place to be. One thing I see is that they will not let you slack.

As we all know they are a very successful program on and off the field and have a very high rate of getting their players to better places," he said, most likely referring to the National Football Leauge (NFL), as well as other post-graduate opportunities.

They have all of what you would look for in a school and there's a great vibe there from their coaching staff," he said.
