Notes from training camp practice No. 1

--South Carolina media were able to watch stretch and the first five periods of practice Friday morning as the Gamecocks begin training camp in preparation for the 2021-22 season.

--I'll start by saying it's hard to glean much of anything from a physical standpoint or how guys are truly moving around on day once since guys are just in a helmet, jersey and shorts but there are a few observations on the depth chart and where guys are playing some.

--Luke Doty, as expected was with the first-team offense with ZaQuandre White the starting running back. The team lined up in 12 personnel (two tight ends, two receivers and a running back) and this was the first group.

Offensive line (left to right): Jazston Turnetine, Jaylen Nichols, Eric Douglas, Jovaughn Gwyn, Dylan Wonnum
Receivers: Josh Vann, Jalen Brooks
Tight ends: Nick Muse, Jaheim Bell
Quarterback and running back: Doty, White

--Jason Brown worked with another smaller group (Colten Gauthier was on the other field doing a drill with another offensive group) that wasn't an 11-man offense. In his group it was Vincent Murphy at one offensive line spot, Wyatt Campbell at another and Xavier Legette, EJ Jenkins, Payton Mangrum and Aaron Morton (both walk-ons). MarShawn Lloyd was the running back.

--This was Lloyd's first real practice since last season before his injury and he was moving around about as well as he could. We didn't get to watch any full team drills or anything where running backs had to make fast, hard cuts so the opportunity to observe him moving at 100 percent wasn't necessarily there.

--Kevin Harris, coming off a back procedure, was not out there on the practice field. Cam Smith had a foot procedure and was on a scooter with his foot in a cast, which was expected given Shane Beamer's injury update yesterday.

--It's hard to see a lot from a physical standpoint without contact going on, but Turnetine looks to have slimmed down and lost some of the not-great weight he added before training camp last season during quarantine. Him taking first-team reps likely means he's in good shape and showing this staff glimpses of what he was doing last spring before COVID shutdowns halted everything and sent him home.

--There was also a special teams drill where Dakereon Joyner, Josh Vann, Rico Powers, Jalen Brooks and JuJu McDowell were all fielding kickoffs and punts. That'll be a pretty fierce competition this training camp with the Gamecocks losing both Shi Smith and Jaycee Horn. McDowell has received some praise from players from his performance at player run practices and looks, from albeit limited viewing from afar, like he's quick and shifty.

--EJ Jenkins, listed as a receiver, was still working exclusively with the tight ends in the part of practice we were able to watch.

The next time we'll get to watch practice is Tuesday, which will be practice No. 5 of camp.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been very impressive early in training camp

Cleveland Browns defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been very impressive early in training camp. His coaches and several media outlets can’t stop saying enough good things about him.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski had a few things to say earlier in the week.

“Jadeveon is doing a really nice job. I enjoy having him out here,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. “He is a lively presence. He is a good teammate. He enjoyed practicing and enjoys running around. I see that from him. You mention the meeting rooms, he has been on point. He is trying to learn what we are doing and learn these techniques. He has been so far so good.”

The Associated Press was also impressed with Clowney’s performance against Pro Bowl left tackle Jack Conklin in camp on Tuesday.

They noted that Clowney “got the better” of Conklin several times and was a “constant presence” in the Browns backfield.

Clowney signed with the Browns this off-season for a one year, $8 million deal. Cleveland is hoping Clowney can be a pass rushing force opposite All-Pro teammate Myles Garrett. Garrett has already racked up 42.5 sacks in his NFL career thus far.

He’ll be looking to add to that total with Clowney taking pressure off on the other side of the defensive line. Garrett is a top candidate for NFL Defensive Player of the Yearhonors this season.

The tandem figures to be one of the best pass rushing duos in the NFL, if Clowney can stay healthy.

Health is the No. 1 concern for the pass rushing specimen and he even admitted that.

“I think when you’re healthy, you’re having fun. I’ve dealt with a lot of injuries and that’s not fun.”

Clowney has noted that he feels 100% healthy. That’s a great thing for Browns fans and bad news for opposing quarterbacks.

Freak of nature

There’s no other way to describe Clowney than a physical freak of nature. He was the top-rated prospect coming out of high school, according to every recruiting service in the country. He was an unblockable force that nobody could stop. That trend continued at the college level, where he was a one-man wrecking crew for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

He unleashed one of the hardest hits in college football history when he absolutely destroyed Michigan running back Vincent Smith.

The Browns defense

The Browns defense figures to take a massive leap this season, if Clowney and a few other pieces can stay healthy. Cleveland’s pass defense allowed 265.5 yards per game in 2020, ranking them 27th in the NFL in that category.

OT-Anyone remember??

An ole Columbia icon known as Taylor Street Pharmacy?
Open 24/7, had a grill & for a broke college kid, it was like sitting at the Pavilion in MB on Saturday nite people watching.
It was the original Wall Mart, sold everything.
Now a fire plug!
Another icon Tapp's Department Store. Loved eating lunch at the basement dining room.
Anyone remember the restaurant caddy corner to the state house? Now a parking lot.
Last one, Celebrity Supper Club Bout only place where you could get a real Porterhouse steak, cut to order. Ms. Mary (Tremendous Gamecock fan) was a dear friend. Wasn't in best of neighborhoods but, served fantastic steaks. Baskets of homemade sausage biscuits w/ cheddar cheese on every table. Fred & Bunny, both Cola icons would perform there from time to time.
Apologize for not being sports related. Bout to retire & the bride wuz quizzing me bout some of my clients.
All are gone now but, feel sure these may strike a memory (good, hopefully) for some.

Gamecocks add walk-on DB from Texas

Camden Hardy from Frisco TX. Had committed to Air Force in the '21 class. Also had offers from Army, Dartmouth, & Incarnate Word.

Camden Hardy finished last season ('19) with 28 tackles -- 20 of which were solo -- and 10 pass deflections in only eight games recorded for Reedy, which advanced to the UIL Class 5A Division II playoffs in 2019. Hardy also was a special teams returner, contributing in both kickoffs and punts.
He has been clocked in the 40-yard dash as 4.54 seconds, and he currently owns a 3.6 grade-point average.

Chris Lammons w/ a pick in training camp practice

For the Chiefs, yesterday. He needs to show out just to make the practice squad this year. Coach Toub, the ST’s coach, loves Lammons. DB competition in Chiefs camp this year is fierce.
CBs: Ward, Sneed, Fenton & Hughes seem locked in. Baker, Keyes & Lammons are fighting for 1 or 2 spots.
Safeties: Matthieu, Thornhill, Sorensen & Will Parks seem locked in. Watts, Devon Key & an UDFA outta BYU seem to be battling for 1 or 2 spots. Just an FYI.

OT: Where to go for labor day weekend with my wife and little dog

My kids have decided we are a baby sitting agency. I told them no way i am doing anything to help on Labor Day weekend as we are going to be out of town. They just expect us to drop everything and take care of the grandchildren every time they have a whim to go out of town. The twins are 15 months and the oldest is 3 years old so it is nothing but a diaper fest and sleepless time . We live in Greenville. Open to suggestions in SC, NC or GA. We do like water. Bottom line is we have to get the hell out of here!

Any reason why 107.5 didn’t cover Beamer’s Media Day Today live?

Maybe I missed their explanation, but it seems like the Gamecock Flagship station would be at the Preseason kickoff press conference.

instead, I got to listen to soccer updates, jersey numbers, gabbing about fire trucks, and some lady’s macaroni and cheese. Priceless.

thankful that there are media people there covering it - following their tweets on Twitter.
