Interesting Clayton White tidbit

WKU Safety Devon Key is an un-drafted free agent for the Chiefs. He’s repping w/ the 1’s & 2’s in training camp. Some of the Chiefs’ analysts have commented that the knock on Key before the draft was poor tackling. One specifically stated: “the kid has great Instincts & is picking up the Chiefs defense very quickly, b/c he played in a complex scheme under Clayton White at WKU. That scheme prepared him well to learn Spagnuolo’s scheme in KC.” - Chris Clark (different guy) on the Locked On Chiefs podcast, last night.
That should be a golden nugget on the recruiting trail. JMHO.

LHN doesn't die, it becomes the SEC West Network w/ studios in Austin

LHN doesn't die, it becomes the SEC West Network w/ studios in Austin. That is what workers in Austin are being told, they have jobs. It will be paired free as a part of the SEC network package, not separately billed or requested. Run by the SEC network, but maintaining Austin offices for productions on teams in the west part of the SEC. Evidently all a part of the deal with Disney. The Birminghams studios focusing more on the east of the SEC with some joint programming.

Carolina Confidential - Pres. by Herring Insurance - Lonergan, Glover, New LB target and more

** South Carolina made the cut to 12 on Wednesday for Snellville (Ga.) Brookwood class of 2023 four-star quarterback Dylan Lonergan and while I realize a top grouping that still includes that many schools isn't usually worth getting excited about, there's a little more to dive into here.

First of all, I think it's safe to say, even if Lonergan had cut his list to a far smaller group, the Gamecocks would have definitely been in it. There are still dominoes to fall in the 2023 QB recruiting cycle, so it's early yet, but South Carolina is firmly in this one folks and a major factor.

One of those dominoes already fell when Tad Hudson committed to North Carolina. As Chris explained earlier this week, that's not a bad thing at all for the Gamecocks. They weren't really recruiting Hudson and he takes the QB spot in UNC's 2023 class. The Tar Heels went from being a "dream offer" for Lonergan - and a likely major factor - to not making the official cut to 12.

Lonergan's Top 12 consists of: South Carolina, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon and Penn State in his top group.

To be sure, there's some strong competition there. But the Gamecocks hosted Lonergan for the first camp of the summer in June and that visit went great. I'd expect him back in Columbia for a game this fall.

The biggest QB domino for that class is indeed top-rated QB Arch Manning and his decision will likely impact several schools' plans at the position.

** We still don't expect Lakeland (Fla.) Lake Gibson class of 2022 four-star running back Jaylon Glover to pick South Carolina when he announces on Friday but the likely destination there has seemingly changed.

While Florida had been deemed the likely choice, word out of that area is now that Glover is going to pull a surprise and pick Utah. I usually lean on the local guys for out-of-state kids and Corey Bender of the Florida Rivals site has changed his pick from the Gators to Utah.

Word is that he's known the Utah coaches the longest and is going with the longest relationship.

As I previously reported, it is still to be determined what direction the Gamecocks will go at the RB position for the class of 2022.

** But looking ahead to the class of 2023, we've told you quite a bit lately about Stafford (Va.) Mountain View RB Ike Daniels and there's a reason for that. Part of our job is to find that intersection between when the Gamecocks really like a prospect and said prospect has a strong interest in the Gamecocks. Fresh off his second visit to the school for the cookout this past Saturday, Daniels certainly fits that description.

Looking ahead a bit, Daniels also plans to be back in Columbia for the Gamecocks' season opener on Sept. 4 and already plans to take an official visit to South Carolina when he takes those next year.

The Virginia native has unofficials planned for just South Carolina and Virginia Tech so far this fall and I think you can read into those being the likely early favorites here.

Needless to say, he's a prospect we're tracking heavily for that class.

** South Carolina extended an interesting class of 2022 offer on Sunday in Huntsville (Ala.) Madison Academy class of 2022 three-star linebacker Deuce Spurlock, who we spoke to that afternoon.

Spurlock has talked about wanting to make a decision soon but seems intrigued by the offer from South Carolina.

Spurlock also has a unique connection to Clayton White in that his friend Will Ignont was a linebacker for White at Western Kentucky last season, so Spurlock has actually been paying attention to that program some. Ignont sat out per transfer rules during that season but still, for a prospect who is new to the Carolina recruiting board, Spurlock already had quite a bit of background knowledge of White and what he and his scheme is all about.

The Gamecocks are still looking for linebacker prospects in this class and I could see Spurlock quickly becoming one to keep an eye on, especially if he makes an early-season trip to Columbia.
