The MLB Draft begins next week, and there is a good chance a lot of South Carolina players either hear their names called or sign free agent deals.
Unless things change over the next nine days before the first round of the draft, I would think Brady Allen, Wes Clarke, Thomas Farr, Brannon Jordan, Brett Kerry, Daniel Lloyd and Andrew Peters are either drafted or sign free agent deals.
All of those guys are draft eligible and just finished at least their third or second years in the program (for JUCO guy). Of that group, Farr and Jordan are two of the higher-rated guys from a pitching perspective while Allen is probably the best hitter prospect based on draft boards.
Then there are three guys who are still up in the air, for the most part: Julian Bosnic, Josiah Sightler and Andrew Eyster.
--Bosnic is someone who certainly has the tools and the stuff to be drafted and had a very good year as a starter and reliever this season: 4-2, 2.84 ERA, 0.928 WHIP and 78 strikeouts to 25 walks. At this point, I would project Bosnic being drafted and signing with a professional team. Bosnic is a lefty who can ratchet up his fastball into the mid-to-upper 90s with a really good curveball. He could come back and certainly be one of the team’s starting pitchers next season if he opted to return for his redshirt junior year but right now it seems likely he will be drafted (likely on day two) and the money should be good enough to sign.
--If Bosnic is a professional lean, then I’d say Sightler is a lean to coming back to school. Sightler is coming off his best season where he slashed .268/.352/.437 with seven homers, 31 RBI and 17 walks to 46 strikeouts as the team’s left fielder and cleanup hitter. Sightler was someone who turned down good money out of high school after being drafted by the Reds in the 12th round, and if he gets similar money this year it might hard to turn down but right now it seems that he’ll be back next season for South Carolina.
--Eyster is interesting and, it sounds super obvious, but his status won’t be known until after the draft and free agent signings. He could absolutely be drafted (if he is, probably a day three selection) but he could also sign a free agent deal after the 20-round draft and play professionally that way. I think if Eyster was given a chance to play professionally he’ll take it after being in school now for three years at South Carolina, plus one more at a junior college. The talk right now is if he doesn’t get that chance professionally then he’ll likely be back at South Carolina.
--We’ll have more from a 2021 class perspective next week (including some interviews hopefully with some potential draft guys) but the key guys in the class to watch over the draft are: Cooper Kinney, Michael Parks, Michael Braswell, Thad Ector, Vytas Valincius.
Kinney is someone surging up draft boards and there are projections he could sneak into the compensatory first round or second. I’m very confident Parks will not make it to campus and both Braswell and Ector have been upfront in saying it would take a lot to make them forgo college.
