Culture shock for Mcllwain.....

Good for him. He'll get a damned good education at least.
Yeah. He could even go to class with no clothes on if he wanted. Remember reading about some streaker attending class there. They encourage that kind of thing.

My old man was at Carolina then and was smoking a lot of pot but with his clothes on. Last I checked it was 2017 anyway.
Not sure why people expect college kids today to make more mature decisions than they would have 30-40 years ago. We obviously want them to, but be real this is a learning experience for them...a time to be different. Besides hard to get a better education than one you'll receive at Cal-Berkeley.

And I doubt your "old man" has told you everything about his years at Carolina. Lord knows, I wouldn't.

He'll be sure to get a one sided education if he majors in anything other than something stem related. That school could be described as a self proclaimed advancer of free speech or as an oppressor of anyone dissenting to the liberal group think. But ive never been there. So it's only my uninformed opinion. Unfortunately people who disagree with that may fail to understand their point of view is opinion also. Either way good luck

Wonder what his other options were for him to chose UCB does he plan to major in window breaking and mask design? Seriously, I hope it works out for him hope he comes out sane.

My guess is that 80% of all colleges now teach that socialism and protest and not working is the way to go. Just ask Venezuela.
Yes, that's true. We're teaching them to be unemployed. Just like Venezuela where they all went to college, refused to work then devolved into corrupt petro state. Or something.

If you people have such a low opinion of higher education, why are you on this board? Go watch pro ball or NASCAR.

Don't need to watch any ego filled pro ball or lost in time NASCAR. I'm all for higher education, just not don't hurt my feelings progressive rebellions. You know the kind that our speech is permitted but if I disagree with yours I will snub it out. (What does that remind you of?) Most of so called students can't recall any of our nations history or not even taught it.

Most professors in the social sciences and humanities are Leftists, in my opinion. In the Business Departments, most are conservative with the possible exception of Economics.

I have a good friend who is a political science professor. He is an independent thinker, who I think leans toward the liberal side. However, he never lets on in his classes how he feels, so they are constantly trying to figure out if he is liberal or conservative. I think that is the way to teach, regardless of your political persuasion. You want students to learn to form their own opinions.

I have no respect for any professor who tries to convert a student to a certain political philosophy.

I am sure his decision on the school transfer to is based on the playing time he was promised but I would think academics was a considertion. I mean Cal is a top 25 university.

I wish him well

What? You're free to say wherever you like. You can have any opinion you want and share with the 6 billion on this planet and guys will not come to your house from the ministry of truth with black bags. That means, however, that people have the same right to criticize your opinions. Free speech goes both ways.

And most professors couldn't give a damn about converting students to their point of view. They're in academia to follow their own research interests, not indoctrinate kids. If they can get them to do the reading and put for some effort that's a enough.

If i was talented enough to be a top 75 MLB pick projection by scouts and i had figured out my baseball coach was a moron at running a program, who refused to play me and let me develop to become a star and help the team win, i would of transferred to.

Who wants to sit on the bench and lose and not have their skills developed.

Good Luck Brandon! Wish Chad was gone and you had stayed!

First, there are all kinds of professors. In large universities, there are a lot more of the research oriented professors. Many small colleges are more teaching oriented. I believe that you mentioned in a prior thread some time ago that you teach history part time( adjunct) at the University of South Carolina.
Most students are not going to challenge a professor in class.

What Brandon did y'all watch? The one I watched was slow, unathletic, and indecisive. He is nowhere near even a Thomas Jones type baseball player. He obviously played against inferior opponents up there.

Surprised he didn't go to UVA as they could certainly use a quarterback and have one of top baseball programs in the country along with being a top tier academic institution. Would have allowed him to be closer to his Pennsylvania home to so parents could come watch him.

It helps young people, frankly all people, to be exposed to other ways of thinking. Doesn't mean they are going to be "converted". Being challenged should be a part of any good education. I feel bad for the kids who go to places like Liberty University who get almost zero diversity of thought. I also feel bad for folks who get all their news from the Fox Ministry of Truth.

ha haha, they on this board because its a sports board. It has nothing to do with education.

Wish him the best. Appears to be a good young man. Wish he would have stayed around at least to be on the baseball team this year though. Seems with everything that happened with this year's team he might have been a help and he would have gotten a chance to see what he could contribute. Anyway...God's speed Brandon McIlwain.
