Dawn speaks out at the protest

oh and by the way, since 2017 1268 White persons have been killed by police, in that same time frame 667 Black person have been killed by the police.. And statisttics show Blacks commit more crimes by percentage..
I have tried to stay out of the fray on this. However, to see people throwing out raw numbers to try mask the problem is ridiculous. It is correct that more Whites are killed by Police. However, the people that push this stat leave out one large detail. There are 6 Whites to every one Black person. So, the fact that the numbers are even close should be alarming if you are looking at it objectively. Further, crime stats are thrown out there without regard to how differently the two communities are policed. The war on drugs is the most stark illustration of the policing issue. Many people see a young black male as the face of drug dealing. However, white drug use and trafficking is equal to or greater than Black drug use and Trafficking (by percentage). Yet, who is most investigated, arrested, and convicted in the war on drugs? You guessed it, Black people. How many bankers you know arrested for laundering drug money. They are out there. How are the drugs transported. Yea, let's blame that on the Brown people in Central America. However, our society looks over the military and law enforcement forces that allow these drugs to get to certain communities. It's easier to blame the black kid ranging from 14-32 in most cases and call it a day. With that mentality in our society, it makes it easy for a George Floyd situation to occur. Yes, Mr. Floyd appeared intoxicated. However, he wasn't treated like a man that was having a hard time because he lost his job due to the Coronavirus. He was just another Black Guy who deserved it because they are up to no good you know.

Oh okay so you are saying we throw out stats and just guess based on certain peoples theories of what is happening??? Gotcha... So White Drug use is greater percentage wise than Black??? Is that a Fact or your theory?? All i can go by are stats.. Me not being black, (Although my ex wife is mixed) certainly have a different perspective than you, however, all i can go by is statistics.. Not what I think is happening... And your reasoning that Black neighborhhoods are policed more is because of Racism in ALL police forces as Obama's adminstration said?? I am not picking a fight, i respect your opinion, nd just asking if that is what you are implying.

Why? Honestly, this seems like the elephant in the room and until it is dealt with, nothing will change. Is it just a false perception? Are they more likely a threat? Do police officers have more trouble with one sex over the other, one race over another, one age group over another, one nationality over another?
Regardless, no law abiding citizen should have to worry about being shot/killed by the police.
Tell that to Philando Castille or even George Floyd. Even if some does commit a crime you don't deserve to die for it, especially when you're following orders. From Jim Crow to present, what has the police or even judicial system done for the black community for them to trust them. Some officers attempt to get off because they are afraid of an unarmed black man but when it's the other way around these black individuals either die or spend a substantial time in jail forever continuing the cycle. I think getting more trust from those in power will go a long way in progressing this issue for the better.

NOONE, that i have seen on here EVER said that George Floyd deserved to DIE!! So dont even go there!!!

It's ironic b/c they are the closest to history, unlike these knucklehead opportunists on the streets.

And white America is doing no favors to anyone with crap like this:

Many older black folks have fought the good fight for decades. It’s time for younger folks to take up the fight. Many are doing so and that’s a good thing.

The great majority of people the age of my children aren’t going to accept racist attitudes from anyone or the denial of opportunity for black people. Just not happening.

You should check again, I never stated that. The previous poster said that no law abiding citizen should be afraid of getting shot/killed by the police. Last I check George Floyd waa getting arrested for a non violent crime and didn't resist arrest and yet he died at the hands of an officer a questionable record of an abuse of power.

you need to check again.. that is exactly what you insinuated!! You said that George Floyd didnt deserve to die for committing a crime especially while obeying orders..

Totally agree.

Until they grow older and have families and realize little has changed to spite herculean efforts. We were all socialists when we were young....Hope something changes, but this has been the cycle forever.

Context is key, I never implied the poster had that sentiment. George Floyd the person didn't deserve to die and that in itself. Which is why perfectly law abiding citizens who look like him are reasonably afraid of the police, which was the original point.

If I'm stopped for speeding I'll get a ticket but if my friend of color is stopped he'll not only get a ticket but his car will probably be searched.

Yesterday on TV we saw a lady of color trying to protect her store from looters. When the cops arrived they assumed she was a looter and pinned her against the wall and were close to cuffing her before someone intervened. It's called racial profiling and it happens all the time.

You have no clue do you??

I didn't say they do. I don't think anyone does. A police officer shouldn't shoot or kill ANYONE unless they are in fear for their life, just like anyone else. They should be held accountable, just like EVERYONE else. IMHO, the people calling for looters to be shot is insane. You don't shoot someone for stealing a tv, you arrest them.
If there is a problem, it can't be fixed without looking at the "why", Looking at videos, I wonder if people are being taught differently than when I grew up. My parents would have kicked my ass if I talked back to a police officer. Fighting a police officer wouldn't even have crossed my mind. It would have been "yes sir", "no sir" and I certainly wasn't a saint when I was younger, may have been in trouble once or twice or....more.

Not saying throw out stats. However, if you are going to use them, put them out there fully and be able to contextualize them. Be able to contextualize how laws were written to create softer punishments for White offenders (Cocaine/Crack Cocaine). If you can't do that you become part of the problem. I may be coming down too hard in this area, however I have practiced Criminal Defense Law for 28 years, and taught as an Adjunct Criminal Justice Professor for 13 years. Nothing gets me going more than the simple Blacks commit more crimes argument. Oh, and you are free to fact check my drug use argument. I just didn't provide stats because I am working from home and don't have the time to get in an in-depth argument.

Disagree. I was more conservative when I was younger.

my children are much more liberal than I ever was at their age. I had 5 black folks and 1 Latino in My graduating class in high school. I still live in a fairly rural area. There are more minority kids in my sons algebra class than was in my high school graduating class.

I never witnessed an interracial dating couple in high school. It’s basically routine now in high school.

re the bolded - I was as well.
Although I went to predominantly black schools growing up, I don't recall interracial dating either. If there was, it was very minimal.

real conservatism ended in 1988.. that's when it also ended with me

To me, liberal/conservative is defined by big government/small government. How Do you define the ideologies?

Just curious but how do you see it as a race versus income issue?

Cool. But you're also a bit of a unicorn on this site.

Yet, here we are. All of the programs and $$$ and the nation has never been more polarized....Same under Obama.

GOP POTUS and Congress has been spending money like a drunk sailor and growing the government for the last 20 years... fiscally there is very little difference between the Republicans and Democrats

Reading some of these comments by Dawn, I just want to say that I support her, but she is way off base. Nothing to do with Trump even. She doesn't seem to get that the rioters and looters aren't the ones looking for positive change. Those people are protesting civilly. The rioters and looters are people that just want to destroy the government and are looking for an excuse and people who are looking to rob because they want to get paid, an people who just think it's fun to destroy stuff when other people are doing it. None of them care about ballot boxes. They don't even care about George Floyd, many of them have never even heard of the guy.
You may be right here. But given her stature, she's probably exceedingly cautious about how she phrases things.

I actually see it as both. In my experience, law enforcement jacks up poor Whites the same way. However, Whites, except for the immediate family of victims, don't complain. I can only speculate, but it's almost as if the White cases are seen as collateral damage in the necessary goal of maintaining order. Blacks complain because they know that type of damage is coming to their doorstep first. The poor treatment of people that you don't see as a political threat or financial threat is nothing new. You see it in the medical profession. You see it in the legal profession as governments spend twice as much to convict someone as to defend them. So, poverty, race, and the advent of more aggressive, right wing politics is all mixed in there to make life more volatile than before. When people constantly hear I can say what I want to say no matter how disrectful it might be, then how long will it be before someone does terrible things because that was what they wanted to do.

A few things.

Apparently there was a history with this person. That’s why one player specifically reached out to him to ask him his opinion.

I am no expert but the Black Lives Matter movement is not a suggestion that all lives don’t matter. It’s a realization that for way too long all lives mattered, except for many black people.

Many of us might not understand all that this issue involves, but it’s important we start listening and trying to understand it.
Yes, I have heard that the BLMers most definitely do not suggest that all lives don't matter. It's just that if you don't know from where they are coming, the BLM statement can be offputting. I wish that they were able to come up with a "better" (better, IMO) statement/name than BLM. For all I know, maybe they did try, and BLM was the best they could come up with..

That wasn’t my question.

I just heard 13 people have died in the riots. I am going to just say it. Yes cops are killing people and they need to be stopped. But the rioters are killing people and the protesters that are out on the street, even though they are trying to do it right and be peaceful, are accomplices to these crimes by being out there so that bad people can hide among them. They need to do their protests on the internet until things simmer down. They should organize a really big march on DC in like a month. It would be more effective anyway.

Your line about protests online sparked a thought, would it be possible for the government to take action and shut down social media for 2 weeks? It seems to be fanning the flames. I'm sure the left would fight it but it would allow things to calm down. People are less aggressive with their speech in person.

This first scenario is racial profiling and it happens all the time, and it's terrible. The second scenario doesn't sound like racial profiling. It sounds like the cops came to the store and saw a bunch of people looting and fighting and they they had no way of immediately knowing who anyone was so they just detained everyone until they could find out who they were.

Absolutely not.

Sounds like something China would do.

At least 13 dead from rioting. Dawn owes the families of those murdered an apology for implying murder is just "people venting their frustrations". A public official should know better than to make a statement in public while events are happening. Talk to your players immediately, in private. In public, delay a statement until things calm down, and you know something is not going to come back to bite you in the rear, like this has. I had tons of respect for her until this.

Are you concerned about the 20 black deaths that occurred in Chicago in 12 hours? Should there be some protest rallies there?

Yep, I am upset about that too as I'm sure most people are. Don't know how that's relevant to this conversation. You can be upset about more than one thing and try improve society. There's already multiple and continuing efforts(including protests) to stop the senseless killings within the community. But one of the biggest differences about the outrage, is those in gang related crimes are often brought to justice, meanwhile the same can't be said about those in a place authority whose job (in which they chose) is to serve and protect others. The way I see it, improving the quality of the police force and it's relationship with the black community could have long term benefits in help diminish the power of gangs in certain cities.

If you want no police or neutered police with no protection what you'll get is gang take over or vigilantes and that won't be pretty. Be careful what you ask for.
