Is there any mechanism whereby we can discuss the intersection of politics/current events and sports

National debt
Free trade
Family values
Government bailouts
National debt yes. Family values still there. Government bailouts? The 08 crisis was unique. The virus is unique. I don’t deny republicans are quicker to spend money not in the budget but far less than democrats. Free trade equals (or should) fair trade. Unfair trade is an issue Obama and Bush complained about but did NOTHING. This president is trying to do something at least

Society generally moves left especially socially

not long ago large numbers of republicans were against gay marriage. The opposition is still in the party platform I think. A candidate running on that today wouldn’t make it out of the Republican primary

no democrat would even bring up the idea today.

but fiscally too. The tea party was against deficits and bailouts. The Tea Party fizzled. Republicans have now embraced deficits and bailouts (they always embraced them but not publicly). Today, republicans have silently embraced deficits and debt and no one believes they even care about it anymore. Mick Mulvaney, as a trump’s Chief of Staff, said exactly that.
All correct. If they didn't, they wouldn't be a party anymore.

Family values still there? LOLRollLaugh

VP Pence in the 90s, said that you should never sacrifice your morals for election victories. He was referring to Clinton.

2 decades later he was running on the ticket with a guy who bragged about grabbing women by their private parts without their consent, bragged about trying to sleep with a happily married woman, and was openly embraced by the party that proclaimed family values matter more than anything.

part of that failure came from Increased scrutiny and publicity that Many of those proclaiming family values the loudest And strongest usually had awful skeletons in their own private lives.

Fox News rode the family values train a long time before finally giving it up, All the while They secretly paid tens of millions to all the women that Bill O’Reilly had sexually harassed, and while host after host was caught in adulterous affairs.

I'll ignore the childish name calling for now, and answer the part you seem to have missed.

In your example, you compare people choosing different stores based on cost or quality of products to people choosing stores based on something that has nothing to do with the products purchased.

You're right in that we have the freedom to choose, but you're way off base trying to claim they both represent "cancel culture".
Neither represent cancel culture. Boycotts are not cancel culture. Cancel culture is simply when individuals are targeted for an unpopular opinion. It isn't right or just to dox, and demand termination from employment, or issue death threats to a person's family, over an opinion you dont like. That is cancel culture. Arranging a boycott of a store because the owner is a racist? That's a boycott. Take Chic-Fil-A. They were the target of LGBTQ boycott (and may still be, for all I know), which is not "cancel culture", but a boycott. Asking for people to not patronize a business for any reason is just trying to get an organized boycott to get your message heard. So when I was arguing against "cancel culture" earlier, it was about the very narrow definition of perpetually offended people trying to destroy a person's personal life because they didn't like his/her opinion. It's toxic, it's dangerous, and it's wrong. Getting people to stand for something, vote for someone or boycott a business is nothing but good old fashioned capitalism and organized protest at work. No matter which people are doing it.

Because they saw the alternative

Probably so

Just evidence that things move in a more liberal direction over time.
Sure they do. It's the very definition of liberal. Liberals today are not pushing for the same things liberals 50 years ago were. The pendulum swings and is always moving towards liberalism in general by definition. What defines liberal changes though as what was once old will be new again.

Right, they justified their hypocrisy

as if they never considered that other people might do the same thing on occasion.

see, if you are going to be hypocritical, just admit it. At least it’s more honest that way.

and don’t expect other people to do what you refuse to do.

I was referring to society- all of society moves in a liberal direction.

People were given two options by the parties. A guy who says a lot of crass stuff and a very compromised political gangster. We all made our choices. Are we all evil or hypocritical for voting for one of them? As I've said, you take the one that is least disgusting in that case.

I guess I disagree that boycotting can be part of a cancel culture. I dont think all boycotts are, but i think some can be ridiculous enough to fall in that category.

it is interesting that yours is the first partisan polical post in this thread at the same time you are complaing about our "hyper political society".
Hyperpolitical activity belongs on discussion boards, not in athletic games. There, back on track now?

You shouldn’t be calling anyone a hypocrite and no I’m not expecting you to see that

Yet, Democrats admit they have no family values and have never promoted them.

No thinking person would vote for a Democrat.

Unless you are in favor of killing babies, anti-Christian, anti-Military, in favor of choosing your own sex, anti-family values, anti-business, anti-capitalism, pro-socialism, pro-communism, pro-taxes, and the list goes on and on and on and.........................

How can any family person, especially those with children, go for this crap?

Yes, and Trump needs to be reelected so the country does not completely collapse.
This is why there won't be any civil political dialogue. People like this using fear mongering to influence votes.

No, it won't. Our country isn't as weak as you'd like to think. I'm sure you said the same thing in 2008. The country works best when there is a mixture of both republican and democratic ideas.

It didn’t start in 2016 it started with Newt Gingrich holding his moral superiority to Bill Clinton. I guess sleeping with your secretary as opposed to an intern are two completely different things.

Of course we also know from Junior’s divorce that Fox News is literally in bed with the administration.

You must've missed the first page of this thread. I was told trump supporters were capable of civil political dialogue. Guess they were wrong.

More fear mongering.

A Jr High teenage girl would marvel at this hysteria. The country will collapse if we don't reelect the biggest pathological liar to ever occupy the WH. It'll just go poof, now that's plain comical.

To be fair, that's not restricted only to the right. Isn't Trump a "threat to democracy" etc etc every time his name is brought up?

Trump ought to get Newt to be his running mate. Their campaign slogan could be "Two men, six wives & we screwed around on all of um,
"now vote for us, the family values team"

Here is an excellent reason not to vote for Biden. Businesses are suffering due to the pandemic, rioting and looting, and Biden will raise their taxes.

Not from me. I keep it simple. He's a lying turd. The turd part is subjective, the lying part is not

You mean Trump, Biden or both?

Seriously, you may think you don't raise the hysteria level like others, but it's hard to point fingers when both sides are neck deep in "nation will collapse/nazi/russian" hysteria.

How do you justify Biden's lies and his participation in Obama's corruption?

Trump is not perfect, but he is the best thing going at this time. We need him now, more than ever.

I don't have any idea of what Bidens participation in Obama's corruption is. If he did something wrong, when does the trial start? I mean it's been 3.5 years since he was vice president. How come nothing has happened? Same with Hillary, seems she would be in federal prison if you listen to trump, yet she's not.
Sounds like more trump rhetoric. At some point most everybody becomes a criminal, a liar, a dope, etc especially after people leave the administration. Somebody ask him the other day, after his comments on Bolton, why he kept hiring dopes & liars ( after constantly repeating he knows the best people ?) His response was to walk away.
