Money better at Clemson?

So Will Taylor says he will go to Clemson. This is from all accounts a gamble that he will make more than his $2.5-3 million signing bonus if he goes to college. However, how many two sport athletes really end up that good in football and baseball these days? We are long past the days when you can play both unless you are an incredibly rare athlete. For the kid’s sake, I hope he is.

My guess is Dabo convinced the family that he will be a 1st round draft pick in football as a QB.

But statically, he will not be able to make a major impact in both sports and he likely will have his performance negatively impacted.

MLB Draft is over

Gamecocks had eight players and three signees over three days get drafted (signees italicized):

Cooper Kinney, Tampa Bay Rays (Round 1, pick 34)
Brett Kerry, Los Angeles Angels (Round 5, pick 141)
Brady Allen, Miami Marlins (Round 5, pick 149)
Thomas Farr, Cincinnati Reds (Round 5, pick 150)
Hunter Parks, Cincinnati Reds (Round 8, pick 240)
Brannon Jordan, Milwaukee Brewers (Round 9, pick 267)
Andrew Peters, Los Angeles Angels (Round 10, pick 291)
Wes Clarke, Milwaukee Brewers (Round 10, pick 297)
Andrew Baker, Philadelphia Phillies (Round 11, pick 325)
Daniel Lloyd, Baltimore Orioles (Round 14, pick 407)
Julian Bosnic, San Fransisco Giants (Round 16, 476)

Should have some notes up later today. Biggest question marks from the draft class are Baker and Bosnic with some guys maybe wanting to sign FA deals.

Baseball - George Will

Interesting thoughts from Will about needed changes to the MLB game.

The number of strikeouts is way up as is the length of the game and the time between pitches. All for various reasons. The pace has slowed to a crawl.

Some possible solutions:

Move the mound back a foot. Whitey Ford was 5'10". Today, many pitchers are 6'4". Of course, this would take years to implement fully.

A 20 second pitch clock.

Requiring four players on the infield or 2 on each side when the pitcher releases the ball.

Require the pitcher to step off the mound before throwing to first.

I Think they a worth considering.

Thoughts? Other ideas?
