OT: Anybody got any good new music recommendations? Love the Greta Van Fleet referral several months

The Dead South
Lyrics - mama said she's my brother's daughter, I guess that makes her my cousin. But she needs sweet loving anyway

In small doses only, Gothic Country
Pine Box Boys - Will you remember me
Ol Savannah - Bury me on the mountain

There's a group that's homebased out of Charleston that Rolling Stone listed as one of the Top 10 new groups, The Artisanals they kind of have a similar sound to the Shinns or War on Drugs. You've got some pretty eclectic tastes. If you like John Hiatt, if you haven't already got "Slow Turning", Stolen Moments" or "Little Head" those are great albums. I started listening to John Hiatt in the 80s because I kept hearing these great songs done by Buddy Guy, Roseanne Cash, Albert Lee and Bonnie Raitt that he wrote. His albums were hard to find back then. It was probably late 80s before I found any of his albums. He also did an album with Ry Cooder and Nick Lowe called "Little Village" that is excellent.

Yes, have every album you mentioned! He put out three albums out in a row, not one bad song! Also about that time Jim Lauderdale did the same thing! If you've never delved deep into Lauderdale, he's one of the best singer/songwriters out there! This one will rip your heart out!

Speaking of Lauderdale, he's playing at Albino Skunk this year.

One of the guys in The Artisanals - the guitarist maybe - used to be in Susto, another good band to come out of Charleston. Also like the High Divers from Charleston.

Youtube has them recording at Daytrotter Studios and they are really good. Since you're a Jeff Tweedy fan do you like Golden Smog and by extension the Jayhawks? I think Gary Louris is one of the most underrated musicians and songwriters out there.

Hollywood Town Hall as good an album as I own!

A classic. Smile, Sound of Lies and Rainy Day Music are also really good, different sound than Town Hall they were recorded after Mark Olsen left the band. Mad Man off of Rainy Day Music is great, has Stephen Stills son Chris doing background vocals.

The last two are both surprisingly good also. Carry you to Safety is one of the best songs I heard in 2018.

There's a fairly obscure 1970's British band I like, Be Pop Deluxe, great guitarist and their music shows a lot of variety both influenced and influential. I would start with the full Modern Music Suite, go to Sister Seagull, and then Jets at Dawn. That's a pretty good sample.

I've listened to the last two, but I need to buy them. If I'm not mistaken the last one is comprised of songs Gary Louris wrote that other artists had previously covered. Sidenote Tim O'Regan from the Jayhawks put out a solo album that was really good a few years back.

An album that`I've been wanting to check out is the Ray Davies collaboration with the Jayhawks, if you've got it or listened to it let me know what you think.

Lastly in the category of bands that should have been more successful commercially than they were, do you like the Freddy Jones Band?

Right in your backyard ... Marcus King Band from Greenville . Especially if your into Allman Brothers or Blues and Soul . I’m a big jamband/ funk guy so my list is a little different but they are all worth a listen :

The Fritz who are from Asheville incidentally
The Main Squeeze
Lettuce- for Nola Funk fans
JJ Gray and Mofro- for southern rock / soul
Brandon “taz” Neidemier- teenage Guitar god
Tedeshi Trucks Band
Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds
Gary Clark Jr
Umphrey’s Mcgee- check out the album Zonkey , it’s a funny record
The Revivalists- One of the best live bands I’ve ever seen

For a few off the beaten path bands I’ve seen that lately that are amazing .. Check out “Come Back Alice” from Tampa , “The Groove Orient” from Jacksonville and especially if your into the harder classic rock/ zeppelin “The Owsley Brothers” from Santa Rosa Beach Fl . Hope this helps .

Lettuce is bad ass.

Just started listening to the Revivalists as well. Good stuff.

Yep, I've got an old Freddy Jones CD, love it! Have not heard the Ray Davies collab.

Yes they are !! So happy for the Revivalists . I’ve known and played the same venues with those guys for years and they are amazing guys . They’ve earned everything they have . Listen to all their early albums , they’re fantastic . Yeah lettuce is one of my favorites . Any of Eric Krasno’s projects are fantastic. Do you listen to Umphrey’s ?? All my buddy’s that are classic rock and metal fan’s I’ve turned on to Umphrey’s. Probably the best live band I’ve ever seen . Love them

Wow, I didn't think anyone else had heard of these guys. I had their Life in the Air Age which included the song Sister Seagull. The guitarist was Bill Nelson.

Deep Tracks on Sirius, .when I would hear their songs it would sound like an obscure song by a known group. Then I heard the Modern Music suite and was blown away.

I play in a jam/ funk band called New Earth Army and a blues rock cover band called “The Good Lookings” (I didn’t pick that name Haha) . The New Earth Army stuff should be on Spotify, iTunes and Soundcloud . We have three original Albums: “Action” “Musikisinu” and “Rebirth” . We play mostly in the Panhandle and South Florida . The best part is being able to open for so many awesome bands . Got to open for the Revivalists twice , Neville Brothers, Dumstaphunk, JJ Grey , the Main Squeeze , Butch Trucks freight train band . It’s a good time!! I love it . Count my blessings everyday !! If I hear of any awesome local bands head your way I’ll give you a heads up . Another awesome band to check out is The Fritz from Asheville . They play in SC and NC a lot . Check them out .

Hey bro I just saw the Fritz are gonna be in Charleston on 2/5 . They are touring with a band called Pigeons playing Ping Pong, who are AMAZING . I think they are in Charlotte on 1/26 . Just saw that on their calendar and wanted to give you a heads up . Not sure the venue . If it’s in Charleston it’s probably at the Pour House . Go check them out .
