Thanks bro , I appreciate it . Wow those guys are awesome !!! Anybody that covers Curtis Mayfield are on my list . I’ll definitely check them out . I didn’t see any dates in Columbia . I saw a few dates in Asheville and Boone and that one in Charleston . I’ll keep an eye out and if I see any Columbia dates I’ll let you know !!

This was such a cool post that it made me finally decide to rejoin FGF. I was formerly known in these parts as Freekoffhisleash. Kept trying to sign back in and couldnt remember the password. Site kept telling me it was emailing me a new password, but the email would never come through...So...wrote a list of the bands mentioned I wasnt familiar with. Some of them are fantastic. If you havent heard Matthew Ryan or The Summer Kills (Matthew Ryan+Hammock), check them out, as well as John Moreland and Kevin Salem. Oh, and add Daughter to the list. Pretty dark, but great stuff. Their videos are like modern art.

I am always looking for new music but new, good music seems harder and harder to find these days. I have pretty eclectic tastes. Nothing worse than someone who wont open up their musical horizons. About the only thing I just cant do is the new, modern "country" and modern hip-hop and rap - and pretty much anything popular and on the charts sucks out loud. Guess I am getting old because I dont think I know anyone in the top 20. Thank God, my girls listen to what I listen to for the most part. My neighbor told me that her daughter and mine were listening to music and her daughter told mine to listen to One Direction. She did for about 30 seconds and then told them they "needed to go in the other direction!"

Freek, check this album out, think you'll like! Little on the dark side but reminds me of Matthew Ryan stuff.

I dig it! Thanks bro. Will be listening more to that. Yea, kinda similar to Matthew Ryan, without the 3 packs a day voice! MR is a good friend of mine that I have known for a long time. Wish he was better known than he is, because the cat is one of the best songwriters I have ever heard. Thanks for the new suggestion. Will definitely be listening to more of this cat.

Freek, really liked that Kevin Salem if you haven't ever listened to Matthew Sweet check out Girlfriend, Altered Beast and/or 100% Fun!

I have heard, and used to listen to Matthew Sweet, but its been soooo long since I have, I cant even remember how he sounded. Will have to go back and relisten. Listened to Sarah Shook and the Disarmers this morning and am really digging her! "I am drinkin water tonight cuz I drank all the whiskey this mornin'..." LOL. That's an awesome alt-country line..

Another pretty good new one is Glorietta, also The Delines, a little softer r & b feel with a great female vocalist!

I used to have sweet dreams when i was poor, i got a little dough now, don't dream anymore! That's a pretty good lyric off that Rhett Miller album.

back, can't listen enough!

It's not new ('Carnival' was released in 2004) but, give Potato Moon a listen. It's different.

POTATO MOON is a contemporary alternative group from Grand Rapids, Michigan and is made up of siblings Ben, Jane and Laura Stancil along with father Phil Stancil. "Carnival" is their third album and follow-up to "Midnight Water". It highlights Potato Moon's unique vocal harmonies and diverse songwriting. The group started as a folk-bluegrass group but has, over time, spread it's musical wings defining a new sound which is hard to categorize but easy to listen to.

Carnival is loosely based on a traveling show. It's main character is a young man living in a small town who is eventually kidnapped and made to be a tightrope walker. He escapes and, while on the run, hears the voice of God and the angels in the song Hold On. The songs on this album are as diverse as the acts in a traveling circus. Don't Open Up Your Eyes, and Will I Fall evoke similar musical colors as vocal songbirds Norah Jones or Eva Cassidy while Hangtown and Big Rain Fire sound like the country blues musings of Mark Knopfler. The lead vocal on Hold On is reminiscent of the late Tempations singer David Ruffin while Hey Yeah, Carnival and Sing Sweet Baby are molded on a moderate tempo swing. Carnival as a whole is a unique blend of catchy hooks, silvery vocals, and lush instrumentation. Enjoy.

Excellent major label debut guys, kind of reminds me of Mavis a little with some Dolly thrown in, a little poppier than I'm used to, but not a bad song on the album!

Yola worked with The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach to create Walk Through Fire, with Auerbach producing and the pair co-writing the album's songs alongside guest writers like Bobby Wood, Pat McLaughlin and Dan Penn. They also assembled an impressive team of studio musicians, including bassist Dave Roe (Johnny Cash), pianist Wood (Elvis Presley) and legendary harmonica player Charlie McCoy. Vince Gill lends backing harmonies to the soul-baring torch song "Keep Me Here," while bluegrass greats Molly Tuttle, Ronnie McCoury and Stuart Duncan add a laid-back twang to the title track.

If you're a fan of Greta Van Fleet, check out Rivals Sons. On their early albums they were borrowing a lot from Zeppelin like GVF, but they've kinda created their own thing now.

I just saw them and the Sheepdogs in Asheville last week. The Sheepdogs are a Canadian band that has a Southern Rock vibe that is pretty legit.

If you're looking for something local to Columbia, check out the McKenzie Butler Band. They kinda have that Sister Sparrow vibe and they're starting to make a name for themselves.

I want to check out more of all 3 of these....Sounds pretty good. Glad this thread is continuing. I was playing around on Spotify this morning and getting frustrated because I need something new and didnt have anything. Thanks to you guys, I have a few more!

Missed seeing the Sheepdogs by one night at the burton us open vail a few years back, but did catch bright light social hour and they were excellent!

One of my favorite local bands. McKenzie is from SC and has an AMAZING voice. She will have you feeling every note. Good songwriter too. And her bandmates can all really play. They play several times a week seems like; go check it out if you see their name

These guys are a new find and it’s sad because they have been around forever . Great Canadian Progressive Rock band . The Vocalist Lead Guitarist, Ian Thornley , is a freak of nature . Should be illegal to be that talented . Definitely not for everybody , but if you appreciate amazingly technical musicianship check out all of their stuff . Amazing band
