I love how a lot of the same posters that say the media can’t be trusted post news articles as proof.

not saying they are incorrect sometimes but it’s just really funny

It’s always ironic.

it’s also very predictable which side they come down on.

I’ve also noticed that you don’t see really anybody defending the confederate flag anymore like you did only about three years ago. they defend everything around it but they don’t defend it specifically. It’s too toxic now, which In and of itself is remarkable progress.

Nascar caused this problem by allowing the #43 car to decorate the car with the slogan. Nobody else but Nascar.

Jan. 22: Smollett reports to police receiving a threatening letter sent to the Fox studio where ‘Empire’ is filmed, containing threatening language and laced with a powdery substance investigators believe was likely crushed-up Tylenol.

Jan. 29: Smollett is allegedly attacked at 2 a.m. near his apartment in Chicago. Two masked assailants poured "an unknown chemical substance" on him, possibly bleach, and wrapped a rope around his neck, he told police. In a follow-up interview with police, Smollett alleges that the attackers yelled “MAGA country,” a reference to President Donald Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan.

Jan. 30: Chicago police announce in a tweet that they are seeking two “persons of interest” who were captured on surveillance video near the scene and around the time of the alleged attack.

Jan. 31: Smollett's family releases and emotional statement describing the alleged attack as a hate crime. "In the early hours of Tuesday morning, our beloved son and brother, Jussie, was the victim of a violent and unprovoked attack. We want to be clear, this was a racial and homophobic hate crime," the family wrote in the statement to ABC News. "Jussie has told the police everything from the very beginning. His story has never changed, and we are hopeful they will find these men and bring them to justice."

Feb. 1: Smollett releases a new statement thanking his fans and reiterating that his account of the alleged attack has remained consistent. "I am working with authorities and have been 100% factual and consistent on every level," he said in the statement. "Despite my frustrations and deep concern with certain inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have been spread, I still believe that justice will be served.”

Feb. 2: Smollett makes his first appearance on stage since the alleged attack, performing at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, California.
"Regardless of what anyone else says, I will only stand for love," Smollett said, tearing up before beginning his set. "We hope that you all stand with us."

Feb. 4: Chicago police release the initial incident report about the alleged attack on Smollett. The report reveals that Smollett was apparently reluctant to report the attack, and that when police arrived at his home to interview him, he was still wearing the rope around his neck. The report states that a 60-year-old friend of Smollett called the police on his behalf and said the actor "did not want to report offense however he believed it to be in the best interest to."

Smollett said the attack happened at around 2 a.m. as he was leaving a Subway restaurant. He told police that two attackers gained his attention by yelling racial and homophobic slurs and began to beat him "about the face with their hands," the report said. "The primary aggressor was wearing a black mask concealing any facial features and both offenders were dressed in black," according to the report. "The victim does not remember any other distinguishing features of the offenders, or in which direction they fled," it added.

Feb. 14: In an exclusive interview with "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts, Smollett said he was heartbroken when he found out that people questioned the details of his story. He defended himself against skeptics who pointed out that it wasn't until a follow-up interview with the police that he mentioned that the assailants yelled "MAGA Country!" at him. He also complained about erroneous reports that he had told police that the attackers were actually wearing red MAGA hats.

(MORE: GMA Exclusive: Jussie Smollett heartbroken over criticism after attack: 'You don't even want to see the truth')
"For me, the main thing was the idea that I somehow switched up my story, you know? And that somehow maybe I added a little extra trinket, you know, of the MAGA thing," Smollett said. "I didn't need to add anything like that. They called me a f----, they called me a n----. There's no which way you cut it. I don't need some MAGA hat as the cherry on top of some racist sundae."

In the ABC News interview, Smollett also confirmed reports that he was initially reluctant to contact the police or handover his cellphone to help with the investigation.

"They wanted me to give my phone to the tech for three to four hours. I'm sorry but -- I'm not gonna do that," the singer said. "Because I have private pictures and videos and numbers: my partner's number, my family's number, my cast mate's number, my friends' numbers, my private emails, my private songs, my private voice memos."

The same day the interview aired, Smollett is re-interviewed by Chicago police investigators. By evening, police sources confirmed that they obtained search warrants and raided the homes of the two individuals, recovering bleach, shoes, electronics and other items.

Feb. 15: Chicago police announce that they have identified and are questioning the two "persons of interest" captured on a surveillance video.

By midday, a CPD spokesman tells ABC News that the two 'persons of interest' are, in fact, under arrest, and acknowledge that the pair has "a relationship with" Smollett. In an unusual move for an ongoing investigation, police officials who had originally described the two as 'persons of interest' begin describing them as "potential suspects." But by late that evening, investigators changed course and announced that the two men have been released without charges.

I had this really great table, I’ll see if I can find it on my computer, it shows the different “ages” of progress where certain things like women’s suffrage, Catholicism, civil rights, segregation - were made “non issues” for politicians because it was not viable for them to remain in office while still defending them

Yes progressivism happens over time, but it happens

10 years ago a republican would have had a problem getting elected in South Carolina saying anything negative about the confederate flag

today it would be very difficult for a state wide officeholder to win election saying anything positive about the confederate flag

Just look at gay marriage. The speed with which that has changed has been at warp speed.

Oh yeah for sure, it’s amazing. And the people on the wrong side have some amazing mental gymnastics chops

I remember on WVOC when Keven Cohen worked there talking about the flag and it was such a hot topic. Being WVOC and right wing, they’d have 75% of callers saying the supported the flag.

Today, it would be 25% or less And even those In “support”would say something like “I didn’t like the flag but I thought the public should have voted on it”

Again. Treating all people like actual people just can't be a bad thing. EVER.

I don't care about Bubba Wallace. The Confederate Flag was banned from racing because it was offensive to one driver. I don't like the Confederate Flag and what it represents but I respect their right to fly the flag. Just like I don't like people kneeling for the Anthem but it's their right. Bubba got it banned when many fans at NASCAR flew the flag out of tradition or whatever the reason they displaced the flag. So there you are.

Excellent message for the left to think about and consider.
No, an excellent message for everyone to think about and consider. The divisiveness and pointing of fingers in the blame game is exactly the problem in this country today. Not just racial divides, but political divides, gender divides, religious divides. We need to stop being so angry with each other and stop pointing fingers at someone else, and start changing ourselves. People could generally get along without the constant hate and fighting. We should aspire to that.

As a conservative white male in the south, the most racist people I know are bleeding heart liberals that can’t stand Donald Trump but will drop an N bomb at any chance they get. THAT is why I take this with a bit of skepticism

Agree, it is something to aspire to but the left is going to make sure it doesn't happen.

Could be a hoax, could even be a misunderstanding.. but Bubba hasn't done anything at this point to deserve being compared to Jussie Smollett. Keep it classy and wait for more information to come out, that'd be my suggestion.

I've been down here almost my whole life and never met anyone like that.

The confederate flag is offensive to a lot of people, not just one driver. One driver spoke up about it the most.

the difference is NASCAR has banned it. You don’t get in with it. The NFL hasn't banned fans from kneeling or talking during the anthem.

Hmm. I know a lot of southerners, rednecks and liberals. I don’t know any that “drop an N Bomb”

the only person I know that does that is one of my retired uncles who is in his 80s now. He’s no liberal. Not sure he is much of anything these days.

So what? Your experience differs.

I didn't know who Bubba Wallace was until I saw this article.
Same way I didn't know who Juissie Smollet was until his buffoonery.
Fake hate crimes are much more common than you think. Recent studies have show as many as 2/3 are fabricated, numbering in the hundreds in 2019 alone.
But of course it is an election cycle, time for the Dems to blow their typical dog-whistle to scare minorities into voting for them.

But it isn't offensive to a lot of NASCAR fans and because one driver doesn't like the flag no one else is allowed to display the flag. Again, I'm personally opposed to the flying of the Confederate Flag but I respect those people who want to fly the flag.

It's going to be interesting how it all works out for NASCAR.

You are kidding right! The left doesn't aspire to anything but their own agenda and anyone that doesn't aspire to that same philosophy is a racist.
Stop being divisive. Instead of pointing at a group and saying "they do this" work on fixing the problems. It is not productive to point to liberals and say "you are just wrong." Then they point back at you and say "no, you are wrong and this is why!" And you're back to quibbling like 6 year olds on a playground talking about who's older brother could whoop the other. You're all so ingrained in this ideology that you can't see that you're both wrong and too unwilling to bend a whit to hear what others who don't believe as you do have to say. It's not a political problem. It's a people problem. And the divide is DEEPLY ingrained in many in this forum, and in the US in general. Keep fighting. Go ahead. Keep electing idiots like Trump or Biden. The country will continue to go to shit until there is a real revolution anyhow. The system may just be so broken only a full reset and start from zero can fix some of the problems. Just waiting for the eventual "aging out" of curmudgeons who are unwilling to change the ways of thinking that got us to where we are to begin with may take too long, especially when they've taught their children to be just as stupid as they are.

The funny thing for me, growing up in SC I always made fun of the Confederate flag. Thought it was redneck and trashy and poked fun at those who were proud of it. It never scared or offended me. It was just stupid.

It wasn’t until the white liberals started getting everyone worked up about it and telling everyone to be offended by it that my view changed.

Oh, I still think it’s stupid, but it doesn’t affect me to see it being flown.

I think you pointed your finger in the last sentence. Argument defeats itself

Fine. I quit. I'm trying to be a voice of reason, and rather than take that for what it's worth, people want to beat their chests about political affinity and bitch about semantics. **** y'all I'm out.

It’s offensive to NASCAR. That’s what matters. It’s their rule. Good for them.

It offended a sizable portion of South Carolina citizens. It always did. It represented an idea that treated many of our citizens as less than human beings.

anyone getting people worked up about the flag did right. Many of our fellow black S.C. residents tried for decades to get it down and were ignored.

David Beasley tried to bring it down in the 90s but could Not get republicans to go along with him. As a result, they voted him out of office.
