And nowhere did I say that large gatherings in close spaces is recommended.

I didn't mean to insinuate that you did. I disagreed with excusing the same behavior in one group and not in the other based on political motivations.

I understand. I have long held the position that wherever people go, they 1. wear masks 2 social distance and 3. wash their hands. My position has nothing to do with politics; rather it's entirely based on public health.

Except, a local, well known man, with no underlying conditions died from it. Healthy people in their 30's and 40's dying from it. The State had an article about the man that passed. You probably missed it since it wasn't on fox news.
That's called the exception. Thankfully, these cases aren't the norm.

So, younger people without underlying complications are much less likely to get it. I agree, and the statistics agree.
Get it? You mean infected? No.
They are less likely to have complications. But there are still plenty of very healthy younger people getting real sick and some going into ICU.

And there are also some elderly people who have been basically asymptomatic, because they are actually low risk.

Sorry never heard that. You got back up for that statement.
From his campaign speech yesterday:

“Now we have tested almost 40m people. By so doing, we show cases, 99% of which are totally harmless. Results that no other country can show because no other country has the testing that we have, not in terms of the numbers or in terms of quality.”

I suspect that the American families of the 132,510 people who have died from covid , would disagree with that statement. Trump continues to prove Rex Tillerson to be right.

They didn't report it on fox, eh? Its almost as if they shelter you from the moron. Sort of hiding his dumbass comments. That's part of the con...
There's a lot of dumb going around. Comments can be dissected and twisted and edited. I sure would not trust anything from CNN or the other hate Trumpers.

It's amazing to me how people will become angry at politicizing the virus, then argue tooth and nail that protests had nothing to do with spikes.

Is it so hard to admit that the same behavior of people at beaches and at protests caused the same thing?

The problem is both sides just want to point at the other. You can go to the beach and social distance. You can protest and social distance. The problem is we’ve seen plenty of images of both activities that likely led to Covid spread. This is a pandemic. It doesn’t care about left or right, liberal or conservative.

Yeah how crazy is that . So their solution was “Stay home and if you feel like you’re gonna die in the next hour or two come on down”. It’s just insane .
They've pretty much been saying this since the beginning. Sorry for your friend. Hopefully he doesn't have to be admitted.

I have been following this poor guy's story since he was admitted to the hospital back in March. He fought so hard for so long. Once we get control of this thing, I hope there is more research/studies about how and why the virus affects people so dramatically different. This guy had his leg amputated, was in a coma, had heart problems, etc. while other people have no symptoms at all. It's just bizarre.

To be fair, it's not just young people being irresponsible. I know someone who had a huge party on Lake Murray yesterday with no masks or distancing. This was a 40-50 age group.

Exactly , its everyone and no amount government rules, regulations and orders can fix it until we are ready to deal with it as citizens.

The government has rules on driving. There are stop signs, red lights, seat belts. etc. Do these people ignore those too? If they do, we are in more trouble than just with covid. In the meantime, the American death count due to covid is now 132,781 and counting.

Apparently seatbelts, smoking bans, etc. are okay but masks are where they draw the line.

I dont know, I'd say a lot of people ignore seatbelts, stop signs etc. There are a lot of selfish people out there

False. The American death count *attributed* to Covid is now 142,781. Meanwhile the CDC last week reports the virus as “less deadly than feared” and then reports that they have been mixing up test data, inadvertently combining positive results with antibody results. But I’m sure the president said something that the minions think they understand enough to chortle over anyway, so carry on.

WGAS about positive cases now. The positive cases are not what we need to be worrying about; but the problem is the media that’s ALL they post about—and ALOT of the American public eat it up. In SC, currently the death rate is now at 1.7% (on reported cases) and has been PLUMMETING. DHEC posts that they estimate that over 330,000 South Carolinians have already had the virus, which would put the death rate at 0.25%. Hospitalizations in SC are at 69% of beds occupied—down from 72% last Thursday. This virus, although VERY real, is not even in the ballpark when it comes to a global killer. Do you realize over 5,000,000 people have died worldwide so far this year because of hunger? HUNGER. THAT is a global pandemic. 4,200,000 people worldwide have died from cancer so far this year. THAT is a global pandemic. Over 2,500,000 people have died from smoking related illnesses so far this year. THAT is a global pandemic. The media, the WHO and ALL of the public officials should be ashamed of themselves for changing the way of life for the foreseeable future over what? A virus that has a mortality rate pretty much at the rate of the flu? A virus that has accounted for 1.7% of ALL the worldwide deaths so far this year. The hell with the other 98.3% of humans that have died this year—says the media. Obviously NONE of the morons in charge (at the National, State, or local level—as well as the school district level—YEAH!! Let’s send our kids to school for 2 days in person—the hell with education!) have a damn clue or never took a statistic course in college. They would actually see that this virus doesn’t warrant the bs hysteria. ALL for a virus with a mortality rate just like the flu. Oh well, this is what non stop, 24/7, social media and tv media has done to us.

There you go. Classic cult behavior. You ask for proof, you got it, then follow it up with "lots of dumb going around" (in other words, daddy everybody's doing it) Then, the always popular, blame or question the media fall back. Same playbook every day but I get that the options are somewhat limited when trying to defend & rationalize a pathological liar. Totally predictable & exactly what trump meant when he said he could shoot someone on main street & not lose his supporters. He absolutely said it about covid-19, it was not twisted or edited by anyone, and most importantly it was, predictably, another blatant lie. .In other words, just a routine day for trump and his followers who apparently live in some alternate universe where a lie is not a lie, you just yell fake news & blame the media.

But here you go, his comments about this start at about the 35 second mark. Just more fake news? CNN up to no good? Perhaps that's not really trump, just some guy who looks like trump.
The real question is why you would question that he would say something so incredibly dumb. Have you been living in a cave for the past 3.5 years?

Sometimes it is good to get different perspectives on things. It’s not just death rates and cases and deaths are instantaneous. You may not agree with everything on this article but it’s worth a read.

Whistling by the graveyard when most of the spreaders are untested and asymptomatic. Not good if you or your loved ones are senior citizens or at high risk. If it continues we won't need to bail out Social Security. What a morbid thought!

Media is obsessed with COVID cases, but death rate is what is important

https://nypost.com/2020/07/06/media...id-cases-but-death-rate-is-what-is-important/

The most dangerous flaw in the modern news media is their now constant vulnerability of becoming deeply invested in a particular narrative at the very start of a large story, and then having the ensuing tunnel vision prevent them from adjusting their reporting as new facts become available.

I am referring here to the news media’s obsession with using “new cases” as by far the most common, and often only, data point for evaluating how the nation is coping with the coronavirus crisis.

For more than two weeks, ever since June 19, when new cases in the United States went back over 30,000 in one day, we have been constantly bombarded with stories of how the virus is “spiking” in “record” numbers in many of the states (like California, Texas, Florida, and Arizona) that were not hit hard in the “first wave.”

Across the country, our number of new cases has indeed exploded to new levels during this time period (though, magically, the media tells us, very little, if any, of this “surge” can be blamed on Black Lives Matter protests/riots), and the news media, both at the national and local levels, have used these statistics to essentially create panic porn. The resulting public anxiety has caused several states to reverse their re-openings and cast a pall over major decisions currently being made all over the country, not just with regard to recreation options, but specifically with respect to the future of schools and major sporting events.

Obviously the “new case” data point is both real and relevant, but it is also now extremely misleading. By incompetently using the same measure of what a “positive” virus test meant in April, to what it now means in July, the news media is in the process of, quite effectively, sabotaging America’s recovery from this crisis.

The data, as well as basic logic, now makes it overwhelmingly obvious that nowhere near as many people who recently tested positive for the virus are going to die as did when this nightmare began. In fact, if the news media was inclined to do so (LMAO), there is potentially a positive story to tell with regard to our current numbers.

While the development has gotten scandalously little news coverage, the daily numbers of deaths with/of Covid has been declining with remarkable consistency for well over two months now.

On April 21, the 7-day rolling average for deaths with/of Covid was 2,225, according to the Worldomoters tracker. As of this writing, it is now down to 511, which, in a country of almost 330 million people, is statistically extremely small (for perspective, this time of year about 1,400 people die in nursing homes every single day).

Presumably, a big part of the reason the media has essentially disregarded what should be very welcome news is that there is a fear/expectation (for some partisans, even at least a hint of hope) that the declining trend on deaths will eventually reverse itself, especially with new cases rising so dramatically. This might be a valid cause for pumping the breaks on reporting positive news, except we now have very strong reasons to radically reevaluate what these “new case” numbers really mean.

Back in March and early April, because testing was far too limited, it meant that if you were getting tested that you at least had a good reason to think that you might have the virus. Consequently, the rate of positive tests was high, and those who were found to have the virus were almost universally “sick,” with a large percentage going to the hospital. A much smaller, but all too high, fraction eventually died.

However, since then several very key circumstances have changed for the better. Testing has now become extraordinarily widespread and almost commonplace, with the positive rate in most of the country shrinking rapidly, and a far greater of those positive tests coming from people who are not actually “sick” (as much of a liar as President Donald Trump is, just because he says something does NOT automatically transform a fact into a myth).

In rational world, for a portion of these people, getting tested as positive can actually be fantastic news. Not only do they now know to be extra careful in staying away from more vulnerable people (which people like them did not know months ago when testing was scarce), but they also presumably have at least some level of immunity going forward.

However, it is not just this important part of the story that the news media has conveniently ignored. Because those testing positive now are far younger, and because our treatments have naturally gotten better, there is a reasonable chance that the daily death rate will not significantly increase due to this spike.

There are those who will understandably say that this conclusion is premature and that in “two weeks” (which is inevitably when all the doomsday predictions are due to finally come true) that will change. While there may be a slight increase soon (one which the media will surely jump all over), the data gives us reason for legitimate optimism that, once again, the most dire predictions will not come close to fruition.

There is of course a significant lag from the time someone tests positive, and when they eventually pass away. But we are now 16 full days from when this surge in new cases began, and during the “first wave” there was no indication that it would take that long for an increase in cases to translate into a rise in deaths.

On April 4, we “spiked” to about 35,000 new cases in a day, and on April 7, hit a new high in daily deaths. On May 6, we reached our highest daily death count, a number which has been steadily diminishing ever since. Theoretically, we should be seeing an increase already.

But there is another reason to believe that a large reversal of the trend may not be coming. Sweden, a country much-maligned in the media because they dared to not lockdown by government mandate, has “new case” and “death” charts which look remarkably similar to ours, and their daily death rate has recently been down to single digits (shhhh… please don’t tell our news media!).

For the record, hospitalizations are an extremely key metric here (I have argued since the beginning that it is THE most important data point), and there is cause for concern on that front in a couple of key states. However, other than ICUs in Arizona and small sections of Texas, contrary to the perception being created in the media, the hospitalization situation is currently nowhere near a crisis, and there are no situations right now where those with the virus are not able to get needed hospital care.

This crisis is obviously real and it is not nearly over yet, but the news media making the situation appear far worse than it actually is might help keep Trump’s fading reelection chances down, but it is greatly harming the country. Not that such a reality matters to the news media anymore.

Wait, wait, wait. A couple of months ago everyone was saying that we all already had Covid-19 back in December and that the warm weather from summer would slow the virus down. It's funny how the agenda changes when it gets proven to be completely false.

That's because there is still a group of Americans who still believe that the whole thing is a hoax being perpetrated by the liberal media. They got their information from Fox when the US got its first positive test results. Fox has since then changed their stance but some people are still holding on to that original viewpoint. Those are the most dangerous people in the country when it comes to spreading this virus.

That’s like insisting the world is still flat because that’s what the experts said first. It’s fine to have issues where you have to change when something is still new and you’re trying to figure out what it happening. Prior to the end of January there was no record of human to human transition in the US. The problem is when you are at the end of March and everyone is watching cases grow here and what’s happening around the world and you are still labeling it a hoax. It’s also a pretty bad look when you went nuts over an outbreak that killed 11,000 people worldwide in 2 years while downplaying one that was closing in on that number within months of being identified.

The "media" making a specific statement about the "media". Don't drink the kool aid.

There are plenty of media sources that are not "obsessed" with CV fatalities.
