The guy Ray said no to just won his 5th conference championship at 4 different schools as #24 13-0 Liberty is finishing off NM State (who blew out Auburn 2 weeks ago) to win Conference USA.

Chadwell conf championships
D2 North Greenville x 1 2010
FCS Charlleston Southern x 2 2015/2016
FBS Coastal Carolina x 1 2020
FBS Liberaty x 1 2023

**He also was OC at CSU in 2005 when they won a 3rd one

And yes, Hugh Freeze coacbed LU last year. And left, and Chadwell had to convince LU players not to portal out. Appears he did quite well. While we lose players like a sinking ship.

And he just turned down Mississippi State to stay at Liberty.

Ray Tanner should resign over this one. We had an up and coming star and he said no, to hire a 20 year position coach.

Liberty also leads the entire nation in rushing. This offense has torched opponents and has succeeded everywhere hes been. Partly due to his loyal assistants who have also gone w him every stop. OC Willy Korn played for him at NGU and has coacbed w him every stop.

Theres NOTHING that indicates he would not have succeeded in the same pattern here

Going to be one of our biggest regrets.

Sucks the fans have to pay the price for the mistake.

He has a better team with Liberty resources than Beam'n'coke does with SEC resources. Tittle 9 Tanner can Kindly gtfo, should have been fired years ago or even better never hired.

Yep. And SO MANY of us were pushing for Chadwell. It wasnt anti-Beamer, and I still don’t dislike Beamer, it was just obvious Chadwell as a once a generation opportunity: perfect scheme coach, perfect “do more with less” guy, 20 yrs of state ties recruiting, a guy who wants to stay in the Southeast coast part of the country, and a clear winning resume’ at several stops and levels, it was the alignment of the planets.

And Ray chose otherwise.

CBS talking about Liberty being in a NY6 Bowl if 1-loss Tulane isnt

We’ve never been in one. Ever.

Any conjecture will come to an end if Chadwell gets picked up by an SEC team and competes in the big league where resources are maximized, competition is cut-throat, and NIL funding is evergreen.

If he does anything close to what he is doing is sub-P5 conferences, that's the time to start a regrets thread.

No. It’s time to cut the losses with Beamer and do whatever we need to get Chadwell.

lol they beat everyone in their schedule. They went 8-5 last year and you’re trying to discredit their coach?
I agree thats what hes doing, but I dont mind saying it, its NM State in the CUSA Championship game. A 10’win team who blew out Auburn

Liberty also has beaten 6 bowl teams with an average margin of victory 17 points

He beat Libertys opponents, with Liberty players, about the same way WE would have w SEC players.

He just turned down Mississippi State. He knows he can do better, and as I said, wants to stay in the Carolians/VA/TN area where he was born and raised

You’re right but its too late. Mississippi State just offered him and he declined. He would tell us no too bc Ray shunned him.

My point is Ray must resign. He CANNOT ever make another football decision.

I would let Chadwell personally fire Tanner and Chance.

We're on par with a Mississippi State in the SEC.

He wants pick a school in a conference where talent flows more often to help ensure success.

That's what he did with Liberty and Conference USA.

"Expert coach" Will Muschamp is great with a stable of 5-stars.

I disagree, Chadwell has gone to 4 schools who were near the bottom of their conferences in recruitment, and won. His reputation is taking over average programs, or ones in FCS/FBS transition, and vastly overachieving

He wants to stay in the SC/NC/VA/TN region, where he was born and always lived. Im friends w a guy who coached with him. He woulda stayed at USC a long time. Probably will end up at VaTech, or Tennessee if that job ever opens again.

But Ray dropped the ball when we had our chance

It could be. He still has to prove that in the big leagues.

Why wallow in hypotheticals though?

The chances of him coming to USC are next to none at this point.

Because Ray should be fired over it

Ok going to play devils advocate here. Chadwell did a solid job at Coastal. No denying that.

However he inherited a Rolls Royce at Liberty. Hugh Freeze brought in most of those players. Liberty has a TON of money and resources, much more than most of their opponents in their conference. It’s nice Liberty is undefeated, but I’m not sure if they were an underdog in any of those games, so let’s not act like he built Liberty from the ground up.

Chadwell might do great in a power 5 job and he might be “Sun Belt Billy” Napier. It’s hard to knock us when virtually no other major college has given him a chance (except Miss State which he turned down.)

Not a bad point but look at 247 recruiting rankings. Hugh Freeze wasnt bringing in 5 stars, LU was ranked near the bottom few of FBS every year. Freeze was/is an elite coach. And Chadwell isnt from the Freeze tree, so he inherited a roster of average CUSA talent and installed all new offensive and defensive systems .

So your end game is trying to get Ray fired as a result of Chadwell's success in Conference USA?

The hypothetical opportunity cost hiring Beamer over Chadwell is the tipping point for Ray?

Speaking of hypotheticals, I posted one one the other day on what would have happened if Spurrier was coaching us today and Lattimore and Clowney were coming through again. How would we possible obtain and/or retain them for any length of time?

This is the main issue with the NIL at the top of D1. ALL of the good players are going to follow the money now. If we move up in the recruiting ranks, it will mostly be because we raised more money than the teams behind us. It's not going to be because Spurrier danced with Lattimore's Mom anymore. That ship has sailed.

The NIL is advancing to the point where players who would normally have careers in the NFL will maximize their profits in College Football and never play a down in the NFL because they won't need to.

“I would have probably tried to do it like all these guys are doing it now,” Spurrier said. “You find some wealthy, wealthy guys that sort of have more money than they know what to do with and then you can try to match what the other schools are offering them.”

Due to the obvious hire he was too prideful or whatever to make yes. We would’ve been an 8/9 win program for the next decade

Some coaches are winning in this environment. FCS and G5 teams constantly get raided.

Hire the proven winners

Liberty was 8-5 last year and the year before.

We might be overestimating their status before he got there.
Yep they’re in denial that Ray made a colossal mistake that will haunt us for decades.

Liberty was an above average FCS team, and has never once gone 12-0. Their FBS recruiting has been in the 100-120 rank range most years.

And they’re 13-0 CUSA champs and probably ranked #20 or higher next week

Coaches might have one-offs if their schedule is favorable. We had one last year.

I'm talking about sustained overachieving for a series of years at the top of the D1 food chain.

So Saban, Kirby, Harbaugh and Urban Meyer.

Thats an extremely limited pool and they aren’t even considering South Carolina

Saban, Kirby, Harbaugh and Meyer did their magic in a completely different environment at completely different schools. They pulled a "Chadwell at Liberty" which capitulated them into the elite college football fraternity and that was during a period when pay-to-play didn't exist.

Once they entered the fraternity, they made certain pick to D1 school where 5-stars were easily accessible. The last thing you want to do is be a hot coach who everyone wants and pick a school where recruiting is limited. This is probably Chadwell's aim today.

You're not going to outcoach layers of talent on any consistent basis. Spurrier's jab at Saban was -- "Come do it at South Carolina." And that was pre-NIL.

Yet Chadwell has. Anyone who follows D2 and FCS will say North Greenville and Charleston Southern were average at best among their peers, and had fewer resources. Yet CSU was beating App State, Coastal, Liberty, North Dakota St, and other FAR better equipped FCS programs. And won multiple conference titles

He took Coastal in FCS/FBS transition and beat BYU, Kansas and other better resourced FBS programs. Won Sun Belt

Now, he takes Liberty, with bottom ranked recruit classes in FBS, and they were 8-5 in 2022 and had a 4 game losing streak to end the year….and is now 13-0 and maybe in a NY6 bowl.

Thats consistent. You say SEC is a level up, yes obviously. And hes done it each time he leveled up.

Its his schemes and culture that win.

They were 8-1 before the Hugh Freeze to Auburn rumors started heating up. You’re conveniently leaving that part out. No doubt rumors of your coach leaving affect the locker room and play. They’re winning 8-11 games every year since 2019.

We’re also forgetting they went 10-1 with only one loss in 2020. A one point loss to NC State. So Liberty was one possession away from having 2 undefeated seasons in the last four years. That’s a pretty solid machine.

Oh by the way, the bowl win that season was against Chadwell and Coastal.

It just doesn't work at the top of D1. Resources are maximized because there's too much money at stake. Again, please name a coach in the SEC who consistently outperforms teams with more talent. You can't and there's a reason for that.
